The invention relates to calculating machines and more particularly to improvements in register control means.
An object of the invention is to provide simpli- 5 fled mechanism for controlling the character of operations to be performed upon the registering mechanism of a listing calculator,such as the well known Gardner machine; reference being made to Patents Nos. 1,927,878, issued September 26, 1933 to Harold P. Mixer, and 1,867,0021issued.

Another object of the invention is the novel arrangement whereby the register control lever is placed in juxtaposition to the machine operating handle. The position of the two levers being such that the operator sets the register control lever during the same movement required of the hand in reaching for and operating the operating handle.
The invention consists in the novel construc tion and combination of parts, as set forth in the appended claims.

.In the machine illustrated, amounts set up on the digit keyboard H5 (Fig. 2) are accumulated in the register "3, by engagement thereof with reclprocatory actuating segments lilo. The segments are reciprocated by movement of a rock shaft" 3!, operated by a suitable hand lever I (Fig. 1), said shaft being provided with cam means 3 l 8 for governing the movement of a spring tensioned rocker frame GIG, mounted on shaft 608, frame SIB carrying a series of dogs 6H normally engaged by studs 65!! of the levers 6H).
As shaft 3M is rotated forwardly (counterclockwise, Fig. 2) frame Eli will be rocked, and any of the levers 6H1 which have been released by the depression of digit keys 2l5 will be allowed to rotate, under influence of their springs 683, until they are stopped by contact of the related stop bars 6 I 5, carried by the levers Blll, with the stems 5 of the keys. Upon reverse rotation of shaft 3M, the dogs SIT will return the operated levers 6H! to normal position. This excursion of the levers 6 l 0 serves to register amounts set in the keyboard upon the register "3, either subtractively, by en- 10 gagement of said register during the forward stroke, or additively, by engagement thereof during the return stroke of levers SID.
The accumulator shaft 403 is slidably mounted in slots of frame plates MD, as seen in Fig. 1, and 15 when said accumulator is set to active position, the gears fllthereof will be brought into mesh with the racks of levers SID, against the tension of suitable springs, not shown, by a rocking cam plate 9, secured to shaft 2. 20
Addition Mounted upon shaft 2, is an arm 5, attached to the plate 9, through yieldable U-spring connection 4, the two arms of the spring being con- 30 fined between lugs of plate 9 and also between lugs of arm 5, and a fixed abutment lying between the arms of the spring. Pivotally mounted at 33, upon the rearward end of arm 5 is a switch cam 6, (Figs. 1, 3, 4, and 5). Switch 8 cooperates with a roller 1 secured to an arm 8, fast to reciprocating shaft30l, and is adapted to be set to one of three positions relative to said roller by means of setting lever 3 in the following manner:
A projection 9 of switch 6 extends between two spring pressed arms I!) and II, said arms being loosely mounted in a suitable groove cut in the hub of full stroke arm 8. Arms Ill and II have projections, I2 and I3, respectively, engaging the lower end of a rock lever ll, pivotally mounted upon shaft l5. Rock lever I4 is normally held against a stop pin 69 by a spring 88 and has projections 3|,and 38, located between projections 30 and 31 of a link It, pivotally connected at IT to the lower end of setting lever 3, said link being slidably supported at its forward end upon the shaft l5, as shown.

During the first portion of the forward movement of operating handle I, roller 1 will engage cam surface 2| of switch 8 (forming in effect an upper extension of the rear surface of flange 22), passing under the switch, raising arm 5 about point 2, and rocking cam plate 4I8 counterclockwise, to the position illustrated in Fig 3. The above described movement of plate 4I9 brings a low point of its cam edge opposite a collar of shaft 483 and thus releases register 413, allowing said register to be disengaged from the actuator racks 610 before said racks are allowed to move. Thus racks BID will move idly during the forward stroke of lever I, the arm 5 being held in raised position until the end of the forward stroke of said lever by means of roller 1 engaging the under surface of a guide flange 22, of said arm. At the end of the forward stroke roller 1 will have passed from beneath flange 22 and will lie adjacent cam surface 23 of switch 6. During the return movement roller 1, acting upon surface 23, will restore arm 5, rocking plate 4I9 counterclockwise to reengage registers 413 with the racks 8H1. The return movement of said racks will now impart counterclockwise or additive movement to the registers 413. I
Subtraction To set the control means. for subtraction, the operator, in reaching for the operating handle I, slides the base of the thumb across a suitable knob 24 of the setting lever 3 (see Fig. 1) rocking said lever clockwise about point 25, and then, by flexing the fingers slightly, lever I, and thus full stroke arm 8, is moved forward sufliciently to bring a' locking flange 26 of said arm above the surface 21 of a forward arm of latch I9, thus, by engagement of stud 28 of said latch with notch 29, of setting lever 3, locking said lever in subtractive position during the operative movement of handle I.
Clockwise movement of lever 3 has moved link I6 forwardly, the projection 30 of said link engaging pin 3| of rocker l4 and imparting-a clockwise movement to said rocken Clockwise movement of rocker I4 will rock arm I0 and (through spring 32) the arm II, counterclockwise about point 3M. The described movement of arm II will cause said arm, by engagement with projection 3, to rock switch 6 clockwise about its pivot point 33, to the position illustrated in Fig. 4,,
wherein the surface 2| of said switch is rocked out of the path of movement of roller 1. Roller 1 thus moving idly past the switch and over guide plate 22 on the forward stroke, register 413 will remain in engagement with the racks GIII to impart clockwise or subtractive movement to the registers 413.
At the end of the forward stroke roller 1, having momentarily displaced the switch and passed beyond the same, will be positioned adjacent the surface 34 of switch 6 and, during return movement, will engage said surface, raising the arm 5 and rocking cam plate 413 to disengage register 413 from the rack 6H) during the return move-, ment of said racks to their normal position. The roller I in passing beneath the flange 22 locks arm aoeacee 5 and plate 9 in raised position. Near the end of the return movement of the parts, roller 1 engages a projection 35 of arm 5 to restore said arm and plate M9 to normal position. At the end of the return movement of arm 8, plate 26 releases 1 latch' I9, whereupon springs I8 and 18 will restore control lever 3 to its normal central position, spring I8 being of suflicient power to move the stud 26 out of notch 29.
Non-(um In non-addoperations wherein listing is to be efiected without accumulaton on the register, control lever 3 will be rocked counterclockwise by the operator and locked in said position by engagement of stud 28 with notch 36 in the manner described for subtractive operations. terclockwise movement of lever 3, however, will cause link I6 to move rearwardly, and the projection 31 of said link will contact the projection 38 of rocker I4, imparting a partial movement clockwise to said rocker, bringing the parts to the position illustrated in Fig. 5, wherein the switch 6 will be moved and held, by arms III and II, out of cooperative relation with roller 1. Roller 1 will thus move idly during a forward and return movement of the parts, the plate 4I8, remaining in normal position. The register 413 will thus be held in engagement with racks 5Ill during both the forward and return movements of said racks, whereupon any values, set up on digit'keys 2I5, will be rotated into said registers during the forward stroke, but will be rotated out during return movement of the parts.
Yieldable stops 39 (Fig. 1) are provided to limit the movement of the operating handle and associated parts, these stops being adapted to absorb impact and minimize noise.
Totals Since, as described in the aforementioned patents, the taking of a total involves a subtractive setting of themachine, projection 54 of the total key 218 (Fig. 1) by engagement with pin 55 of rocker I4 is adapted to. give said rocker its full clockwise movement, to set the parts for a subtractive operation, in the manner previously described. In taking a sub-total, values stored upon registers 413 are to be retained, wherefore said registers are left in engagement with the actuating segments 6H] during the forward and return strokes thereof. Upon operation, the sub-total key 213, therefore, is adapted'by engagement of its projection 56' with projection 51 of pawl I4, to give said pawl a partial step of clockwise movement and thereby set the control mechanism in the position described with relation to the nonadd operation.
Power operation p be rocked out of engagement with the projection I52 of a clutch pawl I53, pivotally mounted upon the crank arm I55, allowing said pawl, under in- I Counfluenceof its spring I50, to be rocked into engagement with notched disc I51.
During the above described movement of lever I50, an insulated roller 53, fast thereto, will eflect contact of the points 54 of motor switch 35, to start the motor and rotate notched disc I51.
During an operating cycle of the machine crank arm I55, having link connection II with an arm 3I5, fast to shaft "I, will impart reciprocating movement to said shaft, to provide for register operation in the manner previously described.
Toward the end of the cycle of operation an arm I55 of crank I55 will contact with a tooth I53 of the lever I50 and will force said lever back into latching position, breaking the electric circult and bringing the end of lever I50 into the path of movement of projection I52 of pawl I53 to disengage said pawl from driving disc I51 and check further rotation of the parts.
A control lever 50, similar to the lever 3, is arranged in juxtaposition to key I30, in such manner as to be movable by the thumb of the operator as key I30 is depressed by the base of the thumb.
Lever 50 controls the character of operation to be performed upon register 403 in the same manner as described for the lever 3.
The following means will prevent a machine cycle if lever 58 should be but partially operated when key I30 is depressed:
Stud 50, secured to lever I50 and upon which the insulated roller 63 is mounted, extends through a suitable aperture provided in a lever 60.
Lever 50' is fulcrumed at 5| and is provided at its upward end with a projection 02.
Release of lever I50, upon depression of key I30 as previously described, will cause said lever through stud 50 to rock lever 00 counterclockwise, bringing projection 52 into engagement with the notch 'II of lever 50 and thereby preventing operation of said lever during an operating cycle ofthe machine.
If however lever 50 is operated simultaneously with key I33, notch II will have been rocked out of the path of movement of projection 02 and said projection will contact the surface 06, to prevent further movement of lever I50 until lever 50 has been fully operated thereby releasing projection 02 from surface 05.
Suitable projections 01 of surface 55 will prevent lever 50, if partially operated, from return-' ing to normal under influence of spring II, insuring that said lever must be correctly positioned before the machine can operate.
I claim:
1. In a calculating machine having means selectively settable to control plus or minus registration, and motor drive means therefor including a normally restrained drive initiating member and a 'key manipulable to release said member; a manually adjustable setting lever for said flrst named means, and interlock means between the motor drive and the setting lever, including means operable upon incomplete adjustment of the setting lever to hold the released drive initiating member inactive.
2.- In a calculating machine having a register and reciprocable register actuators; means selectively settable to control actuation of said register by said actuators upon movement thereof in a given direction, including a member reciprocable with said actuators and provided with a roller, a lever adjustable to control the registration and provided with a guide flange cooperating with said roller, and an adjustable switch pivotally mounted upon said lever and cooperating with the roller to rock the lever and shift the flange across the path of movement of said roller.
3. In a calculating machine having a register and reciprocable register actuators; means selectively settable to control actuation of said register by said actuators upon movement thereof in a given direction, including a member reciprocable with said actuators and provided with a roller, a lever adjustable to control the registration and provided with a guide flange cooperating with said roller, an adjustable switch pivotally mounted upon said lever and cooperating with the roller to rock the lever and shift the flange across the path of movement of said roller and a pair of opposed spring arms adapted to locate the switch in an intermediate adjusted position.
4. In a calculating machine having a register and reciprocable register actuators; means selectively settable to control actuation of said register by said actuators upon movement thereof in a given direction," including a member reciprocable with said actuators and provided with a roller, a lever adjustable to control the registration and provided with a guide flange cooperating with said roller, an adjustable switch pivotally mounted upon said lever and cooperating with the roller to rock the lever and shift the flange across the path of movement of said roller, 9. pair of opposed spring arms adapted to locate the switch'in an intermediate adjusted position,
