2l adapted to be engaged by a pair of corresponding guides 22, 22 extending from a cutter head 23 for adjustably supporting said cutter head for vmoven'ient towards rand vaway from said cutter frame. Said cutter head is adjustably moved towards and awayfrom said cutter frame by means of a screw 24 'in a well-known manner.
Said screw is transversely pivoted between projections `25, 25 extending fromthe forwardend of said frame on a pin 26. .Said screw in turn is threaded within an internally threaded sleeve `21 which sleeve Vis threaded within a hub 28 of a'worm gear' 2'9. Said worm gear is journaled within the forward portion of said cutter frame in a suitable manner vand is 4driven from the motor I'I by a suitable gear train which will hereinafter be more fully described.
The cutterhead 23 forms a pivotal support 55 for a cutter bar supporting member 3U in a usual manner and said cutter bar supporting member forms a support for the cutter bar I4 which projects therefrom. Said cutter bar has a cutter chain 3| orbitally movable thereabout, which is driven from a cutter chain sprocket 33 secured to an internally splined sleeve 34. Said sleeve in turn is suitably journaled within the cutter bar supporting member 30 (see Figure 5).
The sprocket 33 is rotated for driving the cutter chain 3| about the cutter bar I4 by means of a splined shaft 35 slidably engaging the internally splined sleeve 34. Said shaft also slidably engages the splined hub of a bevel gear 36 journaled within the cutter frame `20. Said bevel gear is driven by a bevel pinion 31 keyed on the forward end of a drive shaft 39 coaxial with the axis of rotation of said cutter frame. SaidY drive shaft extends longitudinally of the elevator I9 and is driven from the forward end of the motor I7 by means ofY a suitable system of reduction gears, not herein shown in detail, but clearly shown and described in the aforementioned prior application of William W. Sloane.
With reference now in particular to Figure 4 and the drive connections from the shaft 39 to the operating parts of the cutting element I3, a pair of oppositely disposed bevel gears 40, 40 are driven fro-m the shaft 39 through a gear train, generally indicated by reference character 4I. Said bevel gears are selectively connectible with a transversely extending shaft 43 for driving said shaft in reverse directions without reversal of the motor I'I. Said transverse shaft is operatively connected adjacent its ends through self-locking gearing (not shown) to a pair of parallel-spaced shafts 44, 44 for vertically moving the cutting element in the guides I6, I6 in al manner set forth in the aforementioned prior application of Wiliiam W. Sloane.
Spur gears 45, 45 are oppositely rotated by the bevel gears 40, 40 and mesh with spur gears 46, 46 freely mounted on a transverse shaft 41. Said last-named spur gears are selectively connectible with said shaft for rotating said shaftl in opposite directions without reversal of the motor I'I by means of suitable friction clutches 48, 48 of a usual construction. A worm 49 is keyed on said shaft and meshes with and drives a worm gear 50 keyed on a sleeve 5| coaxial with the longitudinal shaft 39 and freely rotatable with respect thereto.
The sleeve 5| forms a drive member for a gear train for rotating the cutter frame 20 about a longitudinal axis and for other gear trains for moving the cutter head 23 and cutter bar I4 towards or from said cutter frame or swinging said cutter bar about an axis perpendicular to said longitudinal axis at a feeding speed in the following manner:
A spur pinion 53 is freely mounted on the forward end of said sleeve and formsa sun gear of a planetary gear train. Said spur gear meshes with spur gears 54, 54 disposed on opposite sides of its center. Said spur gears are journaled on shafts 5,5, 55 supported in a cage 56. Said cage is operatively connected with the cutter frame 20 for rotating said cutter frame in a manner which is clearly described in the aforementioned application of William W. Sloane. Said spur gears mesh with an internal gear 5l keyed on the inside of a bearing portion 59 formed integral with and extending forwardly of the elevator frame I9. Said bearing portion 59 forms a bearing support for the cutter frame 2D which is held in engagement therewith by an annular ring 60 which is secured to said cutter frame and engages a shouldered rearward portion of said bearing member (see Figures 4, 5, and '7).
The spur pinion 53 has integrally formed clutch jaws 6 I 6I extending rearwardly therefrom which are adapted to be engaged by forwardly projecting clutch jaws 62, 62 extending forwardly from and formed integral with feather keys 63, 63 feathered on the sleeve 5I. Said feather keys are secured adjacent their rearward ends to a clutch collar 64 and are moved along the sleeve 5I to engage the clutch jaws 62, 62 with or disengage said clutch jaws from the clutch jaws 6| for selectively driving the spur pinion 53 from the sleeve 5I by means of a system of levers operatively connected with said clutch collar in a manner which will hereinafter be more fully described. It will thus be apparent that the cutter frame 20 may be rotated by the motor I'I about an axis extending longitudinally of the machine inreverse directions without reversal of said motor.
Suitable means are provided-for holding said cutter frame in fixed-relationship with respect to said elevator frame when adjusted for cutting shearing or horizontal kerfs. Said means, as herein shown, comprises a plurality of toothed sections or racks 65, 65 secured to the rearward face of the retaining ring 6U at spaced intervals therealong. Said toothed sections are adapted to be engaged with a toothed member 66 carried in a slot formed in a lug 61 extending upwardly from the elevator frame I9. Said member is engaged with or disengaged from said toothed segments by means of a hand lever 69 which actuates an eccentric 'I0 operatively connected with said toothed member by means of a link II.
The cutter bar I4 is swung about an axis perpendicular to said longitudinal axis or moved towards and from the cutter frame 20 by means of a spur gear 'I3 keyed on the sleeve 5I adjacent but rearwardly of the spur pinion 53. Said spur gear is provided with a plurality of slots extending therethrough, along the sleeve 5I, to slidably receive the feather keys 63, 63 which carry the clutch jaws 62, 62Yon the forward end thereof. Said spur gear meshes with and drives a spur pinion 'I4 feathered on a longitudinally extending shaft l5. Said `shaft is journaled adjacent its ends in the cutter frame 20 for lslidable movement with respect thereto in a suitable manner and said spur gear is held from longitudinal movement with respect to said shaft by means of a cage 16, a portion of which cage also forms a bearing support for said shaft (see Figures 4 and 5).
A worm II is journaled for coaxial rotation with respect to the shaft I5 adjacent the forward end thereof. Said worm meshes with and drives a worm gear 'I9 keyed on a vertically disposed sleeve 8D which sleeve is journaled within the cutter frame 2D in a suitable manner. The lower end of the sleeve is splined and is adapted to receive a splined shaft 8| which slidably engages the splined hub of a worm 83 journaled on its hub in the cutter head 23 adjacent the forward endl thereof. Said worm meshes with and drives a worm gear 84 keyed on a transverse shaft 85. A self-lockingwornr 86 is keyed on said transverse shaft and meshes with a self-locking worm gear segment 8'I secured to the cutter bar support member 30 for swinging the cutter bar I4 at a feeding speed (see Figure 3).
The worm 11 is provided with rearwardly projecting clutch jaws 88, 88 adapted to be engaged by clutch jaws 89, 89 on a. clutch member 90 keyed to the shaft 15. Said clutch member is ber H30.
provided with oppositely disposed clutch l:laws 9|, 9| adapted-to engage forwardly projecting clutch jaws 93, '93 formed integral with a worm 94. Said worm is journaled in the Vcutter frame 20 coaxial with the shaft 15 and meshes with the worm gear 29. l
Thus, by longitudinal lmovement of the shaft 15 in one direction or another, either the Worm 'I1 or the' worm 94 may be driven thereby for reversely swinging the cutter bar I4 at a lfeeding `speed or adjusting said cutter bar towards or from thecutter head 23 without reversal of the motor I1, reversal of said shaft being controlled bythe hereinbefore mentioned gears 46, 46 and clutches 40, 48 (See Figure 4:).
Referring now to several other novel features of my invention which include the clutch shifting means for shifting the shaft 15 'for driving either of the worm gears 11 or 94 'therefrom through the clutch member 00, and the means for shifting the feathered keys 63 and interlocking said shifting mechanisms so the cutter bar cannot be swung about an axis perpendicular to its plane of swinging at the same time it is being rotated about an axis extending longitudinally of the machine, a clutch yoke 95 engages the rearward end of the shaft 15. Said clutch yoke is engaged -by a clutch fork 96 pivoted intermediate its ends between rearward projections '91, 91 of the cage 16. The opposite end of said clutch fork is bifurcated vand engages Voppositely disposed pins 99, 99 extending from a shifting mem- Said shifting member slidably engages the hub of the spur -gear`13 adjacent one of its ends and is mounted on a clutch collar I| adjacent its opposite end. Said shifting member is freely rotatable with respect to fsaid clutch collar which is mounted on the sleeve Said clutch collar is engaged bya clutch fork |03 mounted -on a rock shaft |04 pivoted in the bottom of the elevator frame I9 (see Figure 5).

The means for shifting Vthe clutch collar 64 includes a clutch fork |I0 engageable with the clutch collar 64 and pivoted on a rock shaft carried in the bottom of the elevator vframe I9. Means are provided for interlocking the rock shafts Hi8 and H4 to prevent engagement of one clutch mechanism when the other clutch mechansm is engaged. Said means includes a'flanged sector IIB secured to the rock shaft |08 andanother flanged sector II 1 secured to the rock shaft II`4. Said 'flanged sectors are so 'arranged that the Vianges thereof face eachother. The flange offthe flanged l'sector -IiliiV is provided "with an opening IIB intermediate the ends' thereof which is adapted `to permit the? flange of the flanged 'sector I |1 to pass therethrough upon operation of thel rock shaft `rI |l|.l When positioned, as shown in 'Figurer 5, either of the clutch mechanisms may Abe shifted;V When the rock shaft H4' is pivoted, the flange ofthe' sector |I1` will pass through the opening U0 and lock the rock shaft |00 from movement. In a like manner, when therock `shaft |08 is rocked 'from 'the initial position shown in 'l'igure 5, the flange of the flanged sector II1 will engage the flange of 'the hanged sector IIB upon movement of fthe rock shaft I| 4 for lock- -ingsaid rock shaft from movement.
' It will thus be seen that a novel and improved system of clutch shifting mechanisms has been provided, wherein a plurality of clutches remote from each other may be-shifted from adjacent 'positions and that -anovel 'and simplified interlocking means has 'been provided for preventing rotation of the cutter head 23 about a longitudinal axis while the cutterbar `'Ill isv being adjusted towards or from said axis of rotation or while said cutter bar is being -swung about an axis perpen- `dicular`thereto and vice fversa.
While -I have herein shown and described `one 'form of my invention, I do not wish to be limited -to the precise details of construction or arrangement of parts herein shown and described, excepting as'sp'eciically limited in the appended claims.
'I claim as my invention:
l. In an 'apparatus of the class described, a frame member, another frame member rotatably supported by `said first-.mentionedframe member, abutting element supported for pivotal .movement with respect to said second-mentionedlframe vmember about `an axis perpendicular to the axis of rotation lof said second-mentioned frame, power operated vmeans for rotatably vmoving said secondrnention-ed frame member including a rotatable driving fmembe'r, a clutch for 'controlling operation of said drivingv member and a rock shaft for operating said clutch, a rotatable driving member mounted in said second-mentioned frame, a drive connection lbetween said first and second mentioned rotatable driving members, a driveV connection from said second-mentioned vrotatable driving member for swinging said cutting element and afclutch controlling-'selective operation of said drive connection, Vsaid last-mentioned clutch inoludin'g la shifting member coaxial with said firstmentioned driving member and a rock shaft for operating said shifting member, and an interlocking connection between both of said clutches including interengaging means on said rock shafts.

4. In an apparatus of the class describeda frame member, another frame member supported bythe rst frame member for rotatable movement with respect thereto, a cutting element supported by said second frame member for pivotal movement with respect thereto about an axis perpendicular toV the axis of rotationlof said second frame, power operated means for rotatably moving said second frame member including Va rotatable driving member, a gear coaxial therewith, a clutchV selectively connecting said gear with said rotatable driving member and a rock shaft for operating said clutch, a rotatable driv- ,ing member journaled in said second frame, a
driving connection between said first and second mentioned rotatable driving members, a gear Ycoaxial with said second mentioned rotatable driving member, a drive connection from said gear for swinging said cutting element, a clutch for connecting said gear with said rotatable driving member, operating means for said last named clutch including means for translationally moving said second named driving member with respect to said gear, said last named clutch means including a shifting member coaxial with said first named driving member and a rock shaft for operating said shifting member, and an interlocking connection between said clutches comprising a sector on one of said rock shafts and another sector on the other rock shaft, said sectors being so arranged that one may engage the other upon operation of one rock Ashaft and the attempted operation of the other rock shaft.
5. An apparatus in accordance with claim 4, wherein one sector has an opening therein to receive and permit movement of said other sector and lock the sector having the opening therein from movement.
`6. In a mining machine, a frame member, an-
other frame member supported b-y said first .frame member for rotatable movement with respect thereto, a projecting cutter bar supported by said second frame member for pivotal movement with respect thereto about an axis disposed perpendicularly to said rst mentioned axisand for movement towards and from said axis, power operated means for rotatably moving said second frame about said axis including a rotatable driving member, a gear coaxial therewith, a clutch selectively connecting said gear withsaid rotatable driving member and a rock shaft for operating said clutch, a rotatable driving member journaled in said second frame, a geared connection between said first and second -mentioned rotatable driving members, a gear coaxial with said. second mentioned rotatable driving member, a drive connection from said gear for moving said cutter bar towards or from said axis of rotation of said second frame, a clutch for operatively connecting said gearwith said shaft, operating means for said last named clutch including position.
7. A mining machine in accordance with claim 6, wherein a rock shaft is provided for translationally moving said second named driving member and shifting said second named clutch, wherein said rock shaft is parallel with and adjacent said rst named rock shaft and wherein the interlocking connection between said rock shafts comprises a sector on one of said rock shafts and a sector on said otherv rock shaft, said sectors being so arranged that one may engage the other vupon operation of one rock shaft and the attempted operation of the other rock shaft.
8. In 'a track-mounted mining machine, a truck having a turntable thereon, cutting mechanism mounted on said turntable including a forwardly projecting'frame member having a projecting chain-carrying cutter bar carried thereby forv movement towards and away therefrom and for swinging movement about an axis perpendicular tothe longitudinal axis thereof, power operated means for driving said cutter chain .about said cutter bar and independently moving said cutter bar towards and away from said cutter frame or swinging said cutterbar about its axis of pivotal connection to said frame comprising a shaft extending longitudinally of said frame, a sleeve coaxial with said shaft and reversely driven therefrom without reversal of said shaft, a parallel shaft driven by said sleeve, a worm on said shaft,a drive connection from said worm to said cutter bar for moving said cutter bar towards and away from said cutter head, another worm'on said parallel shaft, a drive connection from said worm to said cutter bar for swinging said cutter bar at a feeding speed, and means for operatively connecting said shaft with either of said worms comprising a clutch member on said shaft intermediate said worms and. means for shifting said shaft for engaging said clutch member with either of said worms.
9. In a track-mounted mining machine adapted to cut vertical orv horizontal kerfs in a mine wall, a truck, cutting mechanism mounted on and projecting forwardly of said truck including a. frame member mounted thereon, a cutter frame carried by said frame member for rotational movement with respect thereto about a Ilongitudinal axis, a cutter head movable towards and away from said cutter frame, Va cutter bar connected with said cutter head. for pivotal `movement with respect thereto about an axis perpendicular tosaid longitudinal axis, a sleeve coaxial with the axis of pivo-tal movement of said cutter frame, means 'selectively connectible Ywith said sleeve for rotating said cutter frame,

mine wall, a truck, cutting mechanism mounted on and projecting forwardly of said truck including a frame member mounted thereon, a cutter frame .carried by said frame member for rotational movement with respect thereto about a longitudinal axis, a cutter head movable towards and away from said cutter frame, a cutter bar connected with said cutter head for pivotal movement with respect theretoabout an axis perpendicular to said longitudinal axis, a sleeve coaxial with the axis of pivotal movement of said cutter frame, means selectively connectible with said sleeve for rotating said cutter frame, a. shaft carried by said cutter frame and arranged parallel to said sleeve, a drive connection from said sleeve to said shaft, means coaxial with and selectively connectible with said shaft for moving said cutter bar towards and from said cutter frame, other means coaxial with and selectively connectible with said shaft for swinging said cutter frame with respect to said cutter bar at a feeding speed, and means for selectively connecting said adjusting or swinging means with said shaft comprising a. clutch member secured to said shaft and engageable with either said adjust ing or swinging means upon translational movement of said shaft in one direction or another.
11, A mining machine in accordance with claim 9, wherein the means for adjusting said cutter bar towards and from said cutter frame includes a worm coaxial with said shaft and adapted to be selectively connectible therewith and wherein the means for swinging said cutter bar at a feeding speed includes another worm coaxial with said shaft and adapted to be selectively connectible therewith. A mining machine in accordance with claim 9, wherein the means for adjusting said cutter bar towards and from said cutter fran-le includes a worm coaxial With said shaft and adapted to be selectively connectible therewith, wherein the means forswinging said cutter bar at a feeding speed includes another worm coaxial with said shaft and adapted to be selectively connectible therewith, wherein said worms are Vjournaled in said cutter frame, and wherein an extensible drive connection is provided from said last-named worm to vsaid cutter bar for swinging said cutter bar at a feeding speed. 13. A mining machine in accordance with claim .9,"wherein the means for adjusting said cutter bar towards and from said cutter frame includes a worm coaxial with said shaft and adapted to be selectivelyv connectible therewith, wherein the means for swinging said cutter bar at a feeding speed includes another worm coaxial with said shaft and adapted to be selectively connectible therewith, wherein said worms are journaled in ,Said cutter frame, and wherein an extensible self-locking drive connection is provided from said last-named worm to said cutter bar for swinging said cutter barat a feeding speed.
14. In a mining machine, a frame member, a second frame member rotatable with respect to said first frame member about a longitudinal axis, a projecting cutter bar having a cutter chain movable thereabout carried for adjustment towards and away from said second frame member and for pivotal movement with respect thereto about an axis perpendicular to said longitudinal axis, a drivev shaft coaxial with said longitudinal axis, a drive connection from the forward end of a sleeve coaxial with said drive shaft, a drive connection from said sleeve for moving said second frame about said longitudinal axis, and means for vselectively connecting said sleeve with said drive connection including a clutch member coaxial with said sleeve and a rock shaft for operating said clutch member, alongitudinal shaft journaled in said second frame and disposed parallel to said sleeve and driven therefrom, a gear freely mounted on said shaft adjacent the forward portion thereof, drive connections from said gear for -moving said cutter bar towards and from said second frame, another gear freely mounted on said shaft forwardly of saidflrst-mentioned gear, drive connections from said gear for swinging said cutter bar at a feeding speed, means for selectively connecting either of said gears with said shaft comprising a clutch member interposed between said gears, and means for translationally moving said shaft with respect to said gears for engaging said clutch member with either of said gears including an operating member coaxial with said sleeve.
15. A mining machine in accordance with claim 14, wherein a rock shaft is provided for operating said operating member and wherein an interlocking connection is provided between said rock shaft and said first-named rock shaft.
16. A mining machine in accordance with claim 14, wherein a rock shaft is provided for operating said operating member, wherein an interlocking connection is provided between said rock shaft and said first-named rock shaft and wherein'said interlocking connection includes a sector on said first-named rock shaft adaptedto engage a sector on said second-named rock shaft.
17. A mining machine in accordance with claim 14, wherein a rock shaft is provided foroperating said operating member, wherein an interlocking connection is provided between said rock shaft and said first-named rock shaft and wherein said interlocking connection includes a flanged sector on said first-named rock shaft and a flanged sector on said second-named rock shaft, theflanges of said sectors being adapted to engage each other when one clutch member is in an engaged position and it is attempted tov operate the other clutch member.
18. A mining machine in accordance with claim 14, wherein a rock shaft is provided for operating said operating member, wherein an interlocking connection is provided between said rock shaft and said first-named rock shaft and wherein'said interlocking connection includes-a flanged sector on said first-named rock shaft and a flanged sector on said second-named rock shaft, the anges of said sectors being adapted to engage each other when one clutch member is in an engaged position and it is attempted to operate the other clutch and the flange of said last-named sector having an opening in the center thereof to permit passage of the flange of said other sector therethrough when said last-mentioned clutch member is in an intermediate position between said gears.
19. In a mining machine, a frame member, another frame member supported by said first frame member for rotatable movement with respect thereto about an axis extending longitudinally thereof, a projecting cutter bar supported by said second frame memberfor pivotal movement with respect thereto` about an axis disposed perpendicularly to said longitudinal axis, power operated means for rotatably moving said second frame member including ak rotatable driving member, a gear coaxial therewith, a clutch selectively connecting said gear with said rotatable drivingmember, and a clutch fork androck shaft for operating said clutch, a rotatable driving member journaled iny said second frame, a geared connection between said rst and secondmentioned rotatable driving members, a gear coaxial with said second-mentioned rotatable driving -member, a drive connection from said gear for swinging said cutter bar at a feeding speed, a clutch for operatively connecting said gear with said shaft, operating means for said last-named clutch including means for translationally moving said second-named driving member with respect to said gear operated by means closely adjacent the meansY for operating said first-named clutch means, said last-named means including a shifting member coaxial with said first-named driving member, and an interlocking connection between both of said clutch operating means to prevent the operation of one while the other is in an operative position.
20.-"In a mining machine, a frame member, another frame member supported by said first frame member for rotatable movement with respect thereto about an axis extending longitudinally thereof, a projecting cutter bar supported by said second frame member for pivotal movement with respect thereto about an axis disposed perpendicularly to said longitudinal axis, power operated means for rotatably moving said `second frame member including a rotatable driving member, a gear coaxial therewith, a clutch selectively connecting said gear with said rotatable driving member, and a clutch fork and rock shaft for operating said clutch, a rotatable driving member journaled in said second frame, a geared connection between said rst and second-mentioned rotatable driving members, a gear coaxial with said second-mentioned rotatable driving member, a drive connection from said gear for swinging said cutter bar at a feeding speed, a clutch for operatively connecting said gear with said shaft, operating means for actuating said last-named clutch including means for translationally moving said secondnamed driving member with respect to said gear operated by means closely adjacentthe means for operating said first-named clutch means, said means including a rock shaft parallel to said first-mentioned rock shaft, and a shifting member coaxial with said first-named driving member and moved with respect thereto by said rock shaft, and an interlocking connection between said rock shafts to prevent the operation of one while the clutch operated by the other is in an engaged position.
21. A mining machine in accordance with claim 20, in which the interlocking connection between the rock shafts comprises a sector on one of the rock shafts and another sector on the other rock shaft, and wherein said sectors are so arranged that one may engage the other upon operation of one rock shaft and the attempted operation of the other rock shaft.
22V. In a miningmachine, a frame member, a second frame member rotatable with respect to said rst frame member about a longitudinal axis, a, projecting cutter bar having a cutter chain movable thereabout carried for adjustment towards and away from said second frame member and for pivotal movement with respect thereto about an raxis perpendicular to said longitudinal axis, a drive shaft coaxial with said longitudinal axis, a drive connection from the forward end of said shaft to said cutter chain, a sleeve coaxial with said drive shaft, a drive connection fromsaid sleeve for moving said second frame about said longitudinal axis, and means for selectively connecting said sleeve with said drive connection including a clutch member coaxial with said sleeve and a rockY shaft for operating said clutch member, a longitudinal shaft parallel to said sleeve and driven therefrom journaled in said second frame, a drive connection from saidV parallel shaft for adjustably moving said cutter bar towards and from said second frame including a Worm coaxial with said shaft, and selectively connectible therewith, a worm gear driven thereby and a threaded shaft secured to said cutter bar adjacent the longitudinal center thereof and operatively connected with said worm gear, another drive'connection from said shaft for swinging said cutter bar at a feeding speed including a worm coaxial with said shaft and selectively connectible therewith, a worm gear driven thereby, and an extensible self-locking drive connection from said worm gear to said cutter bar including a splined shaft slidably movable with respect to said worm, a worm driven by said splined shaft and a geared connection from said worm to said cutter bar.
23. In. a. mining machine, a frame member, a second frame member rotatable with respect to said first frame member about a longitudinal axis, a projecting cutter bar having a cutter chain movable thereabout carried for adjustment towards and away from said second frame member and for pivotal movement with respect thereto about an axis perpendicular to said longitudinal axis, a drive shaft coaxial with said longitudinal axis, a drive connection from the forward end of said shaft to said cutter chain, a sleeve coaxial with said drive shaft, a drive connection from said sleeve for moving said second frame about said longitudinal axis, and means for selectively connecting said sleeve with said vdrive connection including a clutch member coaxial with said sleeve and a rock shaft for operating said clutch member, a longitudinal shaft parallel to said sleeve and driven therefrom journaled in said second frame, a drive connection from said parallel shaft for adjustably moving said cutter bar towards and from said second frame including a worm coaxial with said shaft and selectively connectible therewith, a worm gear driven thereby and a threaded shaft secured to said cutter bar adjacent the longitudinal center thereof and operatively connected with said worm gear, another drive connection from said shaft for swinging said cutter bar at a feeding speed including a worm coaxial with said shaft and selectively connectible therewith, and means for selectively connecting either of said Worms with said shaft comprising means for translationally moving said shaft in one direction or another.
24. A mining machine in accordance with claim 23, wherein the means for translationally moving the parallel longitudinal shaft in one direction or another for selectively connecting either of the worms with said shaft includes a shifting member coaxial with the axis of rotation of said second frame member and an operative connection from said shifting member to said parallel longitudinal shaft.
25. A mining machine in accordance with claim 23, wherein the means for translationally moving the parallel longitudinal shaft in one direction or another for selectively connecting either of the worms with said shaft includes a shifting member coaxial with the axis of rotation of Said second frame member, an operative connection from said shifting member to said parallel longitudinal shaft and a rock shaft for operating said shifting member, and wherein means are provided for interlocking the rock shaft for operating the clutch means for controlling movement of the second frame about a longitudinal axis with said rock shaft for shifting said longitudinal shaft which comprise a sector on one of said rock shafts, and a sector on the other of said rock shafts adapted to engage or be engaged by said rst-mentioned sector depending upon which rock shaft is being operated.
26. A mining machine in accordance with claim 23, wherein the means for translationally moving the parallel longitudinal shaft in one direction or another for selectively connecting either of the worms with said shaft includes a shifting member coaxial with the axis of rotation of the second frame member, an operative connection from said shifting member to said shaft and a rock shaft for operating said shifting member, and wherein means are provided for interlocking said rock shaft for operating the clutch means for controlling movement of the second frame about a longitudinal axis with said rock shaft for shifting said longitudinal shaft, which comprise a sector on one of said rock shafts, and a sector on the other of said rock shafts, said sectors being adapted toengage each other when either of said rock shafts have been moved, and one of said sectors having an opening therein to receive and permit movement of said other sector and lock said sector having the opening therein from movement.
27. A mining machine in accordance with claim 23, wherein the means for translationally moving the parallel longitudinal shaft in one direction or another for selectively connecting either of the worms with said shaft includes a shifting member coaxial with the axis of rotation of the second frame member, an operative connection from said shifting member to said parallel longitudinal shaft and a rock shaft for operating said shifting member, and wherein means are provided for interlocking the rock shaft for operating the clutch means for controlling movement of the second frame about a longitudinal axis with said rook shaft for shifting said longitudinal shaft, which comprise a flanged sector on one of said rock shafts, and a angcd sector on the other of said rock shafts, the ange of one of said flanged sectors having an opening in the central portion thereof to receive the ange of said other flanged sector and lock said lastnamed flanged sector from movement.
