Description

-Aug. 11, 1936. G. G. MOLEMA GAS BOMB WELL Filed March 24, 1934 INVENTOR. 65026.6 6. /70f/7/i A TTORNE YS.
Patented Aug. 11, 1936 UNITED STATES GAS'BOMB WELL George G.-Molema, San Francisco, Calif.
Application.March 24, 1934, SerialNo. 717,285.
3 Claims.-
:- discharged and in such a manner as to allow the fumes therefrom to float naturally around the object in which the receptacle is mounted; to provide a device in which a bomb may be discharged without harm to the one placing it therein, or damage to the object being protected; and to provide such a device of simple and practical construction.
One form of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which;
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away to show the construction,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and
Fig. 3 shows the device installed in a coin-car.
Fig. 1 shows one form of my invention mounted in the floor of a compartment in which it is desired to safeguard articles of value against attack from the outside.
The device may be made of metal or other fire proof material and comprises a hollow receptacle l0, having side walls I I, a bottom l2, and a lid I3. The lower portion of the receptacle ID has perforations l4, and H3, in the side walls and bottom, respectively. Through these perforations the gases may escape from inside the compartment l0, into the immediate atmosphere.
The receptacle ID has a flange l6 at its upper end, which can be recessed into the compartment floor l1, and secured in place by the bolts l8. Additional straps l9, attached at 20 to the receptacle H], can be fastened to the floor [1, to brace the structure securely.
The lid [3 is comprised of an inverted hollow member 2|, adapted to fit inside (as shown) or outside the receptacle wall It. The member 2| is secured by bolts 22, to'the plug 23, shaped to fill the opening in the receptacle I0. It is shown with a taper fit, but any other form may be chosen. Recessed in the plug 23, is a handle 24, mounted in a plate 25.
The numeral 26 denotes a floor covering such as linoleum, etc., which may or may not be used.
A skirt or baflle 21, is attached to the receptacle side walls I l, at a point above the perforations I 4, and extends outwardly and downwardly to a point sufficient to serve to deflect downward any, sparks emitting from the perforation l4 and I5. This safety feature becomes advisable when the device is mounted in the floor of a coin-car, where it extends down among the combustible, greasecovered chassis parts.
Fig. 3 shows the inventionmounted-in a-.coin-.---
car body 29, in position to permit the guard inside the car to have ready access to it.
The operation of my device as mounted in'a coin-car is'as follows:
In a coin car the general practice is to have one or more men inside the money compartment, in addition to the chauffeur in the drivers compartment. As already explained, the purpose of my. invention is to provide a receptacle Ill, mounted in an accessible part of the money compartment. In this receptacle ID, the inside man can deposit a tear gas or smoke bomb 28 (see Fig. 3), whenever any attempt is made by an unauthorized person to gain access to the money compartment. At the time of depositing said bomb in the receptacle, the inside man withdraws the pin in the head of the bomb which sets the bomb discharge mechanism into operation. He immediately replaces the lid l3 on the receptacle. As the bomb 28, burns in said receptacle II), it sends out a cloud of gas through the perforations l4, and I5, which completely envelops the coin-car 29, thus driving away the attacker. In the event of a lengthy attack the inside man can place additional bombs in the receptacle [0, as the others burn out.
As soon as the guard is aware of an attack being made, he removes the lid l3, and deposits in the receptacle body ID, a tear gas bomb 28, which is always kept near at hand in the compartment. The lid I3 is replaced immediately and the guard proceeds to don a gas mask 30, also kept near at hand in the compartment. With such a mask the guard can remain inside the coin car and not be affected by the gas discharge. On the outside the attackers are held at a distance. by the gas screen, and prove a ready target for the inside guard, or for police who may have been attracted to the scene by a siren or horn which the inside guard turns on at the time the attack begins. If the attack is persistent, the inside man can remove the lid l3, from time to time and place additional bombs 28, in the receptacle.
The bombs 28, lie loosely in the bottom of. the receptacle H], which is of sufficient size that several can be inserted at intervals without removing the empty shells of those previously inserted.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention, herewith shown and described, are to be taken as pref-erred examples of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1.A bomb discharge receptacle adapted to be installed in an opening in the floor of a compartment, comprising a hollow, open-topped, downwardly disposed walled housing having perforations in its bottom wall and in its side wall, and means for mounting it in the floor or wall of. said compartment, comprising a flange at the top of said receptacle and bracing strips attached to the wall of said housing and extending upwardly to a point adjacent said flange, a skirtlike housing surrounding said first-named housing and attached thereto at the point of attachment of said bracing strips and extending downwardly as far as the lowermost perforation, and a lid to seal said open-topped housing having an inverted walled member whose walls extend a substantial distance down the walls of said first-named housing.
2. In a fireproof bomb discharge receptacle adapted for mounting in a compartment to be guarded, the combination of a hollow, opentopped, downwardly disposed walled housing having perforations in its bottom wall and in its side wall, and. a mounting flange at the top of said housing for attaching it substantially flush with the floor of. said compartment, a skirt-like housing extending beneath said floor surrounding said first-named housing and attached thereto at a point above said perforations, and a removable lid adapted to seal off said open-topped end of the first-named housing.
3. In a fireproof bomb discharge receptacle adapted for mounting in a compartment to be guarded, the combination of a hollow, opentopped, downwardly disposed walled housing having perforations in its bottom wall and in its side wall, and means for a mounting flange at the top of said housing for attaching it substantially flush with the floor of said compartment, a skirtlike housing extending beneath said floor surrounding said first-named housing and attached thereto at a point above said perforations, and a lid to seal said open-topped housing having an inverted walled member whose walls extend a substantial distance down the walls of said first-named housing.
