The present invention relates to an improvement in metallic window pane seals capable of being easily and quicirly applied to the window sash to effectively secure the pane in position without the use of putty or the liire.
One of the important objects of 'the present in vention is to provide a device of this charanter which includes a metallic fastening' strip and a non-metallic sealing strip, both of which may be formed from sheet material and bent to a predetermined shape and the fastening strip provided with prongs for irnbedding in the window sash whereby to secure the pane in position, the non-metallic strip constituting a seal which is interposed between the fastening strip and the pane.
.il further important object is to provide an article of this character which includes a Haude on the fastening strip positioned below the upper edge thereof to provide a surface upon which pressure may be exerted bythe fingers or a i for forcing the prongsl of the fastener into the sash without danger of injury to the glass uw the tool slip.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special details of construction as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein lilre numerals refer to e parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary View of a window sash with the combined fastener and seal in position thereon, A
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the sash, y
.Figure 3 is a plan view of a portion of the bla from which the fastening member is formed,
Figure d is a similar view of the sealing strip, and
Figures 5 and 6 are end elevational views of the fastener and sealing strip, respectively.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, whew in for the purpose of illustration l have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral t designates the fastening member which.
` is formed of a strip of thin metal is bent along the dotted lines il into a substantially U- shaped formation, as shown in Figures d and 5 and also bent along the dotted lines shown at li to provide` an angular flange t. Each edge of the strip is provided with prongs t and it, respectively'. l
a sealing strip ii is also provided and preferably formed from paper or other non-metallic substance and treated with a coating of linseed oil and white lead to maire the saine impervious to water. The sealing strip is likewise. folded along the dotted lines shown at it into a substantially U-fsha formation in cross-section, as shown in y figures 2 and 6 of the drawing.
in assembling the fastening and sealing strips for placing in use, one edge of the sealing strip ii is inserted in the channel of the U-shaped portion of the fastening strip in an intel-'fitting relation, and as clearly shown in Figure 2 the ii-shaped portion of the fastening rnernber is inverted with the Mange d eatending outwardly and one side of the sealing strip bearing against the pane it. slits if are forined at spaced intervals in the sealing strip ii to accoodate the prongs t. Pressure may then he placed upon the surface of the ange d hy a tool in a manner to force the prongs into the window sash it.
.es shown in Figure l of the drawing the abutting ends ofthe fastening strips are preferably mitered as shown at it to insure a neat and work'- manlihe dnish.
it will he observed that the inner bent section i'i of the' metallic-strip t, that is the portion that is nearest the gime when placed in position, is of 2;, a slightly leas width than the outer bent section it, the edge of the inner section terminating at a point designated at iti in lille 5. s construction createa a tendency for the metallic strip to lean inwardly in a direction to tightly force 30 the paciring strip against tliepane when pressure is placed upon the device at a point adjacent the intersection of the dange d and section it or upon the rounded edge connect the sections il and a. it in the usual manner for securing the pane in .il tight, weather-proof seal is thus l claim: i. .a combined window pane seal and fastener ,lo
, comprising a metallic fastening strip and a non metallic sealing strip bent upon thelves into ii-shaped formation in cross-section. said strips being' oppositely arranged with one edge of the sealing strip dtted within the channel of the fas-1 g5 tening strip and a, double row of prongs formed on the fastening strip for imbedding in the sash of the window trarne, one row of said prongs being inserted through the sealing strip for securing one side thereof against the window pane, the s0 edge of the fastening strip nearest the window poing relatively short to cause the strip at a point adjacent said short edge to lean in a direction toward the pane when pressure is applied to the strip in .a mer to imbed the prongs in the sash. 55
5 dow sash and one of said members having its edge 2. A window pane fastener comprising v. meadjacent the window pane to be urged in l, directallic fasteningy strip bent upon itself to form a. tion toward 'the pone'when pressure is applied to plurality of substantially parallel members, the fastener at s point adjacent the short edge in prongs on said members for imbeddlng in a wina manner for imbedding the prongs ln the sash.
terminating short of the otheand positioned ROY L. EHELER.
