This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the waistband of mens trousers and alsorefers to= a method for constructing the sa-me by which the waistband may be constructed entirely with a sewing machine.

With the present day construction .of waistbands for trousers i-t is necessary that at least one edge thereof be manually sewed down. It is customary that the major portion of awaistli-band is constructed with a sewing machine, but it is impossible with present day designs to finish the waistband except by hand.`

This invention proposes tc soarrangethe parts of the waistband that they may' be sewed to- 15: gether by a machine in a particular sequence.

Another object of the invention is to construct the waistband V from an outer materialV band attached upon the upper edge oi the trousers'and an inner material band consisting oi a flat top 2W section and a bottoni section of J shape in transverse cross section and arranged in a particularY man-ner to obtain the advantages stated.

Stil-l further the' invention contemplates the i securing ci the adjacent edges of the top edge of 2Z5fthel trousers and the outerj material band, with the top edge of the short arm of the J shape by stitches spaced in slightly from the edges thereof forming iianges. Furthermore, it is proposed ,to attach the top edge of the long arm of the '30 J upon one of said flanges,` and to attach the top edgel of the flat top section of thev inner material band to the top edge ofthe outer material band in such a manner that it depends and covers the top edgelof theflong arm of the `J 35' shape. Y Y It" is further proposed to use lining' material for certain of theband parts arranged so as'not to interfere with the objects of this invention.

Furthermore, the invention contemplates a novel manner of attaching the pockets of the trousers on the band.

Another object of the invention is the construction of a waistband as described which is 4 simple and durable and whichcan be manufaotured and sold at a reasonable cost.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and 50 accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

`The waistband, according to/ this invention, comprises an outer materialA band II, and an inne'r material band consisting of a flat top section l2al and a bottonil section I2b of substantially J shape in transverse cross section; The 25 J'Y shape may easily b'e recognized in Figs. 2', 3 andE 4. The outer material band Il is equipped with a lining 2U which is secured in position by reason of having one of its edges conforming with the flange i@ and secured in position by the same 5 stitches associated with this flange. The pair of trousers is shown provided with a side pocket 2| and a back pocket 22. These pockets are secured upon the trousers by reason of having their upper edges secured to the top iiange I6, preferably by the same line of stitches previously mentioned. y The method of constructing the waistband may be understood from following the steps in proper sequence. The lining material 20 is placed on the 55 outer material band I 0, and the material I3, I4 (hereafter forming the J shape is placed upon the trouser material I0. The parts are then secured together with the line of stitches I5. The flanges I6 and I'I are then opened. The top horizontal section I2a of the inner material band is attached to the top edge of the outer material band II by the line of stitches I9, and the parts bent as shown for example in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

The free edge of the material I4 is lifted up to form the J shape and is secured to the flange I6 by the line of stitches I8. The flat top section I2a is of sufcient width to extend over the top edge of the long arm I4 of the J shaped material. It should be noted that the waistband has been constructed entirely by stitches which may readily `be formed by a conventional sewing machine.

The pocket 2l is of conventional construction except for the fact that it has its top edge secured to the flange I6 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This pocket is formed with a side opening similar to the construction of side openings in present day trousers. The mouth of the pocket is indicated by reference numeral 2l. This mouth is reinforced by strips 24 and 25 attached on the opposed sides thereof.

The pocket 22 is also more or less of conventional construction except for the fact that it is secured to the iiange I 6 (see Fig. 4) This pocket is formed with a mouth 22 in the material of the trouser, spaced down substantially from the waistband. The mouth 22 is reinforced and formed with strips 26 and 21 attached on the opposed sides thereof.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modications coming within the scope of the invention as deiined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent iszl. A waistband for trousers comprising outer material in the form of trousers and having a top edge, an outer material band, an inner material band consisting of a flat top section and a bottom section of J shape in transverse cross section, the adjacent edges of the top edge of the trousers and the outer material band and the top edge of the short arm of the J shape being secured together in one operation andv spaced in from their edges so as to form flanges, a line of stitches securing said edges together, the top edge of the long arm of the J shape being secured to one of said flanges, and the top edge of the at top section being secured to the top edge of the outer material band, said long arm of the J shape and said ange being secured together with stitches.

2. A waistband for trousers comprising outer material in the form of trousers and having a top edge, an outer material band, an inner material band consisting of a flat top section and a bottom section of J shape in transverse cross section, the adjacent edges of the top edge of the trousers and the outer material band and the top edge of the short arm of the J shape being secured together in one operation and spaced in from their edges so as to form flanges, a line of stitches securing said edges together, the top edge of the long arm of the J shape being secured to one of said flanges, and the top edge of the flat top section being secured to the top edge of the outer material band, said outer material band being equipped with a lining, said long arm of the J shape and said flange being secured together with stitches.

A waistband for trousers comprising outer material in the form of trousers and having a top edge, an outer material band, an inner material band consisting of a at top section and a bottom section of J shape in tranverse cross section, the adjacent edges of the top edge of the trousers and the outer material band and the top edge of the short arm of the J shape being secured together by stitches in one operation and spaced in from their edges so as to form flanges, a line of stitches securing said edges together, the top edge of the long arm of the J shape being secured to one of said anges, the top edge of the flat top section being secured to the top edge of the outer material band, and pockets for the trousers having their top edges secured to one of said anges, said long arm of the J shape, said flange, and said pocket being sewn in position in one operation.

A waistband for trousers comprising outer material in the form of trousers and having a top edge, an outer material band, an inner material band consisting of a at top section and a bottom section of J shape in transverse cross j section, the adjacent edges of the top edge of the trousers and the outer material band and the top edge of the short arm of the J shape being secured together in one operation and spaced in from their edges so as to form anges, a line of stitches securing said edges together, the top edge of the long arm of the J shape being secured to one of said flanges, the top edge of the iiat top section being secured to the top edge of the outer material band, and pockets for the trousers having their top edges secured to one of said flanges, said latter-mentioned ange being the top flange, said long arm of J shape, said top Iiange, and said pocket being secured in one operation and said flat top section being free at its lower edge.
