ADJUSTABLE GUARD 'RAILING FOR CHILDRENS SLEDS OR WAGONS F. HORNQUIST Filed Feb. 13, 1956 Patented June 30, 1936 UNITED STATES ADJUSTABLE GUARD RAILING FOR, 01m.-
' DRENVS'SLEDS R WAGONS Frank Hornquist, Bradford, Pa. Application February 13, 1936, Serial No. 63,767
4 Claims.
The invention relates to guard railings used on the platforms of sleds or wagons to prevent small children from falling therefrom, and it is one object of the invention to provide an exceptionally simple and inexpensive construction which is readily adjustable for use with platforms of various widths.
Another object is to provide a construction which may be quickly and easily folded into compact form for storage and shipment.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, description being accomplished by reference to the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the invention mounted upon a sled.
Fig. 2 is a disassembled perspective view of one corner portion of the guard railing.
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic top plan view illustrating the manner in which the guard railing may be adjusted according to the width of the platform upon which it is to be used.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a slight variation over the construction illustrated in the preceding views.
The railing comprises two side sections 5 to extend longitudinally along the edges of a sled platform or the like, a back section 6, two corner sections I extending from the rear ends of the side sections 5 to the ends of the back section 6, and means pivotally connecting said corner sections with said side and back sections in such manner as to allow said side sections to be moved into various spaced relations with each other as indicated in Fig. 3 according to the width of the sled or wagon platform upon which the device is to be used.
In the preferred construction herein disclosed, each side section 5 comprises a top bar 8, a bottom bar 9, and vertical rods or dowels -I ll extending'between said top and bottom bars and secured in sockets drilled therein. Similarly, the back section 6 comprises a top bar I I, a bottom bar I2, and vertical rods or dowels I3 extending between these bars and secured in sockets therein.
Each corner section I, in the present disclosure, comprises a front post I4, a rear post I5, and horizontal rods or dowels I6 extending between said posts and secured in sockets drilled therein. The front posts I4 are disposed between the rear ends of the top and bottom bars 8 and 9 of the side sections 5 and are pivotally or rotatably connected therewith. Similarly, the rear posts I5 are disposed between the ends of the top and bottom bars II and I2 of the back section 6 and are pivotally or rotatably connected therewith.
The means for pivotally connecting each post I4 or I5 with the rail 8, 9, II or I2 as the case may be, preferably consists of an integral stud II on the post and the socket I8 drilled in the rail, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the side sections 5 and the back section 6 are of the same height and are all disposed in strictly vertical planes. In Fig. 4, however, the back section 6 is somewhat higher than the side sections 5, said back section is somewhat inclined, and the same is true of said side sections, the inclined positioning of the sections 5 and 6 being obtained by making the uppermost of the short rods or the like I6 longer than the lowermost thereof.
The device is preferably constructed entirely a from wood, with the exception of glue and brads or the like, which may be used in fastening separate pieces together. The railing is thus light for inexpensive shipment and to also add little weight to the sleigh or wagon upon which it is used. In attaching the device, suitable clamps I9 or other preferred means may be employed. It may be quickly and easily applied whenever desired and may be removed with equal facility.
When not in use, the device may be compactly i folded with one of the side sections 5 lying at one side of the back section 6, and with the other of said side sections lying at the other side of said back section, in which condition, the device may be stored in small space. The device is also shipped in this folded condition allowing a number of the railings to be packed in a single carton or the like.
On account of the advantages resulting therefrom, the details herein disclosed are preferably followed. However, it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
I claim:-
1. A guard railing for the platform of a childs sled or wagon, comprising two side sections to extend along the longitudinal edges of the platform, a back section, two corner sections extending from said side sections to said back section, and means pivotally connecting said corner sections on substantially vertical axes to said side and back sections, allowing said corner sections to swing with respect to said side and back sections as said side sections are laterally moved .with respect to each other according to the width of the platform with which the railing is to be used.
2. A guard railing for the platform of a child's sled or wagon, comprising two side sections to extend along the longitudinal edges of the platform, a back section, said side and back sections each having a top bar and a bottom bar; corner sections extending from said side sections to said back section, said corner sections each including a front post and a rear post; means pivotally connecting the top and bottom bars of said back section to the rear posts of said corner sections,
extend along the longitudinal edges of the platform, a back section, said side and back sections each having a top bar and a bottom bar; corner sections extending from said side sections to said back section, said corner sections each including a front post and a rear post; the rear posts of said corner sections being disposed between the top and bottom bars of said back section and being rotatably connected therewith; the front posts of said corner sections being disposed between the top and bottom bars of said side sections and being rotatably connected therewith.
4.. A structure as specified in claim 3; the connections between said posts and bars consisting of sockets in the bars and trunnions on the ends of the posts received in said sockets.
FRANK HORNQUIST.
