This invention relates to fuel distributors for use with stokers which feed fuel such as coal into a furnace.
One of the important objects of the invention is the provision of a novel fuel distributor universally mounted with a stoker feed conduit to permit of angular adjustment of the axisof the fuel distributor.
Another object of this invention is the provision, in a fuel distributor having top and bottom fuel defiecting members, of means yfor variably adjusting each of said members about a horizontally extending, transverse axis, such means being controlled from without the furnace.
A further object of this invention is the provision, in a fuel distributor which extends forwardly from the delivery end of a stoker and which is in a flexible relation therewith whereby the axis of said distributor may be adjusted angularly, of fuel deflecting members which are adjustable independently of the fuel distributor as a whole.
Other and further objects of this invention reside in the construction of the distributor .parts per se and their novel relations one with another as set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a section through a furnace firing opening showing the distributor device of the invention in elevation with portions broken away;

The term forward as applied throughout the description and claims to parts of the device is used with reference to the direction that the fuel travels.
Referring now to these drawings, the furnace is shown at I0, having a front wall Il and the firing opening I 2 therein, through which projects the fuel distributor F of the stoking feed conduit S for scattering fuel over the firebed. Since this invention is chiefly concerned with the fuel diS- tributing means, only so much of the Stoker feed conduit S is shown as is necessary for a complete understanding of the invention.
The fuel distributor F comprises the body or tube member ld having anv arcuate top i5, the 5 tubular rearward portion i3 and a forward portion including the depending parallel side walls` il and i8. At its forward end, the fuel distributor is provided with the top deflecting member i9 and a bottom deiiector 2D, both of which extend L) into the furnace and serve to deflect the fuel evenly to all parts of the flrebed as projected thereover by a blast of pressure fluid issuing from a suitable jet head such as at 613. In order that the maintenance cost of the Stoker may be kept l at a minimum, the fuel deflecting members i2 and 23 which are subjected to the intense heat of the furnace, are` made separate from the fuel distributor F and are easily replaced.
It has been found in the installa-tion of stokers g to some types of furnaces, that due to variations in dimensions of the furnace and other factors such as draft conditions, perfect fuel distribution cannot always be attained except by alteration of the fuel distributor parts; this requires a repe 2 tition of work when these parts are renewed. To satisfactorily meet these peculiar conditions the present invention provides a fuel distributor adjustabfe bodily and in which its fuel deflecting parts are adjustable independently of one another 30 and of the bodily adjustment of the distributor device.
In carrying out this invention, they bottom fuel deflector is arranged to be received by a frame 22 which is suspended at its rearward end from the pins such as 23, 24 which pass through the upright walls 25, 2S of the frame 22 and the depending parallel side walls Il, I8 respectively of the tubular support member It. Extending downwardly and rearwardly of the frame 22 and 40 formed therewith, is a flanged arm 2l which is apertured as at 28 to engageably receive a hand nut 29 threaded to receive a stud 33. The stud 30 is mounted upon the pivot pin 3l passing through the bracket 32 which is secured to the front wall Il of the furnace i0.
The bottom deflector 2l] comprises a fiat portion 33 and the sidewardly curved channels 34, 35 surmounted by J-shaped abutments 36, 3l which converge into a common rib 38 extending 5o to the rearmost portion of said bottom deflector. The forward end portion 39 of the bottom deflector is provided with a relatively heavy section of metal in order to increase the heat absorbing capacity of this member to prolong its lii) life and also to maintain this deflector in its proper adjusted position.
Depending from the rearmost portion of the deflector bottom 2U is a hook 40 which is adapted to pass through the aperture 4I in the frame 22 and engage the arcuate flange 42 thereof. The bottom wall 43 of the frame 22 is depressed as at 44 to allow the bottom deflector 20 to rest thereupon, the flat portion 33 of said deflector forming a continuation of the horizontal wall 43 of said frame 22. It will be observed that the heavy forward end portion 39 of the deflector bottom 20 serves to retain this deflector in engagement with the frame or standard 22. In effect, the bottom deflector 20 and the standard 22 form an adjustable oor portion of the distributor device.
The top fuel deflector I9 includes a relatively wide front portion 84, a rear portion 45 and the ribs 46 which serve to rigidify the deflector I 9 for preventing its sagging when subjected to the intense heat of the furnace I6. The rear portion 45 is provided with an ear 85 and the rearwardly and downwardly extending arm 41, which are apertured as at 48 and 49 to receive the transversely extending pins 5D and 5I respectively. The pins 50 and 5I pass through the lugs 52 and 53 respectively, which are formed with the arcuate top I5 of the tube member I4 at the forward end thereof, and in this manner the top deflector I9 is hinged to the tube member I4.
Connected to the lowermost portion of the arm 41 by the pin 54 is a lever arm 55 which is slotted as at 56. A shouldered bolt 51 passes through the slot 56 and is threaded into the. tube member I4, forming a fulcrum for the lever arm 55. The lever arm is provided with a laterally extending flange 58 which is apertured as at 59 to engageably receive a hand nut 60 threaded to receive a stud 6I. The stud is mounted upon a pivot 62 passing through the bracket 63 (Figure 2) which is secured to the furnace I0 in a manner similar to that of the bracket 32.
Suitable means are provided for projecting the fuel into the furnace and includes the jet head 64 secured to the underside of the tubular rearward portion I6 and having jet openings 65 disposed at a plane above the level of the bottom'wall 43 of the frame 22. A bolt 66 passes through the rearward portion of the jet head 64 and is received at its ends in the lugs 61, 68 formed with the underside of the tubular rearward porton I6, thereby securing said jet head against fore and aft movement. At its forward end, the jet head 64 is provided with the outwardly extending flanges 69, 69al which rest upon the downwardly and inwardly extending flanges 10 and 1I respectively, formed with the underside of the tubular portion I6. A supply line such as 12, admits pressure fluid into the chamber 13 of the jet head 64, from where it is issued through the jet openings 65.
In some instances, it has been found that when the stokers of this type are erected, perfect fuel distribution is not attained, even though the top and bottom deflectors are properly adjusted. This is due, in part, to variations in the dimensions of the furnace and also to uneven draft conditions and the grade of fuel used. In order that it may be possible to readily and positively correct such faulty distribution of the fuel, the fuel distributor F is provided with a spherical flange 86, formed with the rearward portion of the tube member i4. The spherical ange 86 is received in a complementary seat 14, formed with the delivery end of the Stoker conduit S, and is held in any suitable angular relation therewith by a clamp 15 and the bolts 16 which pass through the flanges 11 and 18 of the delivery end I3 and the clamp 15, respectively. It will be observed that the adjacent faces of the flanges 11 and 18 are spaced apart sufficiently to allow the spherical flange 86 to be rmly clamped in the desired relation with the delivery end I3 of the feed conduit. Whenever it is desired to adjust the axis of the fuel distributor F, the bolts 16 are loosened and the fuel distributor is pointed or aimed in the desired direction, after which the clamp 15 is caused to firmly engage the spherical flange 86 by tightening the bolts.
By forming a universal joint 19 between the feed conduit delivery end I3 and the fuel distributor F, it is possible for the fuel distributor to be virtually aimed in the desired direction without affecting the distribution of fuel as determined by the adjustment of the topand bottom deectors. It is understood that the jet head 64- is fixed with respect to the universally connected tube member I4, and hence, the jet head is movable with the tube member I4 and is always in the same angular relation therewith.
In the operation of this distributor device, fuel which is discharged from the delivery conduit I3 of the stoker falls from the tubular rearward portion I6 of the fuel distributor F in front of the jet head 64. The fuel is projected by a blast of pressure fluid issuing from the jet head 64 and is deflected to the desired portions of the furnace as determined by the position of the deectors I9 and 20. the bottom deflector 20 intercept, in the instance shown, a major portion of the coal for lateral distribution. 'Ihis is accomplished by merging the abutments 36 and 31 into a common rib 38 which extends to the rearmost portion of the bottom deflector. However, if it is desired to intercept a greater or lesser amount of fuel for lateral distribution, the bottom deflector 20 may be raised or lowered by rotating the hand nut 29. It will be apparent that when the hand nut 29 is rotated to move it inwardly along the stud 30, the frame member` 22, which is carried by the pins 23 and 24, will then be raised upwardly, and hence the abutments 36 and 31 of the bottom deflector will be elevated, serving to intercept more fuel for lateral distribution. Conversely, when the hand nut 29 is rotated to move outwardly along the stud 30, the frame 22 and consequently the abutments 36 and 31 will be lowered, allowing more fuel to be projected forwardly into the furnace. Thetop deflector I9 may be similarly raised or lowered by the proper manipulation of the hand nut 60.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a novel fuel distributor has been provided in which the deectors at the forward end thereof are adjustable from without the furnace about a transversely extending, horizontal axis, which distributor is universally jointed to the delivery end of the stoker; thereby, producing a fuel distributor in which the distribution of the fuel may be effectively and readily controlled.
I claim:
1. In combination, a furnace having a ring opening in a wall thereof, a fuel delivery conduit, a fuel distributor projecting into the furnace through said firing opening, means for connecting said fuel delivery conduit and said fuel distributor, said means arranged for permitting,r angular axial adjustment of said fuel distributor,

2. In combination, a furnace having a firing opening in a wall thereof, a fuel delivery conduit, -a fuel distributor projecting into the furnace through said firing opening, said fuel .distributor including a tube member, means for .connecting said fuel .delivery conduit and said tube member of the fuel distributor, .said means arranged for permitting angular axial adjustment of said fuel distributor, a jet head attached 'to said tube member and movable therewith for projecting fuel from said tube member into the furnace, pivotally mounted fuel deflecting means detachably `connected to .said tube member, andmeans for effecting angular adjustment of said fuel defiecti-ng means 4with respect to said tube member.

In combination, a furnace having a firing opening in a wall thereof, a -stoker fuel .distributor projecting into the furnace through said firing opening, said fuel distributor comprising a tube member, a top deflector detachably connected to said tube member at the forward end thereof and arranged to be rotated for angular ,adjustment about a transversely extending axis, means for controlling the angular adjustment of said .top deflector, a frame member attached to the lower .portion -of said tube member, said frame member being provided with a fuel supporting surface and arranged to be rotated for angular adjustment about a transversely extending axis, means for controlling the angular adjustment of said frame member, a bottom deliector member .detachably secured to said frame member and means for projecting fuel across said bottom deector member.

In combination, a furnace having a firing opening in a wall thereof, a Stoker fuel distributor projecting into the furnace through said firing opening, said fuel distributor comprising a tube member, a top defiector detachably connected to said tube member at the forward end thereof and arranged to be rotated vfor angular adjustment Vabout a transversely extending axis, means for controlling the angular adjustment of said top deflector, a frame member attached to the lower portion of said tube member, said frame member being provided with a fuel supporting surface and arranged to be rotated for angular adjustment about a transversely extending axis, means for controlling the angular adjustment of said frame member, a bottom defiector member detachably secured to said frame member, and a jet head attached to said tube member and arranged to issue a blast of pressure fluid across said bottom deflector.

In combination, a furnace having a ring opening in a Wall thereof, a stoker fuel distributor projecting into the furnace through said opening, said fuel distributor comprising a tube member having an arcuate top, a rearward tubular portion and a pair of parallel sidewalls forward of said tubular portion, a top deflector member at the forward end of said tube member, a frame member at the lower portion of the tube member pivotally attached to said parallel sidewalls for angular adjustment about a transversely extending axis, said frame member being provided with a fuel supporting surface, means for controlling the angular adjustment of said lframe member, andabottom .deflector member detachably :secured to said frame member.

In combination, .a furnace having Aa firing opening in a wall thereof, ya :Stoker fuel distributor projecting into the furnace through said opening, said fuel distributor comprising a tube member having an .arcuate topa, a rearward tubular portion and a pair of parallel sidewalls forward of said tubular portion, a top .defiector member at'the'forward end V.of .said tube member, a frame member pivotally attached to the lower part of :said parallel sidewalls for angular adjustment :about a transversely extending axis, said frame member being provided with a fuel supporting surface, means for controlling the angular adjustment of said frame member, ya bottom ydeflector member detachably secured to said frame member, and `a jet head vattached to said tube member and varranged to issue a blast of pressure fluid .across said bottomfdeflector.

In combination, a furnace having a firing opening in a wall thereof, a Stoker fuel distributo-r projecting into the furnace through said opening, said fuel distributor comprising a tube member having an arcuate topa rearward tubular portion and-,a pair ofparallel sidewalls forward of said tubular portion, a top deflector detachably connected to the forward end of said tube member and' arranged to be rotated for angular movement about a transversely extending axis, means for controlling the angular adjustment rof said top deflector, -a 'frame member pivotally attached to the lower part of said side- Walls for angular movement about a transversely extending axis, said frame member being provided with a fuel supporting surface, means for controlling the angular adjustment of said frame member, a bottom deflector member detachably secured to said frame member, and a jet head attached to said tube member and arranged to issue a blast of pressure fluid across said bottom deflector.
9. In combination, a furnace having a firing opening in a wall thereof, a Stoker fuel delivery conduit, a fuel distributor projecting into the furnace through said opening, said fuel distributor comprising a tube member having an arcuate top, a rearward tubular portion and a pair of parallel sidewalls, means for connecting said fuel delivery conduit and said tube member, said means arranged for permitting angular axial adjustment of said tube member, a top deector detachably connected to the forward portion of said tube member and arranged to be rotated for angular movement about a transversely extending axis, means for controlling the angular adjustment of said top deflector, a frame member pivotally attached to the lower part of said sidewalls for angular movement about a transversely extending axis, said frame member being provided with a fuel supporting surface, means for controlling the angular adjustment of said frame member, and a bottom defiector member detachably seemed to said frame member.
10. In combination, a furnace having a firing opening in a wall thereof, a stoker fuel delivery conduit, a fuel distributor projecting into the furnace through said opening, said fuel distributor comprising a tube member having an arcuate top, a rearward tubular portion and a pair of parallel sidewalls, means for connecting said fuel delivery conduit and said tube member, said means arranged for permitting angular axial adjustment of said tube member, a top deflector detachably connected to the forward portion of said tube member and arranged to be rotated for angular movement about a transversely extending axis, means for controlling the angularv adjustment of said top deector, a frame member pivotally attached to the lower part of said sidewalls for angular movement about a transversely extending axis, said frame member being provided with a fuel supporting surface, means for controlling the angular adjustment of said frame member, a bottom deflector member detachably secured to said frame member, and a jet head attached to said tube member and arranged to issue a blast of pressure fluid across said bottom deflector.
11. In combination with a stoker fuel delivery conduit; a fuel distributor universally connected to said fuel delivery conduit, fuel deflecting means detachably connected to said fuel distributor, said fuel deflecting means arranged to be angularly adjusted about a horizontal, transverse axis, a jet head rigidly attached to said universally connected fuel distributor and means for effecting angular adjustment of said fuel deflecting means with respect to that portion of the fuel distributor to which the jet head is attached.
12. In combination with a stoker fuel delivery conduit; a fuel distributor comprising a tube member universally connected to said fuel delivery conduit, fuel deflecting means detachably connected to said tube member, said fuel defleeting means arranged tov be angularly adjusted about a horizontal, transverse axis, a jet head rigidly attached to said tube member and means for effecting angular adjustment of said fuel deflecting means with respect to said tube member. In combination, a furnace having a firing opening in a wall thereof, a Stoker fuel delivery conduit, a fuel distributor projecting into the furnace through said opening, said fuel distributor comprising a tube member having a rearl ward tubular portion and a spherical flange formed with said tubular portion, a spherical seat in said fuel delivery conduit for receiving the spherical flange of said tubular portion, pivotally mounted fuel deflecting means detachably l5 connected to said tube member, means for effecting angular adjustment of said fuel deflecting means, said means comprising an arm extending rearwardly from said fuel deflecting means, a threaded stud attached to the furnace wall and a threaded revolvable element engaging said arm and said threaded stud, a jet head attached to said tube member and arranged to issue a blast of pressure fluid for projecting fuel across said fuel deflecting means into the furnace, a clamp member firmly engaging said spherical flange for preventing movement of said spherical flange in said spherical seat, and means for relieving the engagement of said clamp member with said spherical flange whereby the tube member is rendered universally adjustable with respect to said stoker fuel delivery conduit.
14. In combination, a furnace having a firing opening in a wall thereof, a Stoker fuel delivery conduit, a fuel distributor projecting into the furnace through saidiiring opening, means for connecting said fuel distributor and said fuel delivery conduit, said means being arranged for permitting angular adjustment of said fuel distributor, said distributor comprising a frame member provided with a fuel receiving surface, said frame member being pivotally mounted in the lower portion of said distributor, means for adjusting and securing said frame member in any one of a number of positions, fuel deflecting means detachably secured to said frame member, and a jet head attached to said fuel distributor at the rear of said frame member and arranged to issue a blast of pressure fluid across the fuel receiving surface of said frame member and across said fuel deflecting means.
