DOUCHE Filed July 3o, 1954 2 sheets-sheet 2 Patented `une 9', 1936 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to vaginal douches and has for its object 'the provision of an inexpensive device which may be easily connected to a fountain or suspended container to receive liquid Vtherefrom and deliver the liquid to the cavity to be treated. 1t is also an object to provide an adjustable shield and means for controlling the discharge whereby the liquid may be held in the cavity as long as may be deemed desirable. Other objects will appear incidentally in the course of the following description, and the invention resides in certain novel features which will be particularly defined in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a douche embodying the invention.
. Figure 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detaillsection, on a somewhat larger scale, on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1. Y
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section, showing a modification.
Figure 6 is an end view of the nozzle shown in A Figure fl. Y
Figure 7 is a detail section showing a thimble fitted over the end of the delivery pipe.
Figure 8 is a detail section showing a further modification.
Figure 9 is a section on the line v9 9 of Figure 8.
The delivery pipe I is of hard rubber and may be straight, as in Figure 1, or curved, as in Figure 5. At its forward end, the pipe is externallythreaded and a thimble 2 may be engaged thereover to protect the threads while the shield is being drawn over the pipe, the thimble being removed and a nozzle substituted therefor after the shield is in position. In Figure 1, the nozzle is shown as a sleeve S having an internal stop rib 4 intermediate its ends and internally threaded at both sides of the rib. At its outer extremity, the bore of the sleeve is somewhat enlarged and is smooth, as shown at 5, to receive a hollow stem 6 extending from the head l, the extreme diameter of the head being approximately equal to the diameter of the end of the sleeve. Outlet openings areprovided in thestem adjacent the head and stop lugs or other projections 9 are provided on the exterior of the stem to impinge against the end of the smooth bore 5 and thereby limit the insertion of the stem and maintain the head in spaced relation to the sleeve. Water or medicated liquid, flowing through the pipe, Will be diverted by the head l and will pass through the (Cl. 12S-241) outlets 8 and escape through the space between the sleeve and the head with some force so as to reach the walls of the vagina and treat the entire surface thereof. Y n
in Figures 5 and 6, the nozzle is shown as consisting of a hollow or tubular body I0 threaded into the end of the delivery pipe and having radial vanes I I secured in its open'outer end, by having their ends embedded in the walls of the nozzle or by being xed tc a ring which is fast in the nozzle. vThe vanes or blades are obliquely disposed so that the issuing liquid will be diverted and will impinge against the walls ofthe vagina in a whirling spray.
At its rear end, the delivery pipe is forme into an elbow I2 having a `finger rest I3 atV the bend so Vthat the device may be easily and conveniently grasped for insertion into the vagina. The upper end of the elbow is internally threaded to be engaged with a coupling I4 secured-in the end of a tube I5 leading from a rubber fountain or bag (not shown) which may be vsuspendedY upona wall or bed frame or otherwise supported in a position above the patient. It will be understood that the fountain is equipped with a valve or other means whereby the water may be cut off until the douche is in proper position and that when the water is released it will ow by gravity to and through the delivery pipe.
The drain pipe I6 is formed integral with a sleeve Il and extends downwardly and rear-l wardly therefrom, the sleeve being mounted slidably on the delivery pipe and eccentric thereto, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. At its front extremity, the sleeve I'I is provided with a bead I8 and spaced rearwardly from said bead is a second larger bead I9. The bell-shaped shield V2|) is carried by the sleeve between the beads I8 and I9 and its innersurface is properly shaped to t snugly tothe beads and sleeve. The sleeve may be drawn over the front end vof the pipe while the thimble 2 is thereon to protect the threads, and the shield is similarly drawn onto the sleeve. While the shield possesses rigidity, it has suicient resiliency to pass over the bead I8 and spring into place behind it, the bead I9 constituting a stop to arrest the movement of the shield on the sleeve, and, for greater security, the shield may be cemented to the sleeve. When the shield is in place it houses the greater portion of the drain pipe I6, a rubber discharge tube 2| being coupled to the drain pipe adjacent the edge of the shield to carry the drainage to a suitable convenient receptacle.
The rear end of the sleeve Il is formed with a 1 bead 22 and afsoft rubber packing sleeve 23 is tted over said bead, as clearly shown, the. front end of the packing sleeve being cemented Yto the sliding sleeve, if desired, for further security. It will be'noted that the soft rubber tube or sleeve 23V ts closely around the delivery-pipe behind the sliding sleeve I1 and effectually seals theL rear end of said sleeve so that the liquid draining fromV theV vagina cannot leak past the end of the sleeve but must pass, to the drainage discharge pipe V2|. `At the rear of the packing sleeve 23 Va split collar-Mis mounted on the delivery pipe I, said collar having a small'ange 25 around its rear end and-a larger beveled flange 26 around its front end, said flange 26 enteringthe rear end of the packing sleeve. A clamping band 21, having mating lugs 28 at its ends, is disposedaround the split collar and abolt 29 is inserted'throughV Vsaid lugs and equipped with a nut 3D so that the vcollar may be rmly clamped tothe Vpipe and positively prevent rearward movement ofV the packing sleeve. VAsimilar clamping band V3| is 'securedV around the sleeve23 adjacent the rear Vend thereof toinsure the desired tight iii:V upon the main delivery pipe l to prevent leaking of the drainage. 1
Y To hold the liquid ,inv the vagina for a'statedY period, agstop is provided on, the drainagetube 2l. `Ihave illustrated adevice consisting of opof'the drainage tube and having oppositely projecting handle members; 33. When the handles. A are;,free,1the'tube will be Compressed, as shown "in Figure 4, so that the liquid cannot ow therethrough andwill, therefore, remain in the vagina. i Whenithe handles are pressed toward'each. other, the. tube will beI` released and theliquid then` In the. modification .shown in Figure 5,V the.
Ysliding.sleeve 34 is of greater diameter than the sleeve I1 shown in Figure 1., to accommodate the. .curvature of the delivery pipe and also provide. a lergecliamber for the. discharging liquid.
'At its;Y rear end, the. wall. of. Vthe sleeve is thick-` cned, f as at Yiiyanri.provided with an internal annular Agroove to receive the bead :i6-atv the Vfront end of the soit rubber packing sleeve 3l. A` clamping band; 3.8:like the band 3l., istted aroundthe sleeve VV3l and the before-described collar 2,4 jandiclainping band 21 are mounted at theglear of the1 packing sleeve.y
" delivery .tube in the sainevv manner as thesleeve.
' .Inthe forni shown in Figures', and 9, there is employed the same sliding sleeve 34 that is shown` in Figure. 5, and the packingsleeve V4l) is, engaged in the sliding sleeve, and around the 31,.. Inthis arrangement, therrear end of the.
packing sleeve. is conical in form and is provided with -diametrically opposite longitudinalribs 4l,
n and the.- split collarV 42 is formed with flared exjtensions 43'which engage around the conical-endv of the packing sleeve with the ribs 4| fitting in AVthe splits ofV the collar. VThis construction pro- Vvides, additional, resistance. to any tendency ofthe .es
drain tube to turn about the delivery tube.
VIn; use, the sliding sleeve is moved toward or -fIOm the forward end of the pipe l so as to estab- Y lish the desired effective length ofthe pipe, andv the clamping bands are then fastened to'holdthe sleeve, shield and adjacent elements in the set from., When draining.. Vthe liquid will pass lV through Vthe lower portion of the. open front ends Y of the shield andthe discharge tube and will pass Y to the drainagereceptacle. The instrument is simple and can be easily adjusted to fit the vagina Yand the form given l the rear end of the delivery pipe enables the operator to easily tilt the tube, when applying it, morder to. obtain the desired close relationv between the mouth of the cavity and the discharge tube. y 20 Having thus described the invention, what I Claim; Y 1.
