Patented June 9, 1936 PATENT OFF-ICE STOVE LID LIFTER Samuel Klute, south Bend, Ind, assignor to The Malleable Steel Range Manufacturing 00.,
South Bend, Ind.
Application March 28, 1934, Serial No. 717 792 4ClaimS- (01. 126-4211) The invention relates to stove lid lifters, and more particularly to meansfor lifting, asa unit, the anchor plate and lids carried thereby which cover the fire chamber of a wood orcoal burning cookin'g stove-or range, to facilitate and simplify the operation of supplying fuel to such fire chamber.
, The primary object of the invention is to provide'lifting mechanism of this character which is normally in an out-of-the-way position and practically concealed.
,A further object is to provide lifting mechanism of this character which raises the .stove lid :in a pivotal movement without inoperatively shiftingthe pivot endjof said lid.
A further object is to provide lifting mechanism of this character including a pivoted member normally depending freely but extensible for engagement with a stop to support the mechanism and lid in raised or pivoted position.
A further object is to provide lifting mechanism of this character positioned rearwardly of the stove and carried by an extension of the stove lid for movement through an opening in the top frame of the stove.
. ;A further object is to provide lifting mecha nism. of this character utilizing .a curved arm depending from the stove lid for lifting one end of said lid in an arcuate path and thereby pivoting said lid. 7
With the above and other objects in'view, the
shown in the drawings, described and claimed,
35- it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departingfrom the spirit of the invention;
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a stove to which my improved lifting mechanism is applied. V
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective View of a stove'illustrating the lid-supported and locked in raised position by the lifting mechanism.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of a stove in rear elevation illustrating the lifting mechanism.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in side elevation illustrating the support for holding the lifting mechanism in raised position.
Figure 5 is a side view of the lifting mechanism illustrating part of the stove in a section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of the stove taken on line 66 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, which-illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral Iii designates a wood or coal burning cooking stovehavinga base I l, front panel l2, side panels 53, rear panel l4, top frame l5, and an upwardly extending back guard IS. The top frame I5 carries lid I1-for the reservoincooking plate It, and anchor plate l9 covering the fire chamber; said anchor plate l9 carrying round lids 20 and intermediate lid2l, all as is conventional.
An; extension 22 is carried by anchor plate l9 at an intermediate portion of the rear side thereof, and this extension 22 fits into an opening 23 in top frame l5, which opening 23 extends rearwardly of the rear panel M'of the stove cabinet. A downwardly extending flange 24 is integrally formed with extension 22 and projects through said opening 23. At the opposite ends of its inner side portion, anchor plate [9 has integrally formed therewith downwardly extending fingers 25, and these fingers fit into recesses 26 formed-in the top frame l5, and are notched at 40.
A curved arm 21 is riveted or otherwise fixedly secured to flange 24 of anchor plate extension 22, and extends downwardly therefrom in closely spaced parallel relation to rear panel M of the stove. The major portion of arm 21is substantially arcuate whereby its center line substantially conforms to an are having a point on a line common to fingers 25 as a center; and its lower free end portion 28 is preferably straight and extends at an angle to the horizontal, as a. tangent to said are at that point. To portion 28 of arm 21 is riveted or otherwise fixedly secured, at the outer side thereof, the end of a second arm 29. Arm 29 is provided with a perpendicularly rearwardly bent portion 3|], from which the free end 3| ofsaid armextends in parallel relationto portion 28 of arm 21 and torear panel I 4 in rearwardly spaced relation to a vertical projection of the rear edges of the top frame is and back guard 16. The outer end of portion 35 ofarm 29 is curved at 32 and terminates in a bifurcated portion 33 positioned adjacent to a rearward projection of the adjacent side panel l3 of the stove. A handle member 34 is pivoted at 35 to portion 33, and normally depends vertically therefrom, as illustrated in Figure 3.
The back guard 16 of the stove includes a vertical member 36, as best illustrated in Figure 4, and the rear edge of said member carries a plurality of rearwardly projecting upwardly directed fingers 31, opposite which fingers said member is cut away at 38.
In the use of the device, handle 34 is pivoted to extended position, as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 3, there being provided therefor suitable means (not shown) for limiting such pivotal movement to desired extended position. An upward pull on the handle then raises the mechanism and anchor plate IS. The fingers 25 of this anchor plate, being seated in recess 26 of frame l5, serve to form a pivot bearing for the plate, whereby said plate is pivoted, and any tendency to move laterally or of said fingers to slide from said recess is overcome by engagement of notch 40 with the recess corner, as shown in Fig. 6. The curvature or arcuate form of the arm 21 is such that, as the lifting mechanism is raised, it will move freely through opening 23 in frame I5, and that it will continually urge the plate I 9 in a direction tangential to its path of movement or perpendicularly thereto; which serves additionally to insure movement thereof will be limited to pivoting. The off-set relation of the major free portion 3! of arm 29 with respect to arm 21 and the rear edges of the frame 15 and back guard [6, permit the same to be raised to a position as illustrated in dotted lines in Figures 3 and 5, whereby plate I9 is pivoted sufiiciently to permit large pieces of wood to be placed in the fire chamber. In this connection it will be seen that the positioning of the arm 21 outwardly of a projection of the rear edge of plate l9 provides an uninterrupted passage in frame I5 through which the fuel may be fed to the fire chamber. The perpendicular portion of arm 29 provides a stop which engages frame l5 if the mechanism is lifted too high, and this portion 30 is positioned, with relation to the pivot edge of plate 19, at an angle to the vertical, whereby the plate l9 cannot be pivoted to or beyond vertical position, and consequently the lids 20 and 2| will not fall or move from operative position on said plate. To look or support the plate IS in raised position, the handle 34 is disposed in one of the recesses 38 of member 36 to be supported by the adjacent finger 31, the handle thus being normally suspended adjacent the lateral outline of the stove but being extensible outwardly thereof to engage the supporting fingers 31 and to serve therewith to form a locking means for the plate IS. The extension 22 of plate l9, when said plate is operatively positioned on the frame, not only permits the lifting mechanism to be disposed behind the stove cabinet in practically concealed position, but also serves to close opening 23 of frame 15 in which the lifting mechanism is shiftable, thereby concealing said opening and enhancing the appearance of the stove.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. The combination with a stove comprising a cabinet, a top frame for said cabinet projecting outwardly of one side thereof and having a plate receiving opening therein, a plate pivotally mounted on said top to cover said opening, of a depending curved arm fixed to said plate in spaced relation to the pivot axis thereof and disposed below said top projection in spaced relation to said cabinet and a handle fixed to the free end of said arm and outwardly off-set therefrom whereby the free end of said handle is shiftable in a vertical path of movement spaced from said top projection to a position thereabove to pivot said plate by shifting said arm in said opening to a limit at which said off-set engages said top projection.
2. The combination with a stove comprising a cabinet and an upper structure, a top for said cabinet projecting outwardly thereof, having a plate receiving opening therein, a plate pivotally mounted on said top to cover said opening, of a depending curved arm fixed to said plate in spaced relation to the pivot axis thereof and disposed below said top projection in spaced relation to said cabinet, a handle fixed to the free end of said arm and outwardly off-set therefrom whereby the free end of said handle is shiftable in a vertical path of movement spaced from said top projection to a position adjacent said upper structure to pivot said plate by shifting said arm in said opening to a limit at which said off-set engages said top projection, and means carried by said upper structure and engageable by said handle for supporting said handle in raised position.
3. The combination with a stove comprising a cabinet and an upper structure, a top for said cabinet projecting rearwardly thereof, and having a plate receiving opening therein, a plate pivotally mounted on said top to cover said opening, of a depending curved arm fixed to said plate in spaced relation to the pivot axis thereof and disposed below said top projection in rearwardly spaced parallel relation to said cabinet, an extensible handle carried by the free end of said arm and normally concealed rearwardly of said cabinet, said handle including a rearward projection whereby the free end thereof is shiftable in a vertical path of movement spaced from said top projection to a position adjacent said upper structure to pivot said plate to a limit at which said off-set engages said top projection, and means carried by said upper structure and engageable by said handle when extended for supporting said handle in raised position.
4. A stove comprising a frame having a lid receiving opening therein, a pivotable lid, a lid supporting flange carried by said frame and having an elongated recess formed therein defined at one end by a shoulder, and a depending pivot bearing carried by said lid mounted in said recess and longitudinally shiftable therein upon pivoting of said lid, said bearing having an inclined face slidable on said shoulder and interrupted by a notch intermediate thereof, said notch seating on said shoulder after a predetermined shifting of said bearing relative to said shoulder to prevent sliding displacement of said bearing from said recess during pivoting of said lid.
