Description
y 1936- w. v. MYERS ammezs CONTAINER FOR LUBRICATING OIL Filed July 2, 1955 INVE TOR ATTO RN EYS Patented May 12, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application July 2, 1935, Serial No. 29,464 In Great Britain July 12, 1934 3 Claims.
The invention relates to tins or containers in which oil is put up and sold and to tins or containers of this kind which are provided with a filling and outlet nozzle that is closed by a cap or a hollow plug.
The main object of the invention is to provide tins or containers of the kind above referred to with means by which they can be used as lubricating cans, said means being of such nature that the spout forming a part of said means can for practically the whole of its length be housed within the body of the tin or container when the latter is not required to be used for lubricating.
The improvements constituting the present invention may however be used in the case of 1ubrieating or oiling cans and in the case of large drums or other large receptacles containing oil.
According to the invention a screwed cap or closure member is used for closing the filling and outlet nozzle of a tin or container in which oil is put up and sold and is provided with an externally screw-threaded nipple, which serves as a guide for a tube or delivery spout which is secured in any position in the nipple and a liquidtight joint obtained between the tube or delivery spout and the nipple by means of a cap nut engaging with the nipple and packing interposed between the outer end of the nipple and the cap nut.
In the applications of the invention to drums or like large receptacles for oil and to lubricating or oiling cans the same combination of extensible tube or delivery spout, externally screwthreaded nipple, cap nut and packing would be employed, but in this case the closure member may for example comprise a nipple having external threads to screw into the container and a cap having internal threads to screw over the nipple.
The accompanying drawing illustrates, by way of example, the application of the invention to a tin or container of the kind in which oil is put up and sold and the filling and outlet nozzle of the tin or container is closed by a screwed cap.
Fig. l of the accompanying drawing is an elevation of a tin or container of the kind last referred to provided with the invention, the spout or delivery tube being shown in its innermost position in the body of the tin or container. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same tin or container with the spout or delivery tube, shown mainly in elevation, fully extended.
Referring now to the drawing, I is the screwed cap which engages with and closes the filling and outlet nozzle 2 of the tin or container. 3 is a nipple which is secured to the cap I and is pro- 5 vided on its exterior with screw threads, and serves as a guide and support for a slidable tube 4, that constitutes the delivery spout of the tin or container when the latter is to be used for lubricating or oiling. The slidable tube 4, which is either expanded at its inner end, as shown in the drawing, or is provided at its inner end with a nut, so that it cannot be wholly withdrawn from the tin or container, and is fitted with a closing cap 5 at its outer end, is made of uniform diameter on its exterior and of a diameter which is slightly less than the bore of the nipple 3. The tube 4, usually (though not necessarily) will be straight throughout its length and is secured in any desired position in the nipple 3, with more or less of the tube 4 projecting beyond the body of the tin or container and with the outer end of the tube if bent pointing in any desired direction, and a liquid-tight joint obtained between the tube 4 and the nipple 3 by means of a cap nut 6, which is engaged with the screw threads provided on the exterior of the nipple 3, and a packing l of leather, oil-proof rubber, or other suitable material that is interposed between the outer end of the nipple 3 and the inner face of the cap nut 6. The cap nut 6 is preferably coned on its inner face, as shown in Fig. 2, to ensure the central part of the packing I being pressed against the exterior of the slidable tube 4 when the cap nut 6 is screwed onto the nipple 3 to form a liquid-tight joint between the latter and the tube.
In the case of the application of the invention to tins or containers in which the filling and outlet nozzle of a tin or container is closed by means of a screwed hollow plug the same arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated by the drawing would be used, it being understood that the externally screwed nipple would be made of such length as to allow of the cap nut which engages with the nipple being readily manipulated.
The invention possesses many advantages among which are the following:
The spout of the present invention by reason of the fact that it can be housed for the greater part of its length in the body of a tin or the like ensures the latter occupying a minimum amount of space and consequential compact packing and. ready transportation of tins or the like provided with the invention. Further, by reason of the fact that the inner end of said spout can always be located below the upper surface of the oil in a tin or the like delivery of oil from the spout may be effected whilst a tin or the like is in an upright position by merely pressing on the sides of the latter.
As above-mentioned the invention can, if desired, be used with drums or like large receptacles for oil. In this case the solid plug closing the filling and outlet orifice of a drum or the like is replaced by an externally screwed tubular extension and on this extension is screwed a cap to which is secured the hereinbefore mentioned screwed nipple that acts as a guide for the slidable tube or spout, indicated by 4 in the accompanying drawing.
Further, as stated above, the invention can be applied to lubricating or oiling cans, all that is necessary in this case being to provide the body of a can with an externally screw-threaded tubular extension. This tubular extension, as in the case of the tubular extension of a drum or like receptacle, is provided with a screwed cap to which cap is secured an externally screwed nipple similar to and serving the same purpose as the screwed nipple used in the previously described embodiments of the invention.
I claim:
1. In combination, a container for oil or the like having. a threaded outlet, a closure member for such outlet having threads adapted to engage with the threads of the outlet, a hollow nipple forming part of such closure member having an externally threaded portion extending outwardly, a discharge tube slidably mounted in said nipple, a cap nut engaging the external threads of said nipple and also surrounding said discharge tube, and a packing between the outer end of the nipple and the cap nut such that by tightening the cap nut the discharge tube may be held substantially leak-proof in any desired position.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1, in which the closure member comprises a nipple having external threads and a cap having internal threads to screw over one end of such nipple.
3. A structure as specified in claim 1, in which the container comprises a body portion having an externally threaded tubular extension and in which the closure member comprises a cap adapted to screw over such extension.
WAYNE VERNON MYERS.
