- 1 Claim. (01. 173-346) This invention relates to electric circuit closing devices and more particularly it pertains to time controlled electric switches.
It is one of the objects of the present inven- 5 tion to provide an electric switch of novel con-v struction especially adapted for operative'connection with a time piece of the alarm'clock type. 1 It is another object of the invention so toconthat it may be capable of attachment to alarm clocks of ordinary construction, 7
It is still another object of the invention so to construct a device of theaforementioned character that the circuit will be opened in a quick manner by a snap action to eliminate arcing.
Still another object'of the invention resides in the provision of novel means for operating the contact member'to move and closing position;
1 With the above andfotherobjects'in view,ref erence is to be had to theaccompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which:
- Figure '1 is a-rear perspective view of a con-- view of the device,
Figure 8 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view at right angles to Figure 7, and; I
Figure 9 is a detail perspective view illustrating the circuit closing member. In the present embodiment of the invention, the time controlling element is designated A, and is illustrated as a conventional form of alarm clock. v
The device of the present invention is designated B, and the same is adapted to be secured in position upon an alarm clock by means of a rightangular bracket or the like 10 which is secured to the alarm clock by means of clamping members 11 carried by one arm of the member 10, said arm being screw threaded to provide for struct a device of the aforementioned character to circuit opening" I I 9 shell and central contact respectively. As best 75 adjustment of the members 11 to clamping position. The other arm of the member 10 is slotted as at 12 to receive a bolt or the like carried by the member B and by means of which the member B may be adjustably clamped upon the arm 10 of the member by which it is carried. This construction is more clearly illustrated in Figure 8.
The 'deviceconstructed in accordance with the present invention comprises a socket formed of hard rubber, bakelite, fibre or other suitableinsulating material, and said socket preferably comprises two members 15 and 16 which are secured together by means ofscrews or the like 1'7 and '18 in a manner best illustrated in Figures '7 and 8. Mounted within the socket, there is the ordinary screw threaded socket shell 19 having the usual central contact member 20. Electricity conductors 21 and 22 extend from the illustrated in Figure'8, the conductor 21 terminates in a 'resilient'arm or contact portion 23 spaced with respect to'a similar member 24 to which alead or the like 25 is connected by means of a screw'26. The conductor 22' is connected to'a lead 27-by means of a screw28 as best illustrated in Figure 7:"
Mounted within the shell or socket, there is a contact completing element 30. This contact completing element is pivotally mounted as at 31 upon a bolt or the like 32 mounted in the sections 15 and 16 which form the socket, and this contact member has an arm or the like 33 which is adapted to engage between the contact members 23 and 24 heretofore mentioned to 90, establish electrical connection between the conductor 21 and the lead 25 when the contact arm 30 is rocked aboutits pivotal point 31 in a manner to be hereinafter described.
Means is provided for rocking the contact member 30 about its pivotal point 31, and in the present embodiment of the invention, this means is illustrated as a cam 35 carried by a suitable shaft or the like 36. This shaft 36 extends entirely through the socket formed by the members 40 and a spring 41.
The'contact member has'an arm-45 corresponding to the arm 33 heretofore mentioned but extending in the opposite direction, and said cam 35 is adapted to engage either of these arms 32 or dependent upon the rotation of the cam to operate the contact member 30 to cause the same to either complete or break the circuit of the.
electrical conductor 21 and the lead 25;
Means is providedto limit the rotating movement of the cam 35, and in'the present'embodi ment of the invention, this means comprises a stop 46 (see Figure '7) which as best illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawings comprises a bolt or the like 47 cut out as at 48 and spring pressed by means of a spring 49 to maintain that portion designated 50 in the path of movement of the cam 35 so that when the cam 35 turns, it will en gage the stop 46 and prevent further movementthereof.
Means is provided to give a'quick or snap" action 'to the contact member 30 in its movement 7 into and out of engagement with the members 23 and 24; and this means is best illustrated in Figure 9. The stem of the contact member 30 is pivotally connected to a member 56 carried 4 by a bolt or the like 57 which is mounted upon a suitable pin or similar member 58 The member 56 is slidably mounted upon the bolt 57, and dur ing its. sliding movement, it'serves to-place a spring or the like 59 under compression. Immediately the pivot connection between the stem 55 of the contact member 30 with themember 56 passes dead center, the spring which is placed under compression serves to throw the contact member 30-with a sudden impulse and cause rapid engagement and disengagement with the contact members 23 and 24 and thus prevent I arcing during the operation of making or breaking the circuit 7 It having been attached to the winding key of an'alarm clock in the manner "heretofore described, it will be obvious that when the alarm clock is set on at any given time, the shaft 36 a will be rotated by the unwinding of the winding keyand will operate the cam 35 to engage the arm 33 of the contact member 30 and move it to g v and the lead 25 as heretofore described.
The device operates in the following manner;
circuit closing position. Before this action takes place, the several parts are in the position in which they are illustrated in dot and dash lines in Figure 7, and during movement of the cam to contact'operating position, in which position it is shown in full lines in said Figure 7, the spring 59 is placed under compression and immediately the pivotal point between the contact member 30 and the member 56 passes dead center, the contact member 30 will be snapped either into or out of engagement with the contacts 23 and24 to complete the circuit between the conductor 21' cam be rotated in the opposite direction by means of the'finger piece 37, the alarm train or its spring will be again placed under tension, and
the cam will be simultaneously moved to disengage the contactmember 30 with the contacts 23 and, 24and thereby break the electrical circuit between the conductor 21 and the'lead 25.
.From the foregoing it will be apparent that-the present invention provides a new and improved device by means of which an electrical circuit may be established at any predetermined time, which electrical circuit may be employed for op; erating an alarm, radio, furnace or otherelectri; cal appliance as desired. a g a g p a While the inventionhas been herein illustrated-ina preferred form it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the S ecific.
