POLISHING DEVICE Filed Dec. 7 1932 INVENTOR TTO N EY Patented Dec. 5, 1933 UNlTED STATES POLISHING DEVICE Sergio Bay an, Lucena Tayabas. Philippine Islands Application December '1, 1932. Serial No. 646,174 6 Claims. (01. Ell-39) This invention relates to polishing devices, es-
ecially adapted for treating and polishing floors and the like, and. has for the primary object, the provision of a device of the above stated charac- 3 ter which may be conveniently manipulated to apply a polish to a floor and thoroughly rub the latter to provide a highly polished and protec-' tive finish to the floor and is so constructed as to accommodate a fibrous medium, preferably a cocoanut covering to act on the floor after and during the application of the polish to the floor.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a polishing device constructed in accordancewith my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view partly in section illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the device.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line l-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary elevation illustrating the attachment of the operating handle to the device.
Figure 6 is a sectional View taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Figure 7 is a plan view partly in section of a handle attaching bracket.
Figure 8 is a side elevation illustrating the bracket.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a holder including inner and outer holding elements 2 and 3, relatively spaced to clamp therebetween a portion of a cocoanut shell 4 and its fibrous pod 5 after the usual cocoanut meat has been removed, the pod projecting slightly beyond the shell to form a fibrous cup-shape to engage a portion of the outer surface of the pod with the latter projecting out.-
wardly therefrom. The inner element 2 is of solid formation and is of semi-spherical shape for the purpose of forming a Weight. Theinner and outer elements 2 and 3 are provided with alining openings to permit a sleeve 7 to; extend therethrougli. An attaching plate 3 is apertured to receive the sleeve '7 and rests against the outer brush-like portion 6. The outer element .3 is of element 3 and is equipped with pins 9 to embed into the pod of the cocoanut shell. Arcuate ears 1O projectfrom opposite edges of the plate Sto extend laterally of the sleeve 7 and have pivoted thereto a head 11 carried by an operating handle 12. The operating handle 12 is provided with spaced plates engaging opposite faces of the head 11 and the handle is also provided with a shaft 14 extending through an opening in the head whereby the handle is rotatably and pivotally connected to the polishing device.
The sleeve 'Iis screw threaded to receive a look ing nut 15 adapted to beturned home against the plate 8 for holding the latter to the outer element 3. The outer end of the sleeve 7 is closed by a removable cap 16 apertured to receive a 7 v stem 17 of a piston 18 slidable in a cylinder 19 which is slidably mounted in the sleeve 7 and projects beyond the inner end of the latter. The sleeve 7 and cylinder 19 are normally disposed vertically and the lower end of the cylinder 7 19 is closed by a removable cap 20 having a discharge opening 21. The cap 20has detachably secured thereto a polish applying element 22, preferably constructed from fabric and is adapt ed to contact with the floor along with the brush 0 portion 6 of the cocoanut covering or pod 5.. The upper end of the cylinder 19 is closed except for an opening to permit sliding movement of the stem 17 of the piston and is engagedby a coil spring 23 bearing against the cap 16 for normally urging the polish applying element 22 in engagement with the floor and. causing the element 22 to readily follow uneveness that may be in the floor.
The outer end of the stem 17 is apertured to slidably receive a flexible element 2i, one end of go which is anchored to the cap 16 and the other end secured to the shaft 14 and wound thereon so that by rotating the handle, the piston 18 may be forced downwardlyto expel a polishing medium through the cap 20 onto the floor. A pivoted catch 25 is carried by the cap 16 and may be moved into engagement with a notch 26 in the stem 17 of the piston when desiring to lock the I latter against movement.
The inner clamping element 2 is recessed to receive a lock nut 27 threaded to the sleeve? and cooperating with the lock nut 15 in retaining the sleeve 7 assembled to the clampingelements 2 and 3. While I have shown and described the preferred 1o embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction,' combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing fromthe spirit and scope of my. invention, as claimed.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A polishing device comprising inner and outer arcuate clamping elements, a coooanut shell and its fibrous covering held by and between said elements, and a handle connected to the outer clamping element.
2. A polishing device comprising inner. and outer arcuate clamping elements; a'cocoanut shell in the fibrous coovering located between and held by said clamping elements, a handle connected to the outer element, and means includinga member extending through the shell and the clamping elements to secure said shellIand'ele-- ments together.
3. A polishing device comprising" inner and outer clamping elements, a cocoanut shell'in the fibrous covering located betweeniandfheldaby said.
clamping elements, a handle pivotally and rotate ably connected to the outer element, a polish'res= ervoir carried by, the inner and; outer. elements, means operable by rotation. ofsaid. handlev for feedingpolishingmaterial from said reservoir, and. means carried by saida'eservoir. for.applying.pol-,--

. ably connected .to the outer. element,. a polish reservoir carried by-the innenandouter. elements,
means operable by rotation of said handle. for feeding polishing material from said'reseryoir, means carriedby said reservoir. for. applying polish to a floor, and tension means normally adjusting the polish applying means to a floor.
5. A polishing device comprising inner and outer clamping elements, a cocoanut shell in the fibrous covering located between and held by said clamping elements, a handle pivotally and rotatably connected to the outer element, a polish reservoircarried by the inner and outer elements, means operable by rotation of said handle for feeding" polishing material from said reservoir, means carried by said reservoir for applying polish to a fioor, tension means normally adjusting thepolishapplying means to a floor, a piston for forcing polish out of said reservoir, and means betweenthe handle and piston for causing actuation of the latter by the rotation of the handle.
6; A-. polishing; device comprising inner and outer clamping elements, a cocoanut shell in the fibrous covering located between and held by said clamping e1ements,a handle pivotally and rotatably connected to the outer element, a polish reservoircarried by the inner andv outer elements, means operable by rotation of said handle for feeding polishing material from said reservoir, means carried by said reservoir for applying polisli to a floor, tension means normally adjusting. the polish applying means to a floor, a piston for forcing polish out of said reservoir, a flexible element having one end anchored to the reservoir and'slidably engaging. the piston and securedto and wound on the handle for effecting movement of the piston by rotation of the handle.
