Description

1933. c. J. LAG ERHQLM CIGARETTE CONTAINER CONSTRUCTION Fiied March 24, 1930 INVENTOR flaw M ATTORNEY 5 patented Nov. 28, 1933 Carl Julius Lagerhbimg Attleboro, assiglibr Mormonism commence i a Evans case mpany, "North Attleboro," Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application March 24,," 1930. Serial moi/ essor '1 f" 'trclai ms. (Cl; zoo 4 1) which. will serve toprotect the cigarettesand make them readily accessible. Other objects" will be-in part obvious and inpart pointed out here-v inaiter. j
The invention: accordingly consists in the ii tures of construction, combination or elements and arrangements or parts all: as will be herein illustratively described' and the scope of the ap plication on which will be indicated the followingclaim a V j In. the accompanying drawing in-which are shown thetteaturesi of a selected: embodiment- 01 thisinventionzs-s I v r' V Fig. l. is a sectional view substantially on the line 1-. l.of:1?i g. 2; i r 1 Fig; 2 is: as sectional: view substantiallyon: the: line 2 -2 of Fig.1; i
Fig. 3- is: a sectional view onthe line 3@-'-o-3: or
Fiashand" Y Fig. 4 is a partialiront elevation. Referring tothe-drawing an open top receptacle 10 is adapted to fit about a. package of cigarotten or. to contain the contents thereof. This receptacle preferably made ot any suitable" flexible material, as leather orfabri anda. narrow band; 11 of metal; or other substantially rigid material .extendapartially about the rim thereof". a
Within this receptacle 1o isa resilient-wire member having; parallel arms 12: connected one with another by the transverse portion 13, at the rear of the device. The forward endsofthe-arms 12 lead respectively too pair of downwardly extending loops 14; flattened as indicatedat 15am ing, but their rearward portion lTmayhe pressed.
forwardly into. substantially the position indisated inbrokenlines in that figure. The arms 12- maybe secured to the under'face of" the corree;
sponding' portions of inwardly projecting flanges. 5
18 on the-band 11 by solder Many other: conveniient manner. The loops u, including the 1'2, constitute open loopsin the sense the a the invention are concerned they might be sepas adjacent ends. are not connected, and the loops are preferably locatedin parallel planes. While actuallythetwo-loops are shown as made froma single piece'of wire', so far. as certain features of vup.
rate,ualthoughicertain advantages'are secured by the. oonstruction shown. 1
a A substantially dome shaped cover- 20' for the" receptacle is pivotally mounted on the transverse portion or bar13s: of: this .wire' member; and on 7 the front wall (Fig; 4) ofthis: cover is. formed ,.'adependingVfiangeZIYW iQhJin the closed. position Of the 9Ver, is pted tolie between thesend' zg of? the rim. and substantially fill the gap therehetween at the'ijront of the-receptaclennThus the band 11 with the flange 21 substantially completely. encircles the rimofe" the receptacle; A 9 plate 30 is securedto the rear portionof. the cover and: on this plate are provided a pair .of v loops-31 and'an oifsetportion'32 having ltSElOWGl extremity bent. to form another loop-asi33v The" loops 8], loosely encircle the portion or bar l3,- to
form the hinge connection for the cover; and the loop 33 encircles in the same mannerthe portion onbarld on the wire member;
In this construction it will: beseen that the 8 cover 20:,and the loops-14am joined together; the angular relationshipof these parts being dependentupon the relative dispositionof the free endsof 'the-loops; and under the urge. in a rearward" direction'oi theibar lfirthe cover 20 is normally 5 held tightly in'closed position upon theframe or band 11, as shown in full lines-in the drawing. 1 When, however, the rear upright portions-'17 of I the spring'loops-are pressed in aforwarddirection into substantiallythe positionindicated-in broken. lines in Fig, 1, the cover is quickly swung about the barl3into, the open, orsubstantially' 4 upright position as indicated in vdotted lines. 1 Uponthe, releaseof thispressure, the, cover isinstantlyclosed asthe' members i 17 return: to their normal'p sition. Y The arms 12 and the-other portions of the spring member except the bar 13 and the portions of the arms 12 immediatelyadjoining; are preferably spacedi sufficiently fromthe band- 11 to permit the upper margin 35 of the receptacle ctoilie therebetween: as shown. 'Thismargin maybe attached. to theband in any suitable manner..
The cigarettes-are placed in thereceptacle 10in 0 an upright position substantially as indicated at 36,i and: their upper portions 3'7 project above the handlllg These projectingendsiof the cigav rettes lie withinrthe dome. shaped cap20 when 7 i such'capris closedposition and are fully pro:-. m
- tected thereby. When the cap is raised in the manner described, these projecting ends may be readily grasped and the cigarettes withdrawn;
When the device is intended to be used with the original package in which the cigarettes are packed, the receptacle may be omitted. The top wall and the upper portion of the-side walls 'of'the package are torn off and the, spring loops l l are then slid between the corresponding side walls of the package and'the cigarettes until the.
upper edge of the package lies within the band 11 in the same manner as is shown 'for'the rim between the ends 22 permits a limited yielding of'the receptacle. Sufficient ofthe sidewalls of the package should beremoved so that the cigarettes will project within the dome shaped cap approximately the amount indicated inthe drawing. The spring loops not only act to hold the package in shape, but also serve to hold the pack age in its proper position relative to the device.
When the portions 17 of the wire memberare press'edinwardly. tov raise the cover 20, the, bar- 16 might be. expected 'to slightly jam;or come press the portions of the cigarettes opposite thereto, but this does not occur to any material extent as the out awayportion of the band 11 or bulging of the portion of the rim of the package or receptacle therebetween. The cover '20 has risen sufiiciently beforethis jamming action would become material to withdraw the flange. 21 from its position between' these 'ends,..and therefore it does not appreciably interfere with the. yielding action of the-rim- I The term .dome is herein used inconnection with the'cover in its broad sense to include any chambered or elevated top cover or a cover shaped to provide therein a space into which the .contents of the receptacle may project.
' Itwill' be evident from .the foregoing descrip-r tionthatthe device forming-the subject matter of the invention is simple and compact in construction, may be economically produced, and is r 5 convenientlyacarriedin the pocket.
' thefeatures of the above construction without departing from the-scope of the invention, it is to .be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is'to be of an essentially practical nature. The-cigarettes are-adequately protected and are readily accessible. The device'is easily operated andmay. be
.As many other embodiments may be made of interpreted .as illustrated and not ina limiting sense. w
