Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in car door construction and in particular to a construction of doors of the type which are used as cooperating double doors of an automobile 5 freight car. Y
It is general practice to provide certain types of freight cars with wide door openings for the reception of bulky objects Such as automobiles.
VTherefore it is customary to use a main door, l0 which is slidable in the usual manner and is mounted in association with an auxiliary sliding door, which may be opened to provide the full width of the door opening. The auxiliary door must be made of a rigid construction, to withstand the thrusts applied thereto from the interior of the car and the vertical edge which forms an abutment for the edge of the main door is strengthened by a metal post or jamb member. The metal post may have attached thereto a 29 ller post and additional nailing or coopering strips, but the post itself has sucient strength to withstand the thrusts that may be applied thereto.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide improvements in the construction of the auxiliary doors, wherein the metal post is formed in an improved manner to serve as an abutment for the edge of the main door, and is suitably braced to resist rotation of the post about its longitudinal axis. K
It is a Specific object of the present improvements to provide a bracing member for the post, which has integrally formed therewith a stiffen- 3 being formed to cooperate with a vertical corrugation of the panel of the auxiliary door.
It is further a specic object of the present improvements to provide a construction in which the metal post is attached to the marginal edge of the auxiliary door panel in such a manner that shearing of the rivets through forces communicated by the closing movement of the main door is prevented.
Further and additional objects and advantages of the improvements will be more readily apparent from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the attached drawings.

Figure 1 illustrates a pair of doors comprising a main door A and an auxiliary door fB which are associated m sliding relation with respect to the car side 10. The doors are of the bottomhung type and are Supported to travel on al track 11 which is fastened to a side sill 12 through means of the brackets 13. Each of the doors has a pair of roller carrying brackets 14 sup- 65 porting rollers 15, which travel on the track. The brackets have the usual depending projections 16 to limit inward movement of the doors. The tops of the doors slide behind a depending flange of a Z bar 17 secured to the car side and guide 70 brackets 18 arefastened to the upper edges of the doors to overlap the ange of the Z bar 17 to prevent inward movement of the doors. Each of the doors A and B are made up of sheet metal panels 19, having horizontal corrugations 20 and vertical corrugations 2l. The vvertical corrugations 21 are disposed adjacent the vertical marginal edges of the doors. The construction is such that the panel members are of similar shape, so that similar dies may be utilized in the manufacture of the panels for both doors. Any suitable locking means such as 22a may be utilized for holding the doors in closed position and means 22 for effectuating an opening and closing movement thereof. v
The present improvements relate principally to the construction at the Vertical edge of the auxiliary door B which comes into engagement withV the edge of the main door A, As shown in Figure 2, a channel shaped stiiening member 23 90 is provided to t in the vertical corrugation 21 of each of the main and auxiliary doors. The stiffening members 23 are secured Vthrough means of the rivets 24. A structural steel post member 25 is provided, to which may be attached a filler 95 post 26 and a nailing strip 27. The member 25 includes a web 28, disposed transversely to the main plane of the doors and has its rear edge bent to form a ange 29, parallel to the door, so as to stiffen the post. The forward portion .of the member 25 includes a flange 30 bent to lie in the plane of the door and having fastened thereto the marginal edge31 of the auxiliary door panel through means of the rivets'32. Beyond the marginal edge 3l, the' member 25 is 105 formed with a stop portion 33 and a guide and overlapping strip 34. The vertical edge of the main door is strengthened through means of .a Sheet 35 which is fastened bythe rivets 36 and 37 in such a position that the sheet 35 covers the 110 vertical corrugation 21. The rivets 37 also serve to secure an angle bar member 38, which forms a stiffening member for the edge of the door and is adapted to come into stop relation with the stop portion 33 of the member 25. An additional guide plate 39 is employed and is secured to the inner side of the fiange 30 and arranged to overlap on the inner side of the main door A. A brace member 40 is utilized in order to brace the member 25 and prevent rotation thereof, having one flange 41 secured by rivets 42 to the web 28 of the post 25 and the other fiange 43 secured by rivets 44 to the main plane of the auxiliary door panel.
In Figure 3 a modified construction is employed, in which the metal post member 45 includes a flange 46 bent to overlap and be secured to the outer side of the marginal edge 31 of the auxiliary door panel. The post 45 also includes a flange 47 disposed parallel to the web of the post 45 and outwardly extending from the flange 46. A guide strip 48 is attached to the fiange 46 and to the door panel through means of the rivets 49. In this construction the brace member for the post and the stiifening member for the vertical corrugation of the auxiliary door are formed integrally, and comprise a member 50 having a ange 51 fastened to the web of the post 45 through means of rivets 52 and a U- shaped stiffening portion 54 disposed in the vertical corrugation 21 of the auxiliary door and fastened by rivets 55. The edge 56 of the main door will therefore come to a stop position by engaging the post 45 and will be overlapped by the guide and weathering strip 48.
The construction in Figure 4 is quite similar to that of Figure 3 except that a T-shaped member 57 is employed, having a guide fiange 58, a stop ange 59 and an attaching flange 66. The ange 59 is fastened to the web of the post 45 through rivets 61.
In the construction described with reference to Figure 2, the post member is so designed that it may be formed by pressed metal, but the fea- ,tures of the construction are also applicable to a construction in which the post member is a rolled structural section and in Figure 5 such a modied construction is shown. In this figure the post generally designated 62 is a rolled section h'aving somewhat the form of a Z bar, including a strengthening rearward leg 63 and a forward leg 64 which is attached to the marginal edge 65 of the auxiliary door panel by means. of the rivets 66. The leg 64 of the post member is designed to lie substantially in the plane of the main door and to receive the thrusts occasioned during the closing movement of the main door. The free edge of the leg 64 is formed with a fiange 67 which overlaps the edge 68 of the main door and serves as guide means during the closing movement of the main door and as a weathering protection. The wood filler 69 is held to the metal post 62 by a vertically extending series of bolts 70, the post being augmented and braced by means of an additional angle member 71, having one of its flanges overlapped with the leg 64 and riveted thereto, and to the panel sheets by a series of rivets 66. Said angle member 71 serves as a chafing plate and, in conjunction with the flange 67, provides a guide recess for the reception of the forward edge of the main door A.
We claim:
1. In a construction of the character described a pair of sliding doors having corrugated sheet metal panels, the corrugations comprising horizontal corrugations and a pair of vertical similar corrugations disposed adjacent the vertical edges of the doors, a metal post rigidly secured to a vertical edge of one of said doors, said post comprising a web normal to the plane of said door and an attaching leg parallel to the plane of said door, means securing said leg to the marginal edge of said door, said leg having an integral portion serving as abutment means for the edge of the adjacent door by extending between the respectve vertical edges of the pair of dcors in the closed position of the doors.
2. In a construction of the character described, a pair of corrugated sliding dcors having vertical corrugations disposed adjacent the edges thereof, stiifening members disposed in said vertical corrugations, a metal post having integral abutment means rigidly secured to the marginal edge of one of said dcors, said post comprising a web normal to the plane of said door and an attaching leg arranged substantially in the main plane cf said door and a flange extending from said leg arranged to overlap the edge of the adjacent door' when it is in closed position, the stiffening member for the vertical corrugation of the door to which the post is secured being formed integral with a brace member for said post.
3. In a construction of the character described a corrugated sheet metal door panel, a metal post rigidly secured to a marginal edge of said door 105 panel and a bracing member for the metal post, A said bracing member including a portion formed to fit in a corrugation of the door panel and serve as stiffening means therefor.
4. In a construction of the character described 110 a sliding door, a metal post member secured to the door and a brace member for the metal post, said brace member having integrally formed therewith a stiifening member formed to cooper.- ate with a corrugation of the door.
5. In a construction of the character described main and auxiliary sliding doors, said doors having corrugated sheet metal panels, a metal postl rigidly secured to a marginal edge of the auxiliary door, said metal post including an integral 120 v loo abutment portion for the edge of the main door,
a filler post attached to the metal post, a separate member, means fastening said member to a leg of the metal post in position to overlap on the inner side of the edge of the main door, whereby the fastening means is not subjected to shearing stress by the closing of the main door.
6. In a construction of the character describe main and auxiliary sliding doors, said doors having corrugated sheet metal panels, a metal post member rigidly secured to a marginal edge of the auxiliary door panels, the leg of the metal post which is attached to the marginal edge of the auxiliary door panel being arranged to lie onthev outside thereof, so that thrusts occasioned by the closing movement of the main door are communicated to the metal post member and a guide strip attached to the leg of the metal post positioned to overlap the edge of the main door when it is in closed position. f

In a construction of the character described main and auxiliary sliding doors of corrugated sheet metal panel construction, a metal post member rigidly secured to a marginal edge of the auxiliary door having a web transverse to the M5 plane of the door and a leg parallel to the plane or" the door, a T-svhaped member attached to said leg and said web of said post member, forming guide and abutment means for the edge of the main door. 150

In a construction of the character described main and auxiliary doors, said doors having marginal edges lying in substantially the same plane, a metal post member rigidly secured to a marginal edge of the auxiliary door having a web transverse to the plane of the door and a leg parallel to the door, said post member having an integral portion thereof lying between the aligned marginal edges of the doors and serving as a stop for the main door. k
10. In a construction of the character described, main and auxiliary doors, said doors having marginal edges lying in substantially the same plane, said auxiliary door having a vertical corrugation adjacent a marginal edge thereof, a metal post member rigidly secured to the marginal edge thereof adjacent the vertical corrugaiton, said post member having a web transverse to the plane of the auxiliary door and an attaching leg parallel to the marginal edge of the auxiliary door, said post member having an integral portion thereof lying in the path of movement of the main door and serving as a stop for the main door, and a bracing member for said post member secured thereto, said bracing member having integrally formed therewith a stiiening member formed to t in and be secured to the vertical corrugation of the auxiliary door.
