Y., assignor to The Symington Company, New York, N. Y., a corporation of Maryland Application November 4, 1930. Serial No. 493,413
Claims.
This invention relates to draft rigging and, more particularly, to a combined striking casting and front stop member with which are incorporated side webs adapted for connection 5 with associated draft sills and to function as cheek plates.
The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is the provision of a combined striking casting and upper stop member formed with side walls adapted for connection to the inner surfaces of associated draft sills, said Walls extending below said sills, and slotted for receiving means adapted to function as the lower portion of a front follower stop.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a combined casting adapted for connection with associated draft sills for the purpose of providing a striking member for an associated coupler and for supporting an associated coupler carrier block, said casting also having incorporated therewith the upper part of front follower stop means, and slotted for receiving the removable lower part of such stop means, whereby the bottom of said casting may be opened by the removal of the bottom stop means and carrier block to provide for the free insertion and removal of associated draft rigging and cushioning mechanism.
A further object of my invention is the provision of railway draft rigging involving a combined casting providing integral coupler striking means and upper front follower stop means, and removable coupler supportng means and lower front follower stop means, said casting having side portions adapted for connection with associated sills, and flanges extending from the lower parts of said side portions and adapted to underlie the lower edges of associated sills for increasing the riveting area for connection therewith.
Other objects and advantages of the invention relating to the particular arrangement and construction of the various parts will become apparent as the description proceeds.
Referring to the drawings illustrating my invention,` the scope whereof is defined by the appended claims:-
Figure l is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view of a combined casting embodying my invention and associated with draft sills, draft rigging and cushioning mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, horizontal sectio of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the combined casting and associated parts shown in Fig. 1, the associated yoke being shown in vertical section.
Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views on the correspondingly numbered lines of Fig. 1, looking in the directions of the arrows.
i Referring to the drawings in detail, like partsV Y being designated by like reference characters, there is shown a combined casting 1 formed with a forward normally vertical web 2 adapted to function as a striking plate or block, and
normally vertical side walls or webs 3 adapted to engage the inner faces of associated draft or center sills 4 `and be connected thereto, as by means of rivets 5.
The striking portion 2 of the casting has an upper horizontal web 6 extending rearwardly from the upper portion thereof and adapted to underlie and be connected with the sill cover plate 7. The rear edge of the web 6 is provided -with a depending flange 8 adapted to function as the front stop or upper part of front stop means for the associated front follower 9. The strikingportion 2 is desirably reinforced by the horizontal rearwardly extending flange 10 and a plurality of longitudinal,
normally vertical webs 11 extending rearwardly therefrom to the stop flange 8.
The sills 4 are desirably slotted, as indicated at l2, to provide for the reception of a horizontal draft key 13 which functions to connect the coupler stem or drawbar 14 to the yoke 15. The side webs or walls 3 of the casting 1` are also desirably provided with slots 15 to receive the key 13, the edges of said slots being desirably bordered by outwardly extending flanges 16 which fit the slots 12 in the Asill webs and extend therebyond to provide the desired area for the support and engagement of the key 13.
In order to facilitate application of the casting 1, the sill slots l2 are desirably extended to the outer ends of said sills, so that the casting 1 can be slipped in place after assembly of the sills. The front ends of the anges 16" are desirably continued or connected to the g front web 17 of the casting by webs 18 to properly reinforce the casting.
The lower portion of the front follower stop means is preferably provided vby a removable member or key 19 extending through slots 20 in the side walls or webs 3 of the casting l, said webs for that purpose being desirably extended below the bottoms of the sills 4 to thereby avoid further slotting and consequent Weakening of the sills. The key 19 may be secured in place in any desired manner, as by being headed at one end and carrying a retainer or Cotter 1'9 at the other end. In order to increase the riveting area of the casting for properly taking the forces applied to the stop portions thereof, outwardly extending flanges 2l are provided which normally underlie the'lower flanges 22 of the sills 4 and are connected thereto by rivets or other desired connecting means 23.
In order to provide the desired area for the casting 1, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3.
order to prevent undersired removal of the block From a consideration of Fig. l, it will be seenv that the flanges 21 extend both ways from the U-shaped supporting web 24, the sido walls 3 of the casting being flared downwardly, as indicated at 25, to strengthen the portions of the flanges 2l rearwardly of the normal rear edge of said walls or the stop'flangev 8 connectedthereto.
A carrier block 26 is desir-ably provided for supporting the .coupler stem or drawbar 14, vsaid vblock having shouldered portions 2 normally resting on ledges 28 extending inwardly toward one another, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3.
The .ledges 28 desirably have lugs 29 lying on either side of tongues 30 on'the Carrier block 26 for interlocking said block to the combined In 26, a transverse bolt 31 is.desirably provided extending through registering apertures 32 in the sides of the casting 1 and 33 in the carrier block 26. Said bolt 31 may be secured in place by nuts Vor other locking means 34.
The embodiment of my invention shown is particularly adapted for a railway vehicle havy ing a Yrelatively short overhang, so that the backstop 35 is relatively close to the striking portion 2. I have shown the horizontal yoke 15 abutting said backstop and embracing a relatively `short draft gear or cushioningvdevice 36, nor Vmally supported by a carrier plate 37, the ends of which are supported from the lower flanges 22 of the sills 4 in any desired manner, as by means of bolts 38.
In order to prevent undesired upward movement of the gear or cushioning device 36, a plate 40 kis disposed thereabove and provided with depending flanges 4l secured to the inner faces of the sills 4, as by means of rivets 42.
' railway velncle, a casting having webs connected The yoke is desirably supported at its front end by the key 13 and adjacent the backstop 35 which connects the sills by ledges 43 which, in the 'present embodiment, are provided by the horizontal arms of sections of angle iron'44 connected to the sills 4 as vby means of rivets 45.
From theforegoing disclosure, it will be seen that I have devised an improved form of draft rigging for railway vehicles involving 'a strik- Ying casting with an integral upper portion of Although the coupler illustrated is of the vswivel butt type, involving a rear block mem- 'ber 46 articulated or pivotally connected to the stem by means of a pin or the like 47, it will be understood that I doinot wish to be limited to this showing, as a rigid stem coupler may be employed, if desired.
Although a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated, it will be understood that modincation's may be made within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:- 1. In combination with slotted draft sills of a railway vehicle, a combined striking casting and Afront stop member formed with side webs adaptcdfor connection to the inner surfaces of said sills, said webs being slotted for the reception of a draft key, said slots being bordered by outwardly extending flanges adapted to llt the slots in Vthe sills and extend outwardly beyond the outer sides of the sill webs to provide the necessary area for engagement with an associated draft key, the side webs of said casting flaring downardly and rearwardly beyond the stop face of the front stop portion, and flanged outwardly Ato underliethe lower flanges of the sill-s for connection therewith.
2. A combined casting comprising portions adapted to function as a striking casting and front stop for an associated follower, said cast-AV ing having side webs adapted for connection to the inner sides of associated draft sills, the lower portions of said webs being outwardly flanged to underlie the lower flanges of said sillsyfor connection therewith, said webs being extended below saidflanges and provided with normally horizontal webs underlying said sill flanges, and providing means for supporting an associated key adapted to function as the lower portion of front stop means for an associated its rear edge to form a front stop portion for an associated follower, the lower portions of said ing extended below said flanges and slotted for receiving an associated key adapted to function `as the lower portion of front stop means for said follower.
4. In combination with flanged draft sills of a to the inner sides of said sills, the lower porvtions of said webs having flanges Vunderlying the lower flanges of said sills and connected thereto, said 4webs being extended below said flanges and there slotted to receive and support an associated key adapted to function as a front stop portion for an associated follower.
5. In combination with flanged draft sills of a railway vehicle, a combined casting comprising side portions connected to said sills, a cover plate adapted to connect said sills, said casting `having an upper web underlying said cover `plate for connection thereto, said upper web connecting said side portions and flanged at its `rear edge to form a front stop portion for an associated follower, said side portions extending downwardly and having flanges underlying the lower flanges ofsaid sills and connected thereto, said side portions being extended below said sill flanges and there formed with slots forre-V ceiving an associated key adapted to cooperate with the flange at the rear edge of the upper web and function as a lower portion of front stop means for said follower.
