Description

F. M. HOOVER Oct. 31, 1933.
TOY
Filed July 26, 1933 Z7 INVENTOR. FRANClS M. HOOVER.
Patented Oct. 31, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 6 Claims.
My invention relates to a new and useful toy I arranged to make a combination of devices therefrom, namely a table, bed and cradle.
The object or my invention is to provide four legs pivoted to cross members and having .a central member spanning the cross members for tying the parts together. A further object is to provide horizontal grooves in the legs above the cross members for the reception of end boards for forming a table top. A further object is to provide the end boards and the central cross member with rabbets for forming a locking device between the members. A further object is to provide the legs with longitudinal grooves for reception of the aforementioned end members when it is desired to use the device as a bed. A further object is to provide additional members received in the grooves in the legs and provided with rabbets for engaging the rabbets in the central member for completing the bottom of the bed. A further object is to provide cradle members having extensions arranged to be received in the cross grooves in the legs and having rabbets for engaging cooperating rabbets in the insert members for locking the rocker members to the bed and forming a cradle.
My invention will be further readily understood irom the following description and claims, and from the drawing in which latter:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the device assembled as a table.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of the same, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a cross section similar to Fig. 2, with the table inverted and the parts re-arranged to form a bed. 7
Fig. 5 is a similar view with the rocker members assembled thereto, and;
Fig. 6 is an end view of the device assembled to Iform a cradle.
My improved toy comprises four legs arranged in pairs indicated at 11 and 12. Each pair of legs is pivoted to a cross member 13 by screws 14. End members 15 join the respective pairs of legs and are glued in grooves 16. A central spanning member 17 is'suitably glued or otherwise secured to the cross members 13 and is provided with a pair of rabbets 18. The legs 11 and 12 are provided with horizontal grooves 19 directly above the cross members, arranged to receive panels 20 and 21 which are also provided with cooperating rabbets 22 and forming a lock between the central spanning member 17 and the end board when it is desired to arrange the device in the form of a table. The interlocking of the rabbets prevents the legs from folding and forms a very rigid device which can be easily disseinbled and formed into a bed by inverting the device, removing the panels 20 and 21 and insertingthem in the extensions of the grooves 16. Additional panels are provided, indicated at 23 and 24, with rabbets 25 and 26 at their respective ends for engagement with the central spanning member 17, being also received in the slots 19 of the legs for'forming the bottom of the device when it is desired to use it as a bed. Rocker members 27 are provided, having extensions 28 secured thereto and provided with the rabbets 29 at the ends of the extensions for interlocking with the rabbets 26 of the panels 23 and 24. The extensions 28 are also received in the grooves in the legs thus forming a cradle out of the bed.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that with the parts aforementioned a child can readily assemble the device to form either a table,'bed or cradle as desired without the aid-of any tools.
I prefer to form the various parts of my device out of ply-wood to insure greater strength and durability although the device may be made from any suitable material.
The device is so arranged that when not in assembled form, the legs can be folded downwardly about their pivot points and all the parts packed together to form a very small package whereby a minimum amount of space is needed to stock the same in stores or for shipment.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a toy comprising four legs pivoted to a pair of cross-members, a secondpair of crossmembers secured to said legs, a central member spanning and secured to said first named crossmember, end members, and horizontal grooves in said legs arranged to receive said end members for forming a table.
2. In a toy comprising four legs pivoted to a pair of cross-members, a second pair of cross- 7 members secured to said legs, a central member spanning and secured to said first named crossmembers, removable end members, said central member and said end members provided with rabbets, horizontal grooves in said legs arranged to receive said end members for forming a table and locking the whole together.
3. In a toy comprising four legs pivoted to a pair of cross-members, a second pair of crossmembers secured to said legs, horizontal grooves in said legs above said cross-members, longitudinal grooves in said legs below said crossmembers and panels arranged to'be received in said grooves for interchangeably forming a table or bed.
4. In a toy comprising four legs pivoted to a pair of cross-members, a second pair of crossmembers secured to said legs, horizontal grooves in said legs above said cross-members, longitudinal grooves in said legs below said crossmembers and panels arrangedto be received in said grooves for interchangeably forming a table or bed and rockers having extensions received in said horizontal grooves for forming a cradle.
5. In a toy comprising four legs pivoted to apair of cross-members, a second pair of crossmembers secured to said legs, a central member spanning said first named cross-members, horibers, longitudinal grooves in said legs below said cross-members and panels arranged to be received in said grooves for interchangeably forming a table or bed, and said central member and said panels provided with coacting rabbets for locking said parts together.
6. In a toy comprising four legs pivoted to a pair of cross-members, a second pair of crossmembers secured to said legs, a central member secured to said first named cross-member, horizontal grooves in said legs above said crossmembers, longitudinal grooves in said legs below said cross-members and panels arranged to be received in said grooves for interchangeably forming a table or bed and said central member and panels provided with coacting rabbets, and rockers having extensions received in said horizontal grooves for forming a cradle.
