IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOARD ATTACHMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,254, dated July 17, 1877; application filed June 2, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HUNTER, of the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash-Board Attachments; and the following is a clear, full, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which is shown a perspective of my improved device adjusted for use in connection with an ordinary wash-board.

The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and efficient device which shall be with in the reach of the many, .and whose opera tionshall be so simple that anyone intelligent enough to wash clothes at all can readily understand its operation and advantage.

To the foregoing end, my invention consists in a hollow perforated fluted cylinder, D, hung in a frame, as shown, consisting of two bent-arms or side pieces, B B, having sockets b 1), into which the ends of the handle A are inserted. These sockets are preferably of considerable extent, to make the parts quite rigid with relation to each other.

The other extremities of the side pieces B B are provided with boxes 0 G, in which friction-rollers c c are hung. The roller is provided with metallic journals E, constructed and attached so-as to permit the free ingress of water to the interior of the cylinder. They are preferably connected to the cylinder by means of diverging bars 6 c 0 attached to a fiat ring, f, which serves as a guard to prevent the egress of the water, except through the perforations in the cylinder.

The boxes 0 O serve to effectually guard the clothing from contact with the frictionrollers, and thereby prevent the clothing from being wound around them and torn or soiled.

This device is placed astride of an ordinary wash-board, the rollers being beneath and riding on the under side thereof.

By means of the handle or part A a leverage is obtained, and any desired pressure may be exerted through the roller on the goods to be washed, and by reason of the hollow space in the roller, and its perforations, water may be drawn up to flow through the perforations upon the goods while being pressed between the roller and wash-board.

The fluted surfaces of the parts, when moving with relation to each other, cause a most eflicient cleansing manipulation without rub bing, and, consequently, prevents a wearing of the material during the process of washing.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A portable attachment for wash-boards, consisting of the frame A B B, formed with bent side pieces and friction-roller boxes 0 O, in combination with the perforated hollow fluted cylinder D, substantially as specified.
