Description

l DOUBLE ACTING ENGINE Filed Aug. 6, 1931 A TTORNEYS.
Patented Oct. 24, n 1933 ,UNITED STATEs v l 1,932,142 DOUBLE ACTING ENGINE Arthrfmrai'ge, Detroit, Mich.
Application August 6, 1931. seriarNatsseo s claims. (c1, 12s- 57) This invention relates'to internal combustion enginesV employing reciprocating pistons and more particularly to engines of the double acting type. l
An object of this invention is an engine includring a block having a cylindrical bore and a coaxial cylindrical counterbore, the 'block having passages leading into the counterbore, for admitting an explosive mixture thereinto, at the lower and upper ends of the latter. Slidably disposed within the bore Vand counterbore of the block is a hollow trunk piston having an annular ledge at its upper end. The skirt of the piston slidably engages the wall of the bore and the ledge slidably engages the wall of the counterbore. As the explosive mixtures, introduced as above described, are ignited alternately, force is imparted to the piston, first on the under side of the ledge to drive the piston upwardly, and then on the top surface of the ledge to drive the piston downwardly. Above the block is a water cooled jacketed head having a cylindrical water filled part projecting into the piston thru the top end of the latter. Connected to the piston near its lower end and projecting thru the latter is a connecting rod which may be connected to a crank in the usual manner.
If desired, the upper portion of the piston skirt is made slightly smaller than the lower portion so it will clear the upper Wall of the bore.
Still further objects will readily occur to those skilled in the art upon reference to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which The figure shows in cross section an embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, it Will be seen that there is provided a block comprisingv two parts, denoted 10 and 11, respectively, these parts being bolted to and engaging each other on the parting line indicated at 12. The part 10 is provided with a cylindrical bore 14 and the part 11 is provided with a cylindrical counterbore 16 coaxial with the bore. The Walls ofthe block parts 10 and 11 are made hollow so as to provide jackets for the cooling medium, indicated at 18 and which in general, is water. A head 20 is disposed above the block and is secured thereto by bolts, the head and block engaging on the parting line 22.
Disposed within the bore and counterbore is a piston 26 having open ends and having at its upper end an annular ledge 28. The latter is of such a diameter that as the piston reciprocates in the bore and counterbore the ledge slidingly engages the wall of the counterbore 18, and the lower portion of the piston skirt, slidinglyv engages the'wall of the bore 14. The portion between the ledge and the lower portion of the skirt is made slightly smaller than the latter, so that as'the piston reciprocates, the upper portion will clear the wall of the bore 14, in a manner readily seen.
The block is provided with passages 30 and 32 'controlled by valves 33 and opening yinto the counterbore. These passages which are like the usual inlet valve passage in the ordinary autoproperly timed for this purpose. When the mix- 'ture in the counterbore below the ledge 28 explodes due to the action of the spark plug 36, y
force will be imparted against the under surface mobile cylinder block admity explosive mixture -into the counterbore alternately, the valve being plug 39, force will be imparted against the upper surface of the ledge, driving the piston downwardly and imparting a downward thrust upon the connecting rod. Suitable cams indicated at 40 and mountedv upon cam shaft 41 valves 33.
An important feature of the invention resides in the construction of the head 20. The latter is provided with a cylindrical cup shaped part are provided to .actuate the 46 which is disposed within the hollow piston, projecting thru theA open end of the latter. The
interior wall of the piston engages the exterior of thiscylindrical part and as the piston reciprocates it is correspondingly guided by the latter as well as by the engagement of its skirt and its*-` ledge with the walls of the bore and counterbore. Further the cylindrical part 46 of the head being filled with a cooling medium such as water,
cools the piston eiectively as'can readily be seen.
While exhaust passages, exhaust valves, etc.
have not been shown, it will clearly be understood that such are intended to be provided, the disclosure being merely indicative of applicants improvement per se.
Now .havingk described the invention and the-y preferred embodimentthereof, it is to be understood that the said invention is to be limited, not to the specific claims herein set forth, but only by the scope of the claims which follow:
What I claim is:
