In .my copending application, Serial No. 519,943, filed March 4, 1931, I have shown and j '5- described an end cap for argolf club grip adapted to secure the end of thejgrip as well as prevent damage thereto and the resulting fraying and the like, andthe cap of the present invention isadapted for similar `use. Theprimary object of this `invention is to provide a novel end cap of the foregoing description which may be so secured in position that relative rotation between the cap and ,the end of the club will .be prevented and an object,fanci1lary to the foregoing, isto provide an v.end cap embodying a formed portionwhich may be securely clamped to the'end of the club. c Y g Other and further'objects will appear hereinafter. `In the accompanying drawingIj'have fragmentally illustrated a golf club grip ofl annular cross-section but it is withinthe purview of lmy invention to `employ a grip-of polygonal cross-v section and when such a 'grip' is provided the ,periphery of my `novel capvwill' conformto the` periphery of the grip. IhavealsoA illustrated` my invention inconnection with so-called belltop grips which are `of somewhatfrusto-conical configuration 'with the flared end thereof 4dis- 4 posed at the outer end ofthe grip but my invention is not limited t'o' use with `grips ofr this particular shape. The' bell-top configuration, in the lillustrated embodiment of the invention, is formed on the body member of my improved cap whichjmay be lin the nature of fan end plug adapted to be inserted into the end of the `hollow metal'shaft 6 of the'club- However, when the invention is used-with "a wooden shafted club, this 'configuration 'will beprovided on the upper end of .such shaft.

The cap is preferably of pleasing appearance and this may be enhanced by inserting a plug 20, of pyroxyline or other suitable sheet material, in the recess '13 and this plug may be of a blending or contrasting color relative to the main body portion of the cap. The plug isY tightly pressed into the recess 14 to prevent displacement and if desired a suitable adhesive may be used to further insure against displacement. If the plug and/o1` the body portion 12 be of pyroxyline material, a small amount of acetone will be introduced into the recess which by its chemical action on such material will secure the plug in the recess. The plug conceals the end of the securing device 15 and prevents undesired removal or displacement thereof.

The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 3 is substantially similar to that shown in Fig. 1 but-in thisinstance the depending ange 18 Vhas the free edge thereof tapered as indicatedV at 19 whereby this edge may be alined with the periphery of the grip and inthis instance a recess 21 is provided in the end of the plug `5 into which the portion providing the recess 13 may beextended. It will be noted that the Q construction illustrated in Fig. 1 affords a 23 clearance between the inner surface of the main body portion 12 rand the endof the plug 5l into which the marginal section-9 maybe extended. In thearrangement shown in Fig. 3 no such clearance is provided and the marginal portion i 9 in thisinstance is4 effectively clamped throughout itsextent Vbetween Ythe body portion 12 and the end of the plug 5'. c y

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig.-4 the periphery ofy the cap 12 is formed in the ksame manner as the periphery of the cap Y12. -In this instance a boss 22 is formed at the medial portion=1of the end of theplug, 52.l

In order. to provide the recess 13 in this instance it is necessary that the body portion 12? be bent upwardly whereby the medial portion 24 of the main body portionV 12" is disposed in a plane above the periphery thereof.r The portion providing the recess 13f"in this instance is rested `on .the end of the boss 22. In this construction thefmarginalsection rests againstrthe end of Y.the cap 5 and about the V4boss 22jv and is effecvtively,clarnped in this position-by the adjacentv section ofthe bodyportion 12" of the cap.

.The embodiments of the invention illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 aresimilar to the embodiment -illustrated in Fig. 1 in all respects other than thosedescribed. y e

Fromthe foregoingy description it is manifest 'that I have provided an end cap for golf club understood `that these arevcapable of variation and modification ,and may be used for purposes .other than that described. I, therefore, do not wish -to be limited tothe precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes' :and alterations -as fall within the ambit of the following claims. f

In a grip for golf clubs and the like which has a handle having a conical opening in the end thereof, and a strap wound about the periphery thereof and including a portion extending beyond the end of the handle, the combination therewith of a cap adapted to be mounted on the end of the handle and including a medially located raised portion having a recessed part therein embodying a conical section adapted to be seated in said conical opening, securing means` including a clamping portion for forcing said conical section into clamping engagement withl said. conical opening to retain said cap on said hand1e, a portion of said strap extending beyond the end'of the handle being folded onto the end of saidhandle, said cap including 4a depending peripheral portion having a chamfered edge embracingsaid strap at the fold therein to clamp said strap against displacement, said cap having the outer edge thereof alined with the outer surface of the strap to provide a smooth end on the grip, and a plug seated in said recessed portion outwardly of said 4securing means.
