Description

Oct. 3, 1933. D. E. LEGGE MACHINE FOR HOLDINGPAPER Filed Nov. 25, 1932 FIG. 1

Affor'ney blocks.
' Patented Oct. 3, 1933 David E. Legge, Foxborough, Mass.
' Application Novcmber 25, 1932' w Serial No. s44,2o1
This invention relates to a machine for firmly holding paper, and particularly sheets of paper to which gummed cloth or other material. is to be attached at one edge to make it into pads or.
Heretofore the sheets of paperhave been held in permanent position by placing heavy weights on the top of the pile, which is quite commonly done today, although I am well aware'that there are machines which are intended'to hold paper; but which are not generally used because they are awkward and slow in operation.
One of my objects has been to provide a machine with mechanism that can be readily moved to operable position and quickly clamped down on the paper to be held regardless of the height of the stack of saidpaper.
Another object has been to so construct such a machine that it may serve as a truck on which to. carry the paper away.- Still another object hasbeen to make my machine so simple in construction and easy in operation that it is economical to build and maybe effectively used by a wholly unskilled person and one who is not strong enough to handle the heavy weights now commonly used.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construc- 30 tion, combination and operative arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawings; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my machine.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of my machine showing a quantity of paper firmly held in position.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the rear portion of my "machine showing the brackets fastened thereto, between which the holding board is kept.
' Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section illustrating in detail my clamping mechanism in operable position.
As illustrated my machine has a platform 1 for the supply of paper to rest upon, which platform is secured to a base 2. Said platform 1 and base 2 slant downwardly towards the rear as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. Said base 2 is equipped with one or more wheels 3 and fastened to said base are sides 4 which also serve as handles, thereby making it possible to wheel my which are slidably mounted on said guide rods 5,
to which arms 7 are connected clamp members 9 by parts later explained. Said clampmembers 9 areactuated by. levers 10 which, have a cam portion 11 at one end. An upright'standard'12, having a vertic'alslot 24 therein, forms part of said a clamp member 9 and. extends upwardly into the head portion 13 of arm 7, being movable in said ,arm. A pivot pin 20 passes through said cam portionll of lever '10, being 'eccentricallypositioned as shown in Figure 4, pivotally fastening it to said clamp member head portion 13.
In said slot 24 is a spring member 22 which seats on apin 23, which passes through said arm '7 and 'slot 24.
A supply of paper 16 ispla'ced on said platform 1 and a board14 placed on said paper. Said arms I '7 are slid down'on said rod 5 until they rest on said board 14. Said levers 10 are then pushed over rearwardly from their inoperable position which is illustrated by the lever 10 at the left in Figure 1 of the drawings. This rotates the cam portion 11 so that its larger part forces said standard .12 downwardly and clamp member 9 to thereby tightly hold the stack of paper 16 while gummed cloth or other material is applied to it. The downward movement of said standard 12 compresses said spring 22 on said pin 23, and upon the return of, said lever 10 to its original position by pushing it forwardly, the tension of this spring 22 forces said standard 12 and clamp member 9 upwardly, andall pressure on the board 14 and paper 16 is removed. The arms 7 may then be slid upwardly and swung to one side and a the board 14 removed and slid in between brackets 15 attached to the back 8. Said board 14 is 100 preferably used so the clamping action will be distributed over the supply of paper being held, and to protect it.
My machine may be grasped by said handles 4 and the paper moved around as on an ordinary truck.
What I claim is:
1. A paper holding machine comprising means to support a supply of paper, rod means attached to said first-mentioned means, an arm slidably mounted on said rod means, a clamping member embodyingv a standard movable in said arm, and a lever adapted to contact with said standard when actuated to thereby move said clamping member to clamping position.
2. A paper holding machine comprising means to support a supply of paper, rod means attached to said support means, clampinginstrumentalities embodying an arm fastened to said rod means, a lever eccentrically mounted on said arm, and a clamping member connected to said arm adapted to be actuated by said lever.
3. A paper holding machine comprising means to support a supply of paper, rod means attached to said support means, clamping :mechanism.
