(01. 24-110) My present invention has reference to a new and novel construction of cuif buttons of the come-apart type, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of a cuff button that comprises two cooperating sections, one carrying fixed jaws and the other carrying pivoted and spring influenced jaws to coengage with the fixed jaws when the sections are associated, together with spring influenced means for causing the rapid separation of the sections when pressure is exerted upon the tail ends of the pivoted jaws to bring the same out of engagement with the fixed jaws.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

The cuff button may be of any desired shape and may be constructed of any desired material, The button comprises two sections designed for cooperation, the said sections being formed with heads 1 and 2, respectively, and with shanks 3 and 4, respectively. The shanks are preferably of rectangular formation and each comprises two spaced plates. Between the plates comprising the shank 3 there are fixed or may be integrally formed the flat body portions 4 of the jaws 5. The outer faces of the fixed jaws are rounded and in the space provided between the body portions 4 of the jaws there is a helical expansion spring 6 that has one end fixed to the inner face of the head 1.
The plates comprising the shank on the head 2 have pivotally secured therebetween, as at 8, the body portions 9 of jaw members 10. The rear or tail ends of the body of the jaws pass through openings in the head 2 and the outer corners of these projecting portions are notched, as at 9'. Secured on the inner face of the head 2 there are the inner ends of arched springs 10, the said springs overlying the body portions 9 of the respective jaws l0 and forcing the jaws toward each other. The limit of the movement of the jaws toward each other is controlled by the contact of the jaw bodies with the outer walls pro-' vided by the openings 12' in the head 2. The jaws have their outer ends rounded or cut angularly, as at 13. Secured to the head and arranged centrally between the jaws there is an elongated and longitudinally extending pin or rod 14, and this rod is designed to be received in the space or passage afforded between the body portions 4 and the jaws 5 when the members 1 and 2 are forced toward each other. crating members will bring the jaws 10 into locking engagement with the fixed jaws 5, the angle or rounded ends of the said movable jaws riding first over the rounded outer edges of the jaws 5 and thereafter the springs 10 bring the straight inner edges of the jaws 10 against the straight inner edges of the jaws 5. To release the jaws the nails of two of the fingers of the operator are arranged in the notches 9 to swing the jaws 7 away from each other and immediately after the jaws 10 leave the jaws 5 the spring 6, which has been compressed by the rod or pin 14 will expand to force the head member 2 away from the head member 1 so that the sections comprising the button will be readily and automatically moved away from each other.
The shanks of the respective cooperating but ton sections are formed with or have secured to the sides thereof lugs or flanges 15, respectively. These lugs or flanges are in the nature of inner heads and are designed to engage with the inner surfaces of a cuff to prevent the accidental removal of the sections when the cuff is unbuttoned. It is believed that when the foregoing description has been read in connection with the accompanying drawing that the simplicity and advantages of my improvement will be understood and appreciated and that further detailed description will not be required.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A cuff button comprising two cooperating non-telescopic sections, fixed jaws on one of the sections, pivoted jaws on the secondsection,spring means influencing the jaws toward each other, stop means for limiting such swinging of the jaws and said pivoted jaws designed to coengage with the fixed jaws when the sections are associated.
2. A cuff button comprising two cooperating sections, each including a head and a shank, each of said shanks comprising two spaced elements, a pair of spaced jaws having body portions which are fixed between the shanks of one of the members, a pair of jaws having their body portions pivoted in the shank of the second member and their tail ends passing through openings in the head of said member, arched springs fixed on the inner face of said head and contacting with the outer edges of the pivoted jaws for swinging the jaws toward each other and said jaws being limited in such swinging by the contact of the tail ends thereof with the walls provided by the openings in the head and said pivoted jaws designed for engagement with the fixed jaws when the sections are moved toward each other.

A cuff button comprising two cooperating sections, each including a head and a shank, each of said shanks comprising two spaced elements, a pair of spaced jaws having body portions which are fixed between the shanks of one of the members, a pair of jaws having their body portions pivoted in the shank of the second member and their tail ends passing through openings in the head of said member, arched springs fixed on the inner face of said head and contacting with the outer edges of the pivoted jaws for swinging the jaws toward each other and said jaws being limited in such swinging by the contact of the tail ends thereof with the walls provided by the openings in the head, a pin fixed to the head and extending through and beyond the shank thereof, a coiled expansion spring fixed to the head of the first-named section and arranged in the space between the body of the jaws thereof, and said'pin designed to be received in said space to contact and compress the spring when the jaw sections are moved together to bring the pivoted jaws into engagement with the fixed jaws.
4. A device according to claim 2 in which the shanks of the jaws have their outer faces formed with lug extensions.
