It is one of the principal aims or objects of this present invention to create or construct a bed rail construction which maybe quickly fastened to the head and the foot of'the bed in an extreme- 1y rigid manner thereby giving a bed frame which will not sway or .be distorted by any weight or shown in Fig. 5. Another object of my invention is to provide means whereby the several connections may be easily and expediently tightened whenever such is necessary, thus giving a properly alined article of furniture during its entire life.

Referring particularly to Fig. 1, 10 designates the head post of a bed of any desired type and 11 the foot post associated therewith. As clearly shown in Fig. 1 the dowels 15 extend into the respective head and foot posts and. maintain the bed rail against movement in a vertical direction.

A round tension rod 20 is provided with a hook portion 21 and'this rod seats in the groove 14 in the bed rail 12. The hook 21 extends around a round pin 22, which is rigid with the foot post11 and thus a universal connection is had therebetween thus permitting a perfect fitting connecthe foot post, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

The other end ofthe tension rod 20 extends through the head posts lO and is threaded as indicated at 23, A'cylindrical cup-shaped nut 24 engages with the threaded portion 23 of the rod 20 and revolubly seats in a recess 25 in the head post. r

The nut 24has a depending bail 26 pivotally 1 connected thereto as clearly shown in Fig. 2 and. this handle or bail member serves as a means to operate or rotate the nut 24 thu's'advancing the same along the threaded portion of the rod 201 and placing the bed rail proper under compressive stress. Referring now to Figs. 1 and 5, designates wooden blocks which are fastened in spaced relationship in the grooves 13 of the bed rail 12. These blocks 30 are so spaced as to permit the ends of the slats (not shown) to be placed therein and after the slats are once in position they cannot be removed by any accidental movement or tipping of the bed proper.

The utility of my invention will be readily perceived. The tension rod holds the head of the bed tightly toward the foot thereof upon the tighteningof the nut 24 and the bed rail resists movement by being placed under compression and hence an extremely rigid and durable bed construction will be had. Should the several members become loose or wobbly at any time it is only necessary to grasp the bail or handle 26 and rotate the nut 24 so that the rod 20 will be placed under the proper tension. 7

As will be appreciated, my invention is applicable for use in many locations, one, for example, being table constructions wherein the legs maybe efficiently held and braced by my novel tensioning and reinforcing device;

Having thus described my invention I desire it to be understood that the invention is in nowise limited to the, particular illustrative embodiment disclosed, the scope thereof being set forth in the following claims.
