Description
H WAKEMAN. SEATS AND BACKS m CHAIRS.
No. 192,203 Patented Ju1'1e19,1877.
: ji m f UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
HARWOOD WAKEMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEATS AND BACKS FOR CHAI RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,203, dated June 19, 1877 application filed March 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARWoonWAKnMAN, ofthe city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Seats and Backs for Chairs, Oar-Seats, 8m, of which the following is a specification:
Chairs have been made with backs that are upholstered on one side, and provided with perforated wood or cane at the other side, and these have been reversible so that either side can be made use of, and the seat itself has also been made so that it can be turned over. In a patent granted to me March 13, 1877, a chair back and seat of this character are set forth. v
My present invention relates to a back or seat for'chairs, railway-seats, lounges, &c., in which the cane or open work is in one frame and the upholstered work is in another frame, and the two are mounted in the back or seat in such a, manner that either one can be brought to position for use, therebyallowing for a'cool ventilated seat or back for summer use, or an upholstered andwarm back or seat for winter use.
In the drawing, Figure l is a vertical sec tion of the chair. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectionof the back, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the seat.
The chair-back is made of the upiight side pieces at, having grooves b b in the opposite faces. These grooves are preferably in the arc of a circle, so that the backs may be curved. There are two frames, d 6, adapted to he slid into the grooves in the frame a, so that either framecan be outward toward the person; and the frame dis made with cane or open work material, so as to form a cool seat, and the frame a is upholstered to adapt the seat to cool or winter weather. The seat-frame f is made with grooves, into which are slid the frames 9 and h, the frame 9 containing cane or open work, and the frame It being upholstered, and either one can be placed upward, according to the weather or the convenience of the occupant of the chair.
In place of these frames being fitted to slide in grooves, they may be hinged, and swing one in front of the other, or they may be provided with dowels, or catches,
or clamps. In all cases the seat-frame and the back-frame are provided with frames that contain the open work, and which are separate from the upholstered surface; and these frames are movable, in relation to the back or seat, so thateither surface can be placed in the position for use and the other surface put out of use.
There may be a movable covering-piece, Z, at the upper edges of the back-frames, do as to close the opening between said frames and form an ornament, and a layer of cloth or paper, 01' other suitable material, may be placed in front of or upon the upholstered back or seat to prevent dust passing to the same when the cane or perforated seat or back is over the same.
I claim as my invention A seat having its back or bottom adapted to receive two frames, one containing cane or open work, and the other upholstered and made changeable, so that either frame and surface can be positioned for use. substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 20th day of March, A. D. 1877.
