(Cl. 189-46) This invention relates to a car door construction and concerns itself with means for sealing the perimeter of the door against the weather when the same is in closed position and in which a portion of the sealing means serves as a latch invention, and illustrating adjacent parts of the car.

As illustrative of thisinvention, there is shown a house car door 1 having a Z-bar 2 extending along the upper margin. The web of the Z-bar is attached to the door with one flange 3 (Fig. 2), extending inwardly over the top thereof, and the other flange 4 extending outwardly. A pair of rollers 5 are mounted upon suitable journals 6 supported by the Z-bar 2, the outer flange of which is coped or cut out to allow the rollers to extend therethrough asvshown in Figure 2.
The rollers 5 are adapted for traveling upon a track '7 formed upon a plate or housing 8 which encloses the rollers and which is attached to the side plate 9 of the car. It will be noted that the side plate 9 is in the form of a Z-bar having a depending flange 9a which cooperates with the flange 3 on the Z-bar 2 for excluding the weather. Further, as the rollers 5 fit quite closely in the copes of the flange 4 of the Z-bar 2, the weather is also excluded by the flange 4 of the Z-bar 2, so that adouble seal against the weather is obtained. The aforementioned track 7 is provided with a pair of depressions 10 to receive the rollers when the door is in closed position. These depressions slope inwardly toward the car as shown in Figure 2, so that there will be a tendency to move the door inwardly when the rollers drop into the depressions 10.
Upon the side sill of the car, there are secured angle clips 11 to which a weather strip 12 in the form of an angle is secured. This angle has one flange secured to the outstanding flange of the angle 11, while the other flange is directed upwardly and is deformed to provide an upwardly and outwardly sloping surface 13.
Along the lower margin of the door, there is secured a longitudinally extending member or plate 14 having an inwardly offset sloping portion 15, the outer surface of which slopes downwardly and inwardly for cooperating with the sloping surface 13 on the angle member 12. With this construction, it will be obvious that when the door is closed and the rollers drop in the depressions 10, the door will drop downwardly a distance equal to the depth of the depressions, with the result that the sloping surfaces on the members 12 and 14 will force the door inwardly as the member 14 slides downwardly past the member 12. It will be obvious that the contacting members 12 and 14 will exclude the weather. Further, a threshold plate 16 is attached to the floor of the car and extends downwardly over the edge thereof, and is attached to the side sill as indicated at 1'7. When the door is tightly closed it will press against the threshold plate and also tend to exclude the weather. Accordingly, the top and the bottom of the door are protected by a double seal.
Upon the rear door post 18 (Fig. 3), there is a vertically extending weather strip 19 which is in the form of an angle having one flange attached to the post 18 and the other flange directed rearwardly and deformed to provide a sloping surface 20. Upon the rear inner edge of the door, there is a vertical weather strip 21 having a sloping surface in engagement with the sloping surface 20. These sloping surfaces are so directed that they draw the door inwardly when the door is closed and the same are brought into sliding engagement.
Upon the front margin of the door, there is secured a vertical weather strip 22 (Fig. 4) which is in the form of an angle bar having its outstanding flange rearwardly bent as indicated at 23. Upon the front door post 24, there is secured a vertical angle bar 25 having an outstanding flange against which the weather angle 22 is designed to abut to exclude the weather.
This plate 27 is provided with a vertically extending groove 27a for receiving the outer edge of the weather strip 22 and beyond this groove, said weather plate 27 is inwardly directed in the form of a bend 27b beyond the outer edge of the weather strip 22 to provide a shoulder or abutment in front of the outstanding flange of such weather strip 22 whereby the door is locked or latched against sliding movement when the locking weather strip 2'7 is in its operative position. Should the sealing and locking plate be in operative position when the door is open, it will not prevent the closing of the door since the weather angle 22 on the door will swing the plate 27 outwardly when it comes in contact therewith due to the contours of the two parts.
Means are provided for locking the sealing plate 27 in its operative position and in the form shown, this means consists of a latch lever 29 which is pivoted intermediate its ends to a bracket 30 attached to and extending from the side of the car. When the latch lever is swung into horizontal position as shown, its forward end 29a will engage over the sealing plate 27 and prevent the same from swinging on its hinges. In order to maintain the latch lever 29 in its operative position; a latch hook 31 is pivoted between a pair of ears 32 on the bracket and is adapted to swing downwardly so that its hooked portion will engage under the lever. The bracket 30 is provided with a lug 33 (Fig.4). The lug 33 and latch hook 31 have registering apertures 34 for receiving a sealing ribbon when the latch hook is in its operative po-' sition whereby the door may be sealed. The latch hook 31 is adapted to swing upwardly torelease the latch lever 29 so that the same may be swung into dotted line position as shown in Figure 5, and allow the sealing plate 27 to swing outwardly to release the door.
It should be noted that the door is entirely devoid of fixtures except the rollers, and for this reason it is possible to widen the car and still maintain the proper tunnel clearances. At the sametime, the perimeter of the door is effectively sealed from the' weather when the door is closed. It will also be appreciated that by housing the rollers, as herein set forth, it will be impossible for matter to accumulate upon the track and block the sliding movements of the door. The novel feature of the sealing plate 27 that engages the front edge weather strip on the door avoids the use of 1 extra locking latches for securing the door and so performs a two-fold function.
We are aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and we therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
We claim as our invention:
1. In a house car having a door-opening, a door for closing said opening, means for supporting said door for horizontal sliding and vertical movement, and cooperating sealing means for the door adapted for coming into cooperative sealing relation thru such horizontal sliding and vertical movement.
2. In a house car having a door opening, with a track adjacent one margin oflsaid opening, said track having deformed portions, 9. door for closing said opening, rollers on said door for travclosed position for causing relative vertical movement between said door and car, and cooperating means on said door and car for sealing a margin of said door and moving the same inwardly thru such relative vertical movement.
4. In a house car having a side plate, a plate member secured to said side plate and having a depending housing portion and an inturned track portion, and a door having rollers traveling upon said track, said door having a flange cooperating with and extending toward said side plate to ex-&
clude the weather and having a flange cooperating with and extending toward the depending portion of said plate member to exclude the weather.
5. In a house car having a side plate, a plate I member secured to said side plate and having a depending portion and an inwardly directed track portion, a door having rollers traveling upon said track portion, and oppositely directed means on said door cooperating with saidside plate and plate member to exclude the weather.
6. In a house car having a door opening provided with a threshold plate, a track having deformed portions adjacent the upper margin of the opening, a door having rollers supported upon said track, a guiding weather strip upon the lower portion of the car, a guiding weather strip upon the lower margin of the door and slidably extending in contacting'relation with the first mentioned strips, said strips having sloping surfaces for forcing the door against said threshold plate when said rollers engage the deformed portions on said track.
7. In a house car having a doorway, a track having spaced inwardly sloping depressions adjacent the upper margin of said doorway, a door having rollers traveling upon said track and engageable in said depressions when the door is closed, and cooperating sloping weather-proofing and guiding strips upon the lower margin of the car and door for forcing the door inwardly when said rollers engage said depressions.
8. In a house car having a doorway, a track having deformed portions adjacent one margin of the doorway, a door having rollers traveling upon said track and engageable with said de-' formed portion for causing relative vertical movement between said car and door, and means responsive to the movements of the door for forcing the same inwardly and sealing the same.
9. In a house car having a door opening with a'track adjacent one margin. of said opening, a door supported upon said track for sliding movement, a vertical strip on the front edge of said door and having an outwardly extending portion, a plate member hinged to the car and having a grooved portion for receiving said outwardly extending portion and means for locking said plate in cooperative relation with said strip.
10. In a house car having a doorway, a track having downwardly and inwardly sloping roller depressions, a door having rollers traveling upon said track and engageable with said depressions and downward movement, and cooperating sealing members respectively mounted upon said car and door and adapted for coming into cooperative relation upon such downward and inward movement of the doors.
11. In a house car having a sliding door, a
weather strip upon the front margin of said door, said weather strip having an outwardly directedflange, a vertical sealing member hinged to the car and swingable over saidweather strip, said sealing member having a vertical groove for receiving said flange and means for securing said sealing member in its operative position.
12. In a house car having a sliding door, a vertical weather strip having an outwardly and rearwardly directed flange secured to the front-margin of the door, a sealing member hinged to the car, said sealing member having a groove for receiving said flange and a deformed portion beyond said groove, said outwardly directed flange being adapted for striking said deformed portion and swinging said sealing member outwardly when the later is positioned in the path of said door.
13. In a house car having a sliding door, a vertical weather strip upon the front edge of the door, a sealing member hinged to said car and adapted for swinging movements in the path of said weather strip, said weather strip having a sloping portion adapted for engaging and swinging said sealing member outwardly when said door is closed.
14. In a house car having a sliding door, a
weather member upon the front margin of the abutment upon the car adapted to be engaged by said flange when the door is closed, a sealing member hinged to the car and swingable over said flange, said sealing member having a groove when the door is closed, said weather strip and sealing member having interengaging parts for preventing relative longitudinal movement thereof and means for latching said member to said car.
17. In a house car having a door opening with a sliding door for closing said opening, an abutment upon the car at the forward end of said opening, an angle member constituting the forward edge of said door and adapted for engaging said abutment when the door is closed and a sealing member hinged to the car beyond said abutment and swingable over the front margin of said door for sealing the juncture of said abutment and angle member when the door is closed, and means for latching said sealing member to said car.
18. In a house car having a door opening, an abutment upon the car at the forward end of said opening, a sliding door for closing said opening, the forward edge of said door abutting said abutment when the door is closed, a sealing member hinged to the car beyond said abutment and adapted for swinging movements over said abutment and over the front margin of said car for sealing the juncture of said abutment and the forward edge of said door when the same is closed and means for latching said sealing member to said-car.
