' A. W. WATRISS.
PAPER-FOLDER Am CUTTER.
N0. IQZJOZ. Patented June 19, 1877.
WITNE SE5 INVENTEI UNITED STATES A. WHITING WATRISS, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER FOLDER AND CUTTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,102, dated June 19, 1877; application filed To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. A. WHITING WATRISS, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an improvement in Paper Folder and Gutter, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in a paper-file made from a flat plate of metal, preferably tin, of a square or rectangular shape, provided with one or more holes at about one-third the entire distance from one edge, and folded at right angles to the breadth of the plate on a line passing through the holes, so that the back portion shall be about an inch wider than the front.
In the drawing, the plate A, of suitable dimensions, is folded so that the turned-over portion B shall be in depth of. the Width of the paper to be folded, and the holes or niches 0 occur along theline of the fold. These holes are preferably out before the leaf or front is folded, but they may be cut afterward, and may also be of any desired shape.
The paper to be folded is inserted between the leaf B and the back A to the depth of the leaf, and the holes 0 permit the user to see that the edge of the paper abuts against the bottom on the line of the fold, whichacts asa gage, and that the edge of the paper is coin- May 17, 1877.
cident with the upper edge of the leaf before the paper is folded. The projecting portion of the paper is then folded over upon the front of the leaf, and acrease is determined along the edge of the leaf.
This process of folding may be continued until the unfolded portion of the paper is less in width than the width of the leaf.
If a broader fold is desired, the upper edge of the back A may be used in determining the width of the fold, in the manner described. The holes may also be utilized in removing the paper from the file by lifting it upward from between the back A and leaf or front B, so that it maybe readily removed after the fold has been made. back A may also serve as a paper-cutter.
Having thus fully described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a combined paper folder and cutter, consisting of a folded plate, having the back A, the front B, and one or more holes, 0, upon the line of the fold, substantially as described.
