A single lug 23 is carried by the enlarged outer end portion'22 and the lug extends laterally or radially with respect to the part-and is formed by pressing out a portionof the material of the part as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6 although itwill be apparent that the lug might be a separate piece secured in' place in any suitable manner.

At its inner 'end part 18 includes an annular flange 2'7 and inwardly of saidfflange there is forcing the wall 25 inwardly of thepart and the the flange is of a doublethick- Itwill be appreciated that thin flange is therefore formed by foldingof the metal upon itself so that fness' of'material. Attention is directed to the fact that the inner peripheral, surface 129 of: the flange is inclined or'tapered, the arrangement being such spaced relation to said notch 30 a recess 31 is formed in theflange this recess beingin the form of a depression in or an opening through the inner layer-of the material forming the flange.
It is preferred that both the parts 17 and 18 be formed of sheet brass or other resilient material I and this is particularly true of the part -18 and the constructing of this part of such material provides a flange 27 which is somewhat yielding or resilient. The diameter of the free or entrance end of'the flange 27 is such with respect to the outer end portion 22 of part1? that said end portion may be forced into the flange by, slightly springing the flange. This assembly may be accomplished by disposing the flange partly overthe outer end portion22 of the part 17 or by partially inserting said end portion in the flange atone side as shownin Fig. '7. The parts should be so positioned that lug 23 and notch 30 are in align- .ment and then on pressure being applied the flange is sprung or forced over the head-like portion 22 so that the relative positions of the parts,
are as shown in Fig. 8. Next, the parts are turned relatively, whereby the notch 30 is carried away from the "lug 23 30 or whereby'saidlug is carried away from the notch, and as, the lug engages the inner surface of the flange there is a cam-like action tending to draw the parts slightly into eccentric relationship whereby the inclined surface'2lof part 17 is forced into tight and overlapping relationship with the inner. inclinedsurface 29 of the flange.
This engagement takes, place particularly at a point opposite the lug 23 as is best shown in Fig. 9. The parts maybe turned rel-' atively until the lug 23 snaps into the recess 31 when the parts will be locked together. Owing to the fact that the inclined surfaces 21 and 29 of the respective parts are forced into tight engagement by the camming action above referred to, the parts will be rigidly connected and the eraser receiving part 18 will not wobble; Further, owing to the fact that the parts have been shifted into aneccentric relationship with the inclined surface of one overlapping. the inclined surface of the other, the parts are securely locked together so that they cannot be pulled apart.
' The-wall 28 may be formed with a slight bow or is formed slightly concavo-convex with the convex surface on the under or outer side; Therefore, when 'theparts are telescoped as shown in Figs. 8 and 9 the wall 28 is slightly sprung upwardlyby the pressing of the parts together. 'While the wall .is thus sprung, the parts are turned relatively and then on the pressure being released the wall tends to returnto normal condition due to its resiliency or spring action, and the parts having been moved into the slightly eccentric relation above mentioned, theoverlapping inclined surfaces further tightly engage as the wall 28 attempts to force the part 17 outof 'the flange. This spring action of the wall'also assists somewhat in maintaining the lug 23 in the recess 31. V r
With the present arrangement it will be noted that but one lug 23 is needed andin manufacture it is cheaper and easier to provide a pencil receiving part or part 17 with one such lug than it is to provide it with two lugs. This part is substantially permanently attached to the pencil and when the part 18 is assembled on the part 17 there is no free relative movement of the parts; and the spring action above referred to. Should the eraser 25 wear down so as to be no longer useful, part 18 may be easily removed by shifting it to bring the notch 30 in alignment with the lug 23 and a new part 18 equipped new eraser may be easily applied. s
r In Fig. 10 is shown a slight modification in which the. end wall of the cap may be bowedor concavo-convex "as indicated at 32 to have the same spring eife'ct as the wall 28 in the eraser receiving member 18. v Having thus setforththe nature of my invention, what I claim is.
1. An article of manufacture including a two part ferrule comprising a pencil receiving part ing part having an annular flange at itsinner end, said pencil receiving'part, including a portion to telescope with said flange, and means whereby on relative rotation of said parts after they havebeen telescoped a surface of one is wedged against a, complementary surface of the 100 other and the parts are rigidly connected.
