A first object of the invention is to produce a machine which will accomplish the complete iinishing of f elt and straw hats automatically, including both crowns and brims. These two opera'tions have never been performed successfully on one machine prior to creation of this design, since heretofore lall brims have been finished manually by both hatmanufacturers and renovators. Another object is' to provide a machine of few parts, strong and durable which will meet every requirement of the operator. One that is simple in construction and carefully balanced so that the load onthe motor will be at a minimum. Y
A further object is to furnish a device fitted for interchangeable tools or applicators for singeing-sanding brushing rolling sponging luhring and ironing to provide finishes for different types of hats.
Another object of my invention is to put forth a device mechanically fool-proof and one that can be disengaged instantly from the propelling element, that can be adjusted easily and quickly in varying the extent of movement and amount of pressure applied `and all with a minimum of exertion.
Another object of the designis yto create a simple mechanism which may be propelled by any power means and proper direct connected gear or belt and pulley reduction in the correct relation for the applicator to travel much slower than the hat block or brim flange.
Other advantages of this invention will be more fully understood from the following clear and concise description considered in relation to the drawing in which similar numbers are used in the several views.
Figure 1 is a front view of my device shown mounted on a bench board with the iron up on the hat crown in ironing position.
Figure 2 is a right side view of Figure 1 with the iron down on the hat brim.
Figure 3 is a top view or plan of Figure 2.
In the detailed construction illustrated, the machine is attached to a supporting table or bench top 4 through which a revolving vertical spindle shaft 5 extends and on which is mounted adjustably either a hat crown block 6 or a flange stand 7 and brim block 8 according to which operation is to be applied to a hat. An adjustably mounted spring is shown atv 27 for Vvarying the desired pressure 85 to be exerted by applicatormember 25 and valso to hold arm 23 back out of interference when not in use. This object is `accomplished when spring 27 moves past center of hinge joint.
On the opposite end of walking beam 20 oppo- 90 site portion 2l and approximately equally distant from the bearing point 19 is a slotted section 28 into which is connected and adjustably secured by a suitablel clamp and handle a connecting rod 29 which joins beam 12 at bearing 14 Cne means is provided for limiting the downward travel ofthe iron v25 and also to hold the iron mechanism back outr of motion while hat alone may revolve. This is shown at 30 Awhich is a hand wheel or knob that can be easily pulled forward to compress the spring 31 which disengages tooth clutch member 32 from stationary clutch member 33 thereby allowing arm 34 on wheel shaft 35 to be turned into contact with lever beam 20 which will lock at such point as desiredby reengagement of the clutch by release of spring 31. block is fitted to a hat and both are locked on the spindle shaft 5. The applicator selected by operator to be employed rst is then inserted and fastened into arm 23 which is brought into position against hat surface and proper pressure adjusted through spring 27. Rod 29 is run up into upper end of slot 28 and tightened there. The hand wheel 3G is pulled and turned to move arm 3e and. thereby nx limit of stroke against hat crown above line of brim or ribbon as desired. A rswitch controlling the motor which operates shafts 5 and-9 is then closed and the hat finishing process is started. The handle on end of arm 23 .facilitates the ymovement of said arm and applicator away from the hat through hinge 24 and spring 27 which holds same at rest whiie applicators are' being changed. An electric ironin0` applicator 25 with temperature control switch can be usedA without danger of scorching the hat since the cam member 10 is so designed that movement is speeded up over crown and slowed down over curved part and sides to avoid streaks or spiral markings on hat.
When the crown is completed, the hat block is removed and iiange stand 7 and brim ange 8 replaces same.l A luhring cloth is tightly drawn over hat brim and fastened securely. Rod 29 is moved to other end of 'slot 28 which limits applicator movement between points C andD. The counter-Weight 15 operates at all times to hold pulley ll on cam l0 since at top of stroke on dead center with bearing i9, the weight 15 is farthest from fulcrumA point and near a hori- Zontal position. When the applicator arm 23` is thrown back to idle position at points A and C and held there Vby arm 34 and clutch members 32 and 33, the
weight 15 does not act and cam 10 revolves without contact with pulley l1 until arm 34 is again lowered. This feature permits the operation and use of spindle shaft 5 when applicator mechanism is idle.
I am aware that the construction shown for illustration purposes may be modied in certain Y particulars to simplify manufacture Without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention; therefore, I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described but What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a hat nishing machine, an ironing tool adapted to iron both the crown andthe brim of ahat, a Walking beam carrying a swinging ironingtool and a spring for drawing said swinging ironing tool toward-the vhat, means for actuating said walking beam including al lever anda cam for vactuating ,the same, a link connecting said lever and thewalking beam, the means connecting said link with the walking beam being adjustable whereby the stroke oi the ironV can be varied to iron either the crown or the brim.
2. In avhat nishing machine, an ironingtool adapted Yto iron both the crown. and brim Vof a hat, a walking beam carrying a swinging ironing tool on one arm thereovmeans for actuating said hat,v a walking beam carrying said ironing tool onA one arm thereof, Vmeans lfor actuating said walking beam including a lever, a cam for actuating the same, a link connectingsaid last named lever and the other armof the walking beam, the
last named connecting means being adjustable whereby the stroke of the iron can be varied to iron either the crown or the brim.
4'. In a hat finishing machine, an ironing tool adapted to iron both the crown and the brim of the hat, a walking beam having an iron carrying arm hingedly connected to an arm ofY said walking beam, said iron carrying arm to swing at right angles to the plane of movement of the walking beam, said iron hinged to rock on said last named arm, means for actuating said walking beam including a lever, a link adjustably connecting said lever and the walking beam to vary the length of stroke ofthe iron, and a cam for actuating said lever.
