Description
S. C. KLING CIGAR BOX HINGE Aug. 1, 1933 Filed July 22, 1932 Samuel/(1K 3mm 3 primarily for Patented" Aug. 1, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Samuel C. Kling, of York, Pa. Application July 22, 1932. Serial No. 624,082
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to hinges designed use on cigar boxes or the like, the primary object of the invention being to provide a hinge of this character which may be readily and easily secured in position, so that the cigar box may be lifted or handled by the lid, without danger of the lid being broken from the box under the weight of its contents.
An important object of theinvention is the provision of a hinge of this be readily and easily applied by the laborers, or unskilled mechanics, by merely opening the hinge and striking the hinge with a ding the spurs of the hinge in the box and' lid.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hinge constructed in such a way that one;
section of the hinge may slide with respect to the other section thereof, to the end that the lid may fit over the usual flange rising from the box, insuring a, close fit between the lid and box.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear rangement of parts and in the details of constru'ction. hereinafter described and claimed, it
being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure l is an elevational view of a cigar box supplied with a hinge constructed in accordance with the invention, the box being shown in its closed position.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof, the lid being shown in its open position.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4. is an view illustrating hinge sections. V
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of a modified form of hinge.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6 6 of Figure 5.
Figure '7 is a side elevational view of a further modified form of hinge.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the body portion of a cigar box, and the reference character 6 designates the lid thereof.
The cigar box is formed with an upstanding flange '7 over which the lid fits, insuring an air tight fit between the body portion and lid enlarged fragmental sectional the manner of connecting the character which may as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and ar-- in Figure 5, however in of the box, so that the contents of the box will remain fresh.
The hinge forming the essence of this invention, is especially adapted for use in connection with cigar boxes of the type shown, and comprises a box section 8 and a lid section 9 which are stamped from lengths of sheet metal material. }Ihese sections are provided with prongs 10, which are also formed during the stamping operation, the prongs being so arranged that they will embed themselves in the cigar box, sealingthe hinge in position.
The box section of the hinge is provided with an upwardly and laterally extended end portion 10, formed with an elongated opening 11, the opening having an offset portion 12 at its lower end.
The lid section 9 of the hinge is formed with a right angled end portion 13 which is formed with a headedextension 14 that moves through 7.5 the elongated opening 12 pivotally and slidably connecting the lid section and box section of the hinge.
Due to this construction, it will be seen that the lid of the box will be permitted to move downwardly over the flange '7, the extension 14 moving into the offset portion 12, securing the lid section in position.
In the modified form of the invention as shown by figure 5 of the drawing, the box section 15 of 5 the hinge has a rearwardly and upwardly extended portion 16 formed with an elongated opening 1'? in which the rivet 18 is positioned, the rivet 19 being carried by the offset portion 19 of the lid section 20 of the hinge. Q
The hinge in this form of the invention is also provided with laterally extended prongs 21 that are embedded in the box, securing the hinge in position;
As shown by Figure '7 of the drawing, the sec tions 22 and 23 of the hinge are connected in the same manner as the sections of the hinge shown this form of the invention the hinge sections are secured to the box by means of the nails 24., 1
From the foregoing it will be seen that a hinge such as shown and described, may be readily and easily positioned by merely placing the hinge sections on the box, and striking the hinge sections with a hammer, forcing the prongs into the box, in a manner as shown by Figure 3 of the drawing.
The hinge is exceptionally strong and durable, and will permit the handling of the cigar box with its contents, by the lid, eliminating any pos- 110 7 end ,ing an elongated slot wardly and rearwardly inclined end portion havsaid hinge adapted to hold formed therein, the lower; a
end of the slot being ofiset, a lid section, one end of the lid section extending at right angles, a. headed extension secured to the right angled portion and slidable in the elongated slot, and one edge of the lid into engagement with the flange of the box, whereby'the lid is supported at an oblique angle with respect to the box, providing a support by means of which the box may be lifted.
