CHARLES F. PRENTIGE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FOLDING BOATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,007, dated June 12, 1877 application filed May 25, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Gus. FREDK. PRENTIOE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Boats, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l and Fig. 2 are, respectively, a view and plan of the iolding-frameof a boat, Fig. 3 being an enlarged vertical transverse section through line a, a.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved device by which a boat may be rendered portable, the same consisting of a frame,
admitting of compression and extension, and to be covered with canvas or other waterproof material, without requiring the preparatory displacement of the latter. The continuously-curvedribs, constituting the frame, are jointed at their termini V, and at their tangential proximities X, those constituting the bows beingjointed at common centers Y, and
the entire frame, so constructed, being kept distended by the vertically-folding foot-braces L and side braces I, in the manner indicated in the accompanying drawing.
The seats may be attached to the jointed longitudinal braces I, to serve as braces to prevent lateral strain of the boat. a To render the boat portable, pull foot and side braces upward at their respective joints, and apply pressure to each end of the frame; the canvas or other Water-proof material, being fastened at V, Y, and Z, as also at L, will travel with the ribs, as in the ordinary carriage-hood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. In an extensible portable boat, the ribs jointed at their termini and at their tangential points, and provided with jointed longitudinal braces I and vertically-folding foot-braces L, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
- 2. The ribs of an extensible portable boat, constructed substantially as described, arranged in planes with the cross-section of the boat, and at angles other than right angles to the. keel-line when extended.
