H. D BUYS METAL SHEARS July 25, 1933.
Filed Oct. 20. 1931 sheet metal such as Patented July 25, 19 33 h HENRY 1)., BUYS, or mvrMErrnInAno METAL srrnans Application filed (tater, 20, 1921, Serial No. 570,003. r
p This invention relates to metal cutting tools or implements, and more particularly to a shears for cutting bar iron of either round or angular configuration, springs, and galvanized iron and tin. i
An object of this invention is to provide a tool for general blacksmithing, garages, automobile spring works, tin shops or the like which will save a considerable amount of time incutting of metal, such as plow points, spring harrow teeth, or the like, and which is quick in action on either hot orcold metal and thereby eliminates the usual helper while performing the work in a man ner so that no ragged edges will be left.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a device of this kind means which maybe mounted on an anvil, bench or the like, bywhich the movable blade or cutter may be readily swung into open position without manually touching the blade.
A further object of this invention is to provide a cutter or shears of this kind which is so constructed that it will stay in desired position either open or closed, so that the article to" be cut may be held in one hand and the lever or sledge operated with the other hand, so as to cut the article at the O desired point.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 vis a detail side elevation partly .s in section of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention, showing in dotted line the open position and in full line the closed position of the device;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device partly in section, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-8 of Figure 1. 7
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the
numerallO designates generally a stationary blade of a cutter or shears constructed accordingto the preferredembodiment of this invention which has a straight cutting edge 11 on the upper edgethereof, and the numeral 12 designates a pivotedor movable lade which is pivotally. mounted on the stationary blade adjacentone edge thereof by means of a pivotal member 14; in the form of a bolt or the like which extends through the stationary bladelO and the Inov+ able blade12. Y
. The upperkeen edge 11 of the stationary blade 10 is provided with a curved cutting portion 13 intermediate the ends thereof and in likeinanner, the keen edge 15 of the movable blade ,12 ,is provided with a comple mentary curved cutting portion 16 which is disposed oppositely from the cutting por- 1 tion 13 so that a round article in the form of a bar or the like may be readily inserted within the curved cutting portion 13 and the bar cut olf by engagement of the cutting portion 16 with the bar. These curved cutting portions prevent sliding movement of the bar with respect to the two blades as the movable blade 12 is moved toward the fixed blade 10. The movable blade 12 has an upwardly extending handle or releasing member 17 formed therewith and disposed at one end of the blade 12, this handle 17 being preferably disposed adjacent the pivoted end of this blade. The bolt 14 is preferably'elongated and a spring 18 isdisposed 7 thereabout and held resiliently against the outer face of the movable blade 12 by means of a tensioning nut 19 so that the movable blade 12 will be resiliently held into engagement with the fixed blade 10. The movable blade 12 is provided with an outstanding pin or stud 20 adjacent the free end thereof, which pin 20 is adapted to be engaged by a manually operated lever, generally designated as 21. This lever 21 (T has an enlarged inner end portion 22 provided with an opening or aperture 23 therethrough within which the bolt 14, together with the nut 19 and the spring 18 is adapted to bedisposed and intermediate the ends of this lever 21, there is also provided a second i enlarged portion 24 having an aperture 25 therethrough within which the stud or pin 20 is removably disposed so that the pivot 14 will not only act as a fulcrum for the movable blade 12, but also as a fulcrum for the operating handle or lever 21.
In order to support the shears comprising the fixed blade 10 and the movable blade 12 in the desired position, I have provided a shank or stud 26 which has a plate 27 formed with the upper end thereof, which plate 27 is secured to the fixed blade 10 by means of bolts or rivets 28 or the like. This shank 26 is adapted to be positioned in the hardy hole of an anvil or the like, and is of a configuration to removably engage in this hardy hole or any other desired aperture of a'supporting member. In order to properly support or mount the shears on a bench orthe like, a socket member 29 having an upper flange 80 may be mounted in the desired opening in the bench or other support and the opening or passage 31 in the socket 29 of a size to removably receive the shank 26.
In the operation of this device, the shank '26 may be mounted in a hardy hole of an anvil or in the socket 29, which is mounted in a hole in a bench or the like, and the movable blade 12 swung upwardly either by forcing the handle 17 downwardly or by taking the lever 21 and mounting this lever 21 on the pivot 14 so that it will engage the pin 2O. The desired article may then be disposed between the two cutting blades and the upper edge of the movable blade 12 struck with a hammer or sledge provided the article is'of a relatively heavy nature so that the movable blade 12 cannot'be readily closed by operating the lever 21.
lVhen the article has been cut off, the movable blade may again be opened by striking the handle 17 with the hammeror and rocked downwardly so as to close the blades. A
It will be obvious, from the foregoing, that the shears or cutter herein disclosed may be readily operated to cut articles which are heated toia relatively high degree such as vehicle springs, bars, plates or the like, and that if the article is not of a relatively small nature, the shears may be readily operated without touching the movable blade with the hand. I
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction "and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the followingclaim.
I claim A metal shears of the character described comprising a pair of blade members, means for *pivota'lly and 'yieldably securing said blade members together,-a shank, means for securing said shank to 'oneof said blades intermediate the ends thereof, an -outstanding pincarried by the other of said "blades, and'a handle looselyand removably engaging said pivot meansand said pin whereby to rock said other-blade onsaid pivot means,
said handle includingan elongated bar having a pair o'f'eyesspacedapart'and engageable with the pivot means and the pin.
