Description

A. A. BENNETT. DOOR-BOLT.
Patehted June 12, I877.
",BY I
N- PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON, D. C-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ALPHEUS A. BENNETT, OF NEW BRITAIN, UONNEOTIO UT.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR- BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 19 1,8 14, dated June 12, 1877; applica ion filed May 5, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALPIIEUs A. DENNETT, of NewBritain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Door-Bolt, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved bolt, having the head of the thumb-piece removed to show thd-construetion of thebol t. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the position of the parts when the bolt is moved back or-withdrawn. Fig.3 is a View looking toward the side of Figs. 1 and 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a door-bolt that cannot be moved from the outside of the door.
The invention consists in the combination, with a sliding bolt, of a thumb-piece having a cross-bar, which, when the bolt is either retracted or projected, is capable of locking said bolt by turning the cross-bar of the thumbpiece at right angles to a slot of the guideeasing of the bolt, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. a
In the drawing, A is the bolt contained by the tube .13, which is fastened to a plate, that is attached to the door by screws in the usual way. A slot, 0, is formed inthe tube B, which connects two circular openings, 0. D is the thumb-piece of the bolt, that is provided with a shank or spindle, e, that passes through the bolt, and is riveted so as to be capable of turning in the .bolt. d is a bar or button formed on the thumb-piece D, which is of such length as to be capable of turningin the openings O, and is of such width as to easily pass through theslot c that connects the openings 0 (J.
When it is desired to draw the holtthe bar dis turned so as to pass through the slot in the tube B, and when the bolt is to be locked the-bar d is turned in one or the other of the openings 0, so that it cannot be made to pass through the slot by exerting force on i the bolt.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent- The combination of the thumb-piece D, having cross-bar d and shank or spindle c, with the sliding bolt A and tube .13, having openings U G and slot 0, said thumb-piece being capable of receiving a half-turn in opposite directions', tolock or unlock the bolt, as and for l the purpose set forth.
ALPHEUS A; DENNETI.
