One object of the invention is the provision of a simple mechanism adapted to deliver blanks one by one from a magazine and place the blanks accurately in another position; as for instance, on a mandrel, or former, of an automatic box making machine.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a blank magazine and blank feeding and blank placing devices of simple and practical construction, operating with other instrumentalities; as for instance, other mechanism of an automatic box making machine.
Other objects of theinvention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter. I
This invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.

As in the prior application above mentioned, a plurality of turret arms intermittently rotate in a horizontal plane above the table 1. on the end of each of the turret former or mandrel. These mandrels successively come to restv at a station where body blanks are placed there onby the 'placer13. In Fig. 1,one such mandrel is indicated at 20, at its rest, ready to'receive the bodyblank from placer 13. In order that the blanks may be retained upon the mandrel 20 when the placer 13 recedes, the blank may be held on the mandrel by suction. For this purpose, suitable pneumatic gripper openings and groovesare. provided in the blank receiving face of the mandrelQO and controlled conduits extend from the pneumatic gripper openings to a pump or exhaust apparatus 21. Thepneumatic gripping devices and the conduits are fully described in the prior applicationand reference ismade thereto for full description. j
In the present embodiment of the invention, the blanks to be fed and controlled are rectangular corner cut blanks, one of such blanks being indicated in dotted lines at 22 in Fig. 2. of the drawings. These blanks may be made of cardboard or pasteboard and have considerable stiffness so as to form the body blank of a paper box which is made by the automatic machine described in the prior application. These body blanks are relatively thick as compared wth the cover paper Which may be employed to give the finishedboxes an ornamental appearance.
The blank magazine, includes a plate 23 which constitutes the base of the magazine. Side walls of the magazine are indicated at 24. The side walls are connected to the base plate for adjustment toward and from each. other by means of screws 25, which pass through slots in angle plates 26 to which the side walls are secured, into engagement with the plate 23. A pair of blank supporting rails 27 is arranged at each side of the plate 23 on the top thereof, and each pair is connected to the plate for adjustment toward and from the other pair by screws 28 passing through slots in outwardly extending feet 29 on the outermost rail of the pair.
The blank feeder includes two pusher bars 30 which are mounted to slide on and move between the members of each pair of rails, and the bars 30 are connected at the end remote from the mandrel 20 by means of a crosshead 31. The crosshead is connected to a slide 32 mounted to move in a guideway 33 on the underside of the plate 23, and at the center thereof. The inner members of the pairs of rails are rabbeted on their outer faces and at their upper edges, to receive the bars 30', and the inner wall of the rabbet has a longitudinally extending rib 34 engaging a similarly shaped groove in the adjacent bar, thereby to guide the bar. The corner-cut body blanks 22 which are cut to shape, each comprise a rectangular body and side and end flaps, adapted to be folded on mandrel 20, to provide an open rectangular box or tray, and these blanks rest in a pile upon the rails 27, and they are held in posi tion in the magazine, bya gauge bar 35 on .the table 23 and by spring plates 36 on the side walls.
The gauge bar 35 is adjustably connected with the table, by a screw and slot connection indicated at 37 and the resilient plates 36 are adjusted toward and from each other, by means of set screws 38 threaded through the side walls 24 and provided with locking nuts for holding them in adjusted position. The spring plates 36 are adapted to center the blanks in the magazine and are connected to the side walls at their upper edges, their lower edges being outside the rails 27, and being free, so that by turning the set screws 38, the spring plate 36 may be flexed and the alignment of the blanks with respect to the transferring mechanism, to be later described, may be assured. The end flaps of the blanks rest on the rails, and the spring plates 36 engage the free edges of the said flaps, thus acting to guide the blanks in the magazine. The gauge bar 35 engages back of the pile of superposed blanks, as shown in Figure 2. The pusher bars 30 extend above the rails 27, a distance corresponding to the thickness of a blank, so that when the pusher bars are moved toward the mandrel 20, they will engage the lowermost blank in the magazine and push and deliver it out from beneath the pile.
A pair of blank retaining lingers 40 are arranged at the front of the magazine, for preventing the passage of-more than a single blank. As shown in Figures 1 and 5, the retaining fingers are adjustably connected to angle plates 41 supported by the side walls. Each finger is adjustably connected with the adjacent angle plate, by a screw and slot connection 42, and the lower ends thereof are spaced above the rails, just far enough to permit the passage of one blank. The lower outer cornerof the fingers are beveled, and by loosening the screws, the fingers may be adjusted vertically in accordance with the thickness of the blank.
The slide 32 is operated by a rock arm 43 pivoted at 44 to the table 1 and having onearm connected by a link 45 with the slide. The other arm of the rock shaft is connected by a link 46 (Figure 3) with operating mechanism to be later described.
The blanks are fed from the magazine onto a blank placer which is reciprocally movable between the position in which it receives blanks from the magazine and blank placing position, in which latter position the blank is placed on the mandrel. The placer includes a swinging table or placer plate 13. This plate is secured to one of the arms 47 of a rock shaft 48 journaled in bearing brackets 49 on the table 1, audit is normally spring held in lowered, horizontal, blank receiving position, below the upper edges of rails 27, by means of a coil spring 50 arranged between another arm 51 onthe rock shaft, and a stop on the table. The arm 51 is connected by means of an adjustable link 52 with operating mechanism to be later described. At regular intervals, the placer plate is swung upwardly into vertical position, as shown by dotted line position of Figure 1, by the operating mechanism connected with the link 52,

i The shaft 5 before mentioned is journaled in bearing brackets on the lower table, and it is driven table 3. The shaft of the motor has a wide pinion 6, which meshes with a pinion 56 on for controlling the suction of the mandrels 20,;and with the gear wheel 7 at the opposite side from the pinion 56. The gear wheel 7 is journal'ed on the frame, and carries the pinion ,8 which meshes with the gear wheel 9 on the shaft 5. The rock shaft 48 is operated-to swing the body blank, fed onto the placer table 13, into engagement with the mandrel '20 by means of ,thecaml2 secured on the shaft 5 (Figure 6). A lever 62 is pivoted to a support 63 adjacent the cam and is provided intermediate its ends with a friction roller 64 engaging the edge of the cam. The link 52 has a slidable and universal joint connection with the lever 62.

In a machine of the character described, inv combination, a magazine for containing a pile of superposed blanks, a blank feeder for delivering blanks from said magazine, a pair of blank supporting rails, and a blank 1 placer reciprocally movable between blank placing position and a position to receive blanks delivered by said feeder, said placer having swinging movement between blank placing and blank receiving positions, said feeder including pusher bars sliding on, and extending above, said rails.
8. In a machine of the character described, in combination, a magazine for containing a pile of superposed blanks, a blank feeder for delivering blanks from said magazine, a
blank placer reciprocally movable between blank placing position and a position to r ceive blanks delivered by said feeder, andv a pair of blank supporting rails below the upper edges of which said placer is disposed beneath the upper edges of said rails, and
blank gauges on said placer plate.

Ina machine of the character described, in combination, a magazine for containing a pile ofsuperposed blanks, a horizontally reciprocal blank feeder for delivering blanks from said magazine, a pair of rails on which the blanks slide on, delivery from the magazine, a blank placer plate having swinging movement from vertical, blank placing position to horizontal blank receiving position beneath the upper edges of said rails, and blank gauges on said placer plate, said gauges including longitudinally and laterally gauging members joined together and longitudinally adjustable on said placer plate.

In a machine of the character described, in combination, a magazine for containing a pile of superposed blanks and includinga blank adjusting, spring plate supported inside the magazine, means adapted to flex said spring plate, a pair of blank supporting rails, a blank feeder including pusher bars sliding on and extending above said rails and having rabbeted engagement with said rails, and a blank placer plate having swinging movement from blank placing position to blank receiving position beneath the upper edges of said rails.
