My invention relates to a paper rece tacle for the transportation and Stora e o merchandise of variouskinds. Contamers made in accordance with my invention are partlcularly adapted for packing articles which are relatively heavy in proportion to their bulk or articles of a fragilenature.
The object of my invention is to provide a paper box or carton with closure means which will provide both interlocking sealing means and with a convenient handle by means of which the package maybe carried.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one form of receptacle made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan View, the sealing means being shown in closed position; Figure 2 is a sectlon taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1, the arts being positioned to form a handle; and a plan, on a reduced scale, of the blank from which the container is formed.
The container is formed from a single rectangular sheet of iberboard or similar material stamped out as shown in Figure 3. This blank is provided with horizontal bending creases 1 and vertical creases 2 producing a pair of side panels 3 and a pair of end panelsV 4. The free edges of the panels are secured together, to form a tubular structure, by any suitable means such as a strip of gummed tape 5 (Figure 1). The portion of the blank below the lower crease lis dividedv by slots 6 to provide scaling flaps 7 which are bent over at right angles to the panels and secured in any manner, such as stapling or gluing, to form the bottom. of the receptacle.
The portion of the blank above the upper crease 1 is divided by slots 8 into foursealing fiaps for forming the top of thecontain- -preferably those connected to the end panels 4, are rectangular in form andare of suicient length to overlap and form the inner part of the containertop. The other pair are each divided by a bending crease 10 into a lrectangular portion 11 and a T-shaped handle portion 12. The portion 11 of one f the ilaps has formed therein slits 13 to form a semicircular tab 14, which, when bent out as shown in Figure 2, .provides a linger hole 15, and a igure 3 is rectangular tab 16 vfor engagement with the T-sha d handle of the opposite flap, as shown in igure 1. The slits forming the tabs 14 and 16 intersect .each other, as shown, so that when the tabc14 is depressed, the end of the finger may be inserted below the tab 16 to slightly raise it to permit of the easy insertion of the handle portion.
When the container is` shipped or stored,
the upper pair of sealing liapsare held in int terlocklng engagement bythe insertion of one of the handle portions lbelow the tab 16, as shown in Figure 1. When the container is to be carried the handle portion 12 is disengaged rom the slit 13 and the two outer flaps 11 are bent along the crease lines 10 to bring the handle portion 12 into approximate 2. The tab 14 is bent inwardly, this figure. The mididle linger may then be inserted through the opening 15, the first finger encircling one end of the handle formed by the two T-shaped parts, and the third and fourth fingers encirclin the other end thereof. The turned-over ta 14 rests upon the middle linger, which carries the major portion of the weight, thus'avoiding the contact of a sharp edge of the iberboard with the finger.
It .will be seen that my construction not onl provides sealing means for the container, ut at the same time provides a strong and comfortable handle for carrying the packa e.
gHaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A paper receptacle comprising a body having at its upper end a pair of op osing flaps each provided with a T-shaped andle portion, and Abendingv creases at the junctions of the iiaps and handleportions 2. `A paper receptaclecomprising a body havingat its upper end a' pair of opposing flaps each provided with a T-shapedhandle portion, bending creases at thejunotions of the flaps and handle ortions, and a finger opening in one of .the aps adjacent the bending crease. l f
3. A paper receptacle ,comprislng a body y parallel position, as shown in Figure' as shown in having at its up er end a pair of op osin flaps each provied with a T-shape hangdle ortion, bending creases at the )unctions of t e flaps and handle portions, a finger opening in one of the flaps adjacent the bending crease, and a slit in one of the flaps for engaging with the handle portion of the other flap to lock the receptacle.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aiix my signature, this the 12th day of November,
1932. BENJAMIN M. WILLIAMS.
