` A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY ATOMIZER Application led January 29, 1930. Serial No. 424,246.
"dy invention relates to atomizers such as are highly practical and cflicient in operation,
ily inventionL relates to an atomizer construction having novel characteristics adapting;` it for medicinal and other uses.
Further objects, advantages and charac-v teristics of my invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
My invention residesv in the atomizer, the arrangement of parts and features of construction of the character hereinafter described and claimed. p
For an illustration of one of the many forms of my invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of an atom-l izer constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 isa plan view of thev atomizer shown in Fig. l with the closure. cap removed.
3 is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation, and is taken on the line 3 3 ai rows.
Fig. 4i is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation, and is taken on the line 4 4- of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
F 5 is a ho 1izontal sectional View, partly in plan, and is taken on the line 55 of Fig. lool-ring in the direction of the arrows, the liquid receptacle being removed.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary7 perspective view of latching mechanism for the pump plunger.
F 7 is an enlarged, vertical sectional view of the atomizing conduits. y
Referring to the drawing, C represents a casing housing or container of any suitable configuration and herein shown as comprising a base l adapted to rest upon any suitable support or surface, a protective layer la, of felt the like being` secured to the lower face cf l if desired. Y y
Upstanding from the basel is the casing lower side wall structure 2 which may be and preferably is generally circular in horizontal cross-sectional configuration. Preferably, the lower side wall structure 2 terminates at its upper end in a circular flange 2a` adapted to support a similar circular flange 3a; forming the lower surface of the casing upper side wall structure or cover member 3 which likewise preferably is generally circular in horizontal cross-sectional configuration and shaped to form a throat section which merges uniformly toward the longitudinal axis of said casing C.
The lower and upper side wall structures 2 and 3 are adapted t'o be detachably secured together in any suitable manner as, for example, by a ring 4- flanged for sliding engagement with the upper surface of flange 3a and threaded so, as to be detachably secured to the upper threaded surface of the lower side wall structure 2.
Preferably, the upper side wall structure 3 terminates in a horizontal flat surface 8b, Figs. 3 and 4, having. a central perforation through which extends the stem 5a of a member 5 otherwise disposed interiorly of the upper side wall structure 3 and soldered or otherwise suitably secured thereto.
In accordance with a preferred form of my invention, the casing C is divided into lower and upper compartments by a wall or partition 6 extending transversely of the lowerside wall structure 2'.
Disposed in the lowerl compartment of casing C is an air pump of any suitable construction. As herein illustrated, Y the air pump comprises a pump cylinder 7 the longitudinal axis of which is disposed'at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the casing C. The pump` cylinder 7 is secured in the position illustrated in any suitable manner; in the present case, the lower side wall structure 2 has diametrically alined perforations receiving opposite ends of said pump cylinder 7 which extends slightly beyond opposite sides of said side wall structure 2 as illustrated particularly in Fig. 3.
One end of the pump cylinder 7 is closed by a section 7a formed preferably integrally therewith, the other end of said pump cylinder 7 being closed by a closure cap 8 prefs SLO erably threaded thereto and having an exterior actuating section 8a.
The section 7a of the pump cylinder 7 comprises a plunger rod 9 mounted for reciprocatory movement thereupon and having an actuating knob 9a at one end thereof. The other `end ci plunger rod 9, wit-hin the pump cylinder 7, may be formed with threaded terminal of reduced diameter on which is mounted a iirst disk 10, a second disk 11 of soit leather or the like llanged in the customary manner as shown, and a third disk 12, the disks 10 and 12 being oi tively non-'flexible material and serving to clamp the disk 11 therebetween.
Preferably, the pump cylinder section 7a is formed with an air-passing perforation to one side ot the plunger rod 9*'and the disks 10, 11 and 12 should also be formed with similar perforations, all of the latter being alined as illustrated. l,Vith a construction of the character just described, it is desirable that a member 13 oi iielt or the like be disposed sidewise against the outer surface of the disk 12 and that a resilientmember lll of sheet metal be disposed sido'- wise against the layer 13. rlhus, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the disks 10, 11 and 12 together with the members 13 and la are disposed sidewise in tace-to-:lace relation, a nut 15 threaded to the terminal ot plunger rod 9 retaining all of said disks and members in assembled relation as shown.
Any suitable arrangement may be utilized for biasing the pump plunger 9 toward and into the position shown in Fig. 3. As here in illustrated, a helical spring 16 is thus! utilized, one end o1c said spring seating upon the plug 8 and the other ond thereof around the nut 15. With the plug 8 detached from the pump cylinder 7, the pump mechanism comprising the disks i9, 11, 12, members 13 and 14;, together with spr-ing` 16 may be Alirst assembled in said pump cylinder 7 and then the plug 8 threaded into position whereby the various parts are placed in operative relation for manual reciprocation oit' the plunger rod 9 which, preferably, reciprocates through a member 17 disposed interiorly of the pump cylinder section 7 ci and suitably secured thereto, the member 17 functioning as a stop.
The pump plunger 9 may be latched or retained in its inner or retracted position in any suitable manner. To this end and as herein illustrated, a headed pin 18 is secured exteriorly to the pump cylinder section 7a. for coaction with a lateral lug or member 9b formed on the plunger head 9a. Ubviously, the pump plunger 9 may be moved to its inner position whereupon by more or less slight rotation of the head 9a, the member 9h may be latclied behind the head of pin 18 as well shown in Fig. 6.
The upper compartment of casing C is adapted and intended to contain any suitable liquid medium to be atoinized by the herein described mechanism. Such liquid medium may be introduced directly into upper compartment or and preferably, a suitable receptacle or bottle 19 is provided for the purpose described. As herein illustrated, said receptacle 19 is shown as disposed in said upper compartment so that it projects thereabove, said receptacle containany desired quantity ot aV suitable lioi uid The receptacle 19 mi i be medium L. 'formed of any suitable material, metallic or otherwise. It 'formed of metal which reacts chemically with a liquid medium L, it may be suitably coated on its interior surface to prevent such reaction. However, and as illustrated, the receptacle 19, preferably, is formed from glass, or the like.
By preference, the receptacle 19 seats or rest-s upon a suitable resilient member 2O which may be of a plural-arm coniiguration such as well illustrated in Fig. 5, the spring member 20, when the parts are in assembled relation, biasing the receptacle 19 upwardly, (see Figs. 3 and ll), so that the outlet through the receptacle neck 19a is closed or sealed by a member or pad 21 of suitable resilient material, as soft rubber, cork or 'he like. As herein illustrated, the pad 21, to some extent, is detachably secured to the member 5 since the depending stem 5l) is received by a centrally disposed perforation formed in said pad 21. said depending stem 5b comprising screw threads, if desired, to enhance the frictional relation thereof with respect to said pad 21.
The upstanding stem 5a of member 5, preferably, is exteriorly threaded so that a member serving in part as a nozzle housing 22 maybe threaded thereto, said member 22 comprising an axial passage which may be threaded interiorly at the upper end thereof to receive the threaded shank of a cap member 23. Preferably although not necessarily, said threaded shank of cap member 28 carries a member 24 of cork, soft rubber or the like utilizable as hereinafter described. Furthermore and preferably, the cap member 23 carries a ring 25 loosely swiveled thereon to which is secured one end ol a chain 26 or other flexible element, the other end of said chain being connected to an eyelet 27 carried by a suitable part ol the casing` C.
The aforesaid member 5 is provided with a passage through which a tube or conduit 28 extends, one end ot said tube being adapted to depend into the liquid medium L contained by receptacle 19 and the other end of said tube rising above the stem 5a of member 5 and being adapted for enclosure by the nozzle housing 22, the upper end olf said tube 28 being closed and being provided nnmediately therebelow with 'a laterally extending nozzle 28a.
Adapted for enclosure by the nozzle housing 22 is the upper end of a second tube-29 having a nozzle 29a positioned immediately adjacent the nozzle 28a and angularly related thereto so that it is coactable therewith as hereinafter described. The tube 29 is adapted to communicate with the pump cylinder 7 in the region thereof immediatelyV adjacent the plug 8 and this relation may be obtained in any desired: manner such, for example, as herein illustrated wherein the tube 29 extends through the member 5 to a One end of a third tube or conduit 32 is adapted to be disposed within the nozzle housing 22, said tube 32 depending through the member 5 and communicating with theY receptacle 19. The tube 32 functions to prevent formation of the partial vacuum within the receptacle 19 during operation of the atomizing mechanism.
The upper side wall structure 3, on lower interior surface, has a ring or annulus 33 suitably secured thereto, said ring depending slightly below the flange 3a and fitting within the flange 2a as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. Carried by the lower surface of flange 3a and surrounding the ring` 33 is a packing ring 34 through which the lower end of the aforesaid tube 29 extends.
As illustrated, the nozzle housing` 22 forms an enclosure for the upper end of the con duits 28, 29 and 32. In addition, the upper exterior surface of 'the nozzle housing` 22, preferably, is tapered as indicated so that it may be introduced into a nostril, for example, after removal therefrom of the cap As will be observed, the cap 23, in ref sponse to rotary motion, may be remo ef. from the nozzle housing 22, the latter, by similar motion, being removable from the upstanding stem 5a of member 5. The ring` 4 may be rotated to release the same from the threads provided on the upper exterior surface of the lower side wall structure 2 whereupon the upper side wall structure 3 may be detached. With the parts thus disassembled, a suitable quantity of a desired liquid medium L, usually but not sarily a disinfectant, medicinal or soothing agent, may be introduced into the receptacle 19 which may be removed from the lower side wall structure 2 for the purpose if desired. Thereupon, the upper side wall structure 3 may be so placed upon the lower side Wall structure 2 that the lower end of tube 29 enters the upper end of tube 30. `With 'these parts thus related, proper rotation of the ring i causes the upper and lower side wall structures to be secured together whereby the throat 19a of .receptacle 19 is sealed by the pad 21 and the joint between the tubes 29 and 30ris sealed due to the provision of the gasket Thereafter, the nozzle structure 22 and cap 23 may be placed in position an obviousmanner, the cap 23 when suitably threaded into the i'iozzle member 22 causing tl e upper end of tube 32 to be sealed bythe resilient member 2-i.
To place the device in operation, the cap 23 is removed and then the knob 9a, is rotated slightly to disengage the member 9b from pin 18. ,Lifter so doing, the casing C may beheld in one hand and the pump plimger 8 reciprocated by thumb or linger action 'thereby pumping through. the conduits 30 and 29, jets of air intermittently passing vfrom the conduit nozzle 29a at relatively high velocity and sweeping past the nozzle of conduit 28 whereby some of the liquid medium L rises through said conduit 28 and is atomized and projected through the upper open end of the nozzle housing 22. Since trie receptacle 19, at this time, .is open to the atmosphere through conduit 32, it results that the pressurein said receptacle 19 remains at atmospheric value,
Alfter completion of the desired atomizing action, the pump plunger 8 may be latch/ed in its inner position in an obvious mann-er. This should be done before the cap 23 is placed in position at the end of nozzle housing 22 to minimize or obviate danger of leakage at the upper enL of tube 28.
After the cap has been threaded into the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the resilient member 24ew eoacts with the upper open end of tube 32 to prevent accidental or unintended passage of the liquid medium L through lsaid tube 32V such as would be otherwise caused should. the atomizer be held in. inverted relation.
Vfhen the pump piunger moves from right o left, F ig. 3, air is prevented from leaving the pump cylinder 7 by way of the perforations in the disks 10, 11 and 12 due to the fact that such perforations are closed by the members. 13 and 14. However, when the pump plunger moves from left to right, Fig. 3, the members 13 and 14, by valve action, permit passage of air interiorly of the pump casing 7 by way of the aforesaid perforar-.
tions.
Ars heroinbeforc stated, the nozzle housing` 22 is detachable from the upstanding stem 5a of member 5. rllhis arrangement is delosl . above said pump cylinder and adapted sirable because said nczzle readily be ien'ioved to ebt nozzle 28e and so that therethrough may be cleared s oi`V them become clogged.
While the invention has been described with respect to a certain particular example which gives satisfa l rez-aires, i will be understood by those skilled in t a ter understanding the invention, that chang s and mof'lieatimis may be made tiiout departi om t* spirit and scope ci the invention housi n e' 22 may i n access to the the pass d it is intended therefore in the api ended claims to cover all suon changes and mediiieations.
