ronnannafrannaf Application filed lax-c119,
This invention relates to folding tables and has special reference to such tables particularl adapted for use as banquet, picnic tables, I
ort elike. d a t t The principal object is to providea more practical, simple, and staunch table of this a character than heretofore known. t a Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description thereof. l 1 Referring no w to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, and
wherein like referenc likepartsi a r i t Figure 1 is a bottom plan'view of one of the improved tables as it appearawhen folded;
e characters indicate a Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 Figure 1, showinga fragmental portion of one pair of legsin open osition;-wh1 le Figure 3 is an enlarge section simllar to ge, showing the legs in folded position. V
a 1 representsthe table top and 2 a depending marginal reinforcing member thereaboutsQ 3 i represents a transverse bar at either end of the table, fixed to the under side of the top, and spaced from the end marginal member, and which bar varies in thickness in a proportion to the width of thetable. This bar acts also as a reinforcing member for the top and asupport for the legs, a a d A small transversebar 4 is also fixed to the under side of the table top intermediate of d the marginal members which acts as a support for the metal stripe-6 extendingcen trally of the table from the cross-bar 4 to the cross-bar 3, and to both'of which itlis attached as well as to the under side of the table top, as indicated at 6, the other portion 5 of the strip being spaced from the table to formin a channel 7 therebetween, whic channe terminates adjacent the ortion 6 in an inclined loop 8, the purpose o which will be described later.
To each bar 3 is pivotally attached adjacent H the innermost edge thereof as by thehinges 9 a pair of legs indicated at 10. These le S may be of any desired construction, but t e hinge arrangement is peculiar in that one half of th e 1 hinge is positioned prone upon the portion occurring over and above the lower innermost edge of the bar ,while the other half of fithe hinge :is brought downland 5 fastened prone;:against theback side of the leg member and ofiiset the thickness of the bar 3 on the end of the legs, so that whenthe pair a of legsis in supporting position under the table, they occur approximately centrally beneathtlieinnermost edgeof the bar 3 with the adjacent end of-s ach legportion abutting against the horizontal portion 0f the hinge,
thus insuring a positive limitation ofmotion i outwardly of the ileg member when" swung a intolsupportingipositionb 1. Asa preferred form ofpairof legs there is providednthe two spaced transverse mem My bears 1 1 and l2, the latter beingspaceddowm V wardly from the end of. the leg inembers 0 proper, andwtlie former:stillfurther down Wardly towardsthefree endsof thelegs, and in 2 thetwo corners thusformed at the junctionof v the member 11 withthe legs proper is placeda metal bracket 13 for pivotal support of the V-shaped brace 14, the bent termini of which extend through the depending half of the metal angle bracket, and the positioning of this pivotal point of the brace is such that when the pair of legs is in its ultimate s racket 14 will fall within the slot formedby the inclined loop 8 as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the; drawing; this position being automaticallyassumed by the transverse action of the edge ofthe horizontal portionof the bracket 13 impinging against the portions ofthe brace 14 adjacent the pivotal connections of the brace. This is an essentialfea ture of the invention toinsure the automatic ultimate positioning of the brace when the air of legs are adjusted to supporting position. a
Now; when it becomes desired tofold the legs theapex end of the brace must be stressed against the normal bias to such locked position until such end thereofbe- 80 u orting positionfor thetable the apex of tlic as shown in Figure 1, when they are preferably Wholly within the plane of the lower face of the marginal member 2 resulting in a neat, compact and conveniently assembled folding table.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. A brace for a pair of foldable table legs comprising a V-shaped member the spaced. c
termini of which are pivotally attached to the legs, a track longitudinally of the underside of the table top and having a notch therein p A and the apex of the brace slidably attached to I the track, and means whereby final placingof, I the legs into ultimate supporting position causes stress in the bracewhich forcibly urgesv the apex-of. said bracetowards locked posi:--
against the under side of the top-thereof; tracksteach having a notch therein secured to said tabletop v-shaped braces carried by said legs andoperable in said track notches for holding .the 'legs in extendedposition, and
means carried by each pair of said' legs for forcibl, urging the brace toward said notch when t e legs are-extended.
p In testimony whereof I a ffix-my 'signature.
