Description

June' 13, 1933.
P. SCHLUMBOHM l WRITING UTENSIL Filed Dec. 11, 19550 INVEN TOR. vsm/am/Qa/z/fz BY M, y@ W ATTORNEYS.
Patented .lune 13, 1933 UNITED STATES PETER SCHLUMBOHM, OF BERLIN, GERMANY WRITING 'UTENSIL Application led December 11, 1930, Serial No. 501,620, and in Germany December 12, 1929.
My invention relates to a writing utensil and more particularly to a writing utensil which is combined with a smoking utensil. Combinations of writing utensils are known with a smoking utensil, but up to my invention these combinations had only the aim of creating a utensil which might serve as a writing or as a smoking utensil. So a pocket pencil has been known to have a hollow space in which a cigarette holder could be inserted. Furthermore, a fountain pen has been so joined that in the one instance 1t has served only as a fountain pen and in the other solely as a cigar holder.
As a contrast to this, an instrument has now been invented by me in which the writing instrument and the smoking utensil have been so put together that they can both be used at one and the same time. The purpose of this is to prevent the necessity vof laying down the pencil in order to take up the cigarette. This is of great importance to smokers who have a great deal of writing to do, and whose left hand is also constantly in use, for instance for telephoning, so that only the right hand is free for writing and smoking.
In Figures 1 to 5 a few examples are illustrated. In each case Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a writing utensil Fig. 2 is a similar view of a smoking utensil with pencil attached.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the combined fountain pen and cigarette holder,
Fig. 4 is a similar view of another form of combined fountain pen and cigarette holder.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of a cigarette and pencil holder.
Figures 1 and 2 are two examples in which a screw pencil is joined to a cigarette holder. In thisdesign the cigarette holder is joined to the pencil by screwtop 5, so that the rela- 15 tions of the parts 1 and 2 can be varied. Where an ordinary pencil is used projecting end 8 of the cigarette holder is provided with a sleeve or a metal clip 7 into which the pencil 1 is pushed and held secure by a clamping ring 9 slidable on the clip. This is shown in Figure 5. Figure 3 shows a cigarette holder 2, 3, in connection with a fountain pen, the fountain pen being screwed together. Figure 4 shows the same instrument of Figure 3, the fountain pen being ready for use. The cigarette holder is at tached to screw top 6.
`The figures show only examples. It is even not necessary to construction them to form one line. They could even be built 'as a double tube parallel to each other or concentrally set one into the other.
For the construction it is of advantage to use the same material for all parts except the tobacco-holding part 3, which has Ato be reproof. In this case, screw top 5 of the pencil (shown in Figures 1 and 2) or the screw top 6 of the fountain pen (shown in Figures 3 and 4) can be made out of one piece with cigarette holder 2.
In some cases it might be advantageous to construct the joint between the writing utensil and the smoking utensil movable or even detachable. The joint can be detachable, for instance by screwing or by a bayonet screw.
I have herein described and shown several practical constructions of my present improvements, .but it will be apparent that the construction is susceptible of embodiment in various other alternative forms and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed in the appended' claims.
What I claim is:
1. -A device for holding sundry articles in angular position to each other for alternative use, comprising a straight main stem having a bore from one end thereof extending part way of the stem, said end forming a mouthpiece, 'a sideways directed shank on said stem terminating with a socket adapted to hold one of said articles and provided with a duct forming a continuation of said bore; the other end of the main stem forming a handle and having a socket for another of said articles, whereby alternative use of the articles in said sockets is possible, while retaining thedevice in substantially the same position.
2. In a, device as described in claim 1, a cli surrounding the outer end of the secon socket and means on said clip ada ted to rmly lock the article in said secon socket.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
PETER SCHLUMBOHM.
