Description

June 13, 1933. J. 'CATARAU ARTIFICIAL TROLLING AND ANGLI NG BAIT Filed Feb. 24, 1951 INVENTOR Patented June 13, 1933 PATENT OFFICE TITLES GL'I'ABLU, OI SEATTLE, WASHINGTON ARTIFICIAL TBOLLING m AIGIING BAIT Application filed February :4, 1m. leflal Io. mass.
The invention relates to a scent holding receptacle adapted to be used in combination with a trolling or angling spoon, or the like,
trolling spoon, or the like, has simulated hitherto only visually.
On the drawing accompanying this application the Fig. 1 illustrates one of the many possibilities of coadunating said receptacle with a trolling or angling bait, and represents a plan view of the said receptacle concorporated with a trolling spoon as it appears ready for use if loaded with scented matter.
The Fig. 2 illustrates the same combination as the Fig. 1, but with the cover opened as if to receive a charge of scented materia.
The Fig. 3 illustrates a plan view of the said receptacle adapted to be used in association with a trolling or angling spoon, or the like, if said spoon, or the like, does not permit compatibly a concorporation substantially illustrated by the Figures 1 and 2.
The Fig. 4 illustrates the reverse of the Fig. 3. he Fig. 5 illustrates the side view of the Figures 3 and 4.
The Fig. 6 illustrates an introspective view 7 of the said receptacle as it appears when its cover is opened. I
The Fig. 7 illustrates the side view of the Fig. 6. he Fig. 8 illustrates a plan view of the said receptacle connected for use in association with a trolling spoon, or the like, and fulfilling the function of an efiluvium emanating appliance and of the swivel incidentally discarded. I
The Fig. 9 illustrates a plan view of the said receptacle as it may be used independently if charged with scented matter.
Similar numerals of reference indicate core res onding arts throughout the drawing. I I ome tro ling or angling spoons, or the like, permit the concorporation of the said receptacle within. its body-portion without inholes leading'into the said receptacle from all juring by such alteration its optical alluring efifi ct. n
or a tro ing or an lin s oon or the like which does not stand gith ut incongruity the; alteration caused by the concorporation of the said receptacle within its body-portion, I dev sed sai receptacle built apart, as substantlallyshown in the Figures 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, for use 1n association with the said trolling or anglmgspoon, or the like, as shown in the Fig. 8, or lndependently as substantially illustrated b the Fig. 9.
But 1n al cases said receptacle 1 has: an opening 2- permlttin free access into the said receptacle, so as to acilitate its cleaning and reloading with fresh scented matter; a cover 3 fitting over the said opening 2, so as to prevent the washing away of the scented materia introduced into the said receptacle through the said opening 2; means 4 for securin said cover to the receptacle; and means 5 facilitating qulck closing and holding of said cover shut over the said opening.
The means 5 consist incidentally of two lip-like expansions extending from the edge o the cover and adjusted to clasp over the edge of the receptacle, but-they may be extended from the edge of the receptacle so as to clasp over the edge of the cover.
In any such receptacle a cover 3 may be dispensed with if an appropriate shape in the said receptacle prevents the washing away of the efliuvium emanating materia.
The member (cover) 3 can enclose the scenting materia within its concave side if adjusted to an artificial bait having a straight or convex wall; the member 3 becoming container and the surface of the artificial bait a cover to said container. A plurality of 9O directions and identified on the drawing by the repeated numeral 6 is purposed to render said receptacle porous in order to allow the water to circulate in and out and contaminate its molecules with the emanation of the scented materia enclosed in the said receptacle, thus leaving an eflluviumwhich reveals the presence of the trolling spoon, or the like, carrying said receptacle, to the fish crossing the pathway said trolling spoon, or the 100 like, has scented, and to tempt the fish sought to bite at the said spoon, or the like, not only because it displays the visible characteristic of the food-fish, but also because it has the specific odor of the food-fish said trolling spoon, or the like, is simulating.
For the said receptacle when adapted to be used in association with a trolling spoon, or the like, as substantially shown by the lh'g.
8, swiveling means 7 are located at the two extremities of the said receptacle, so as to accommodate its fastening to the leader 8 of a troll and to the chosen artificial bait 9.
If incidentally said receptacle appears fit forindependent use in trolling or angling a link 10 carrying a fish-hook 11 may be secured to its rear end as shown substantially in the Fi 9.
is expressly understood that the surface of the said receptacle should be bright to match with the artificial bait, so as not to reduce the latters optical alluring effect by creating an incongruity.
While the drawing illustrates the invention in definite forms, it is also understood that changes in the shape and size may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and. scope of the invention.
., Moreover my invention will appear worthy for the fishing industry, as it will spare a huge quantity of herring wasted as bait by over 3,000 trolling boats in the waters of the Pacific alone; the materia emanating efliuvium required by my invention will be collected from the belly of the freshly cau ht salmon where often live herring and can lefish are found.
Therefore I claim:
1. In artificial bait, a lure body, a convexo-concave member hinged to said body, said convexo-concave member formed with a plurality of openings and extensions overlapping and grasping the sides of said body to provide a compartment to receive and enclose a scenting materia between the concave side of the said member-and the surface of said body. I
2. In artificial bait, a lure body, a platemember hinged to said body, said plate memher formed with a plurality of openings and extensions overlapping and grasping the edge of said body to define a compartment to receive and enclose a scenting materia between the inner surface of said plate-member and a recessed outer surface of said body.
