Description

E. ROW.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
Patented May 22,1877.

PATENT EDWARD Row, or INDIANA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-ESCAPES.
specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [91.181, dated May 22, 1877 application filed May 7, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD ROW, of Iudiana, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to fire-escapes, and has for its object to furnish a cheap and safe means of reaching the ground from the upper parts of buildings, &c., in case oftire; and it consists in the arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out by the claims.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a house, showing my lire-escape in position; and Fig. 2 shows a view of the same when not in use.
' A represents the metallic fire-escape, the
same being composed of a series of alternate links and rings loosely connected with each other, in the form as shown, the rings being made of such size as to admit of the hands and feet of the parties descending. v
To one end of this ladder, connected loosely, is a point, B, the same adapted to be driven into the wall, and provided with a projecting arm, C, over which the ladder can be hung when not in use, the ladder being secured to the loop a, of the arm C.
In use the ladder is hung upon the arm U, at such distance from the place of egress that it can be easily reached should it be hung at a window, and there being another window directly underneath the same, the parties descending would be in danger of the fire issuing therefrom. To obviate this I place at such distance from the point B as will allow the ladder to clear the lower window another arm and point, over which the ladder can be thrown when desired to be used.
' It will be readily apparent that my device can be cheaply and easily constructed, and that it is so simple that any one can manipulate it, all that is necessary being to slide it from the arm, when it will drop of its own weight, thus dispensing with the unlocking of trap-doors, raising of ladders, Src., as is now the common practice, and thus utilizing time, which, in such events, is very valuable, and in its construction only single links are required. It may be secured permanently to the outside of the window or used as a portable iire-escape, as desired.
Having thus fully described myv invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A {ire-escape composed of a series 0f alternate links and rings, A, provided with a suitable device for attaching the same to the place desired, as set forth.
2. A fire-escape composed of a series of alternate links and rings, and provided with a suitable device for attaching the same to the place desired, in combination with an auxiliary point and arm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own l have hereto afxed my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
EDWARD ROW.
