PATENT OFFICE O'I'SEGO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T CLEMENT F. SISSON, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN PAPER MAKING MACHINE Application filed December 2, 1932. Serial No. 645,375.
, The mainobjects of this invention are:
First to provide in a paper making machine a driving means for the forming apron or Web by means of which uniform tension is maintained on the web, thereby avoiding undue stretching which results in variation in the -web of paper formed and minimizes wear. 7
, Second, to provide in a paper making machine an improved driving means for coacting rollers whereby variation in diameter of the rollsis compensated for.
Third, to provide an apparatus having these advantages which can be readily installed in standard types of paper making machines, either as an addition or modification thereof or in new equipment.
Objects pertaining to details and economies-of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevatlon of a paper making machine embodying the features of my invention, the machine belng largely shown. in conventional form. I
Fig. 2 is .a fragmentary view partially in section on line -22 of Figs. 1 and 3.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. 4 I
Fig. 4 is a detail view partially in section on line '4& of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation showing driving connections for a co acting pair of rollers.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevatlon of these rollers.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified form or embodiment of the structure shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated 1 represents the stock feed box and 2 the coaoting cylinders. The forming web or felt 3 is held in proper relation to the cylinders 2 by means of the rollers 4. The web driving cylinder 5 is disposed at the front end of the machine and is driven through a planetary gearing consisting in the embodiment illustrated of opposed bev eled gears (Sand 7. The gears 6 are keyed to the journal 8 of the shaft 5 and the gears 7 are journaled to a stub shaft 9 alined with the journal 8. The journal 8 is supported in a bearing 10 while the stub shaft 9 is carried by a pedestal 11.
Planetary gears 12 coaoting with the gears 6 and 7 are carried by the pulley 13 driven by the belt 14: connected to the line shaft 15 through the jack shaft 16 and suitable gearing.
The shaft 9 has a brake drum 17 keyed thereto, one end of the flexible brake strip 18 being anchored at 19. The strip is passed over the drum and provided with a hanger 20 for weights 21. There is a plurality of these weights so that the amount of braking friction can be regulated as desired. It will be understood that the speed of the cylinder 5 relative to the pulley is varied according to the braking action on the gear 7. When the whole planetary gearing revolves as a unit the cylinder is driven at the same speed as the pulley, but when the gear 7 is retarded a variation in speed results.
A coaoting pair of rollers 22 and 23 are arranged at the opposite end of the forming web and at the rear of the press rolls 24, there being a series of these rolls. One of this pair of rollers as 22 in the, embodiment shown in'Figs. 5 and 6 is driven from the line shaft 15 by means of the belt 25 coaoting with a pulley 26 on the shaft 27 of the roll 22. The shaft 27 is provided with a gear 28 meshing with the gear 29 connected to the shaft 30 of the roll 23 through a onoway roller clutch 31.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 7 the lower roller 32 is provided with the clutch driving connection 33 to its gear 34, the upper roller 35 being provided with a coaoting driving gear 36. It not infrequently happens that one of a coaoting pair of rolls is of somewhat less diameter than the other owing to wear or the regrinding of the roller to true it up, and this resultsin a sliding of the surface of such roller on the formin apron or web or on the web of paper thereon Li Z:
tending to displace the fibers or to unduly wear the forming web.
WVitli this arrangement of parts there is a compensating action and by combination of the two driving means described a. substantially uniform pull or driving tension may be had on the web which enables production of a web of paper of full width, and the wear on the Web is minimized.
I have illustrated parts of the paper making machine mainly in conventional form for convenience in illustration. I have not attempted to illustrate various embodiments and adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described by invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
