FLUID AND MATERIAL SAVING DEVICE FOR OIL OR OTHER WELLS Filed NOV. 9, 1931 Patented May 23, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ADOLPH PARYZ'EK, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA FLUID AND MATERIAL SAVING DEVICE FOR OIL OR OTHER WELLS Application filed. November 9, 1931. Serial No. 573,913.
My invention relates to devices adapted for special use in connection with the pipes, casings or tubing of wells,-whereby oil, a circulating medium, such as rotary mud and the like, water or gas contained in said pipes, casings, tubing or the like may be saved and not spilled upon the derrick floor, as is now the case in general practice, said devices involving not only a marked saving of the fluid 19 in said pipes, tubing or the like, but also eliminating the deleterious effects of' spilling their contents not only on the derrick floors, but also upon the person and clothing of the operators.
It accordingly is an object of my invention to provide a novel form of device cOmprising a casing, preferably of plural part'form, having means for rendering said casing fluid tight, when associated with the pipes, tubing and the like of wells, said casing being adapted to receive the contents of said pipes or tubing, means being also provided to lock the parts of said casing together when in use, plural means being also provided for sus- 5 pending said casing in a plurality of ways,
or supporting said casing manually, any'conventional or novel form of drain means being provided for discharging the contents of said pipes or tubing to distant points, means being also provided for cleaning the device after use, and also for guiding the pipes, tubing'or the like into said means for rendering said casing fluid tight.
The above and further objects and advantages of my invention, as will herein-after more fully appear, I attain by the construction described in the specification and illustrated on the drawing forming a part of my application.

Describing my invention more in detail, in its broader-aspects said invention comprises a plural part casing, at least'two parts of which may be hinged together, said parts having suitable packing'glands, preferably positioned. at each end of said casing, said glands being adapted to engage the tubing, pipes and the like of oil or other wells, said casing having means whereby it may besuspended or manually held in a plurality of ways, said casing being adapted to'receive the fluids or materialin said tubing, pipes or the like, so said fluids or material will be saved. and notspilledupon the derrick floor or on theclothing or person of the operators, means being also provided for locking said casing in position on said tubing, pipes or the like, and, if desired, a suitable drain use.
More specifically, my invention comprises a suitable casing 2, constructed of any preferred material, and of any desired number T of parts, in'the present instance said casing com-prisingtwo complementary arcuate portions 4, hinged together in any suitable way as indicated by the reference numeral 6, which hinge may be of conventional or novel form, said: hinge'in the present instance comprising an elongated plate 8, to which the parts 4 are hinged as desired, such as a rod and loop construction 10, any preferred packlng means I00 12 (Fig. 5) being provided to; pack said' hinged portion at the juncture of the portions 4.
The casing 2 is adapted to be locked about the tubing 14, the joint 16, which is to be positioned within said tubing and unscrewed therein, so its contents may be emptied into said casing 2 and not spilled upon the floor of the derrick or upon the person and clothing of the operator.
To receive and pack the ends of the casing 2 about the tubing 14, the packing glands 18 are provided, which glands may be constructed of any preferred material and may be associated with the casing 2 in any manner in practice preferred, said glands being provided with cut-out portions 20 (Fig. 4, more particularly) in which are positioned in any suitable way the packing material 22 of any desired kind, said glands being preferably of a two part arcuate construction, the parts being movable with the parts 4 of the casing 2, so said parts may be swung toward and away from the tubing 14. To provide an easy method of guiding the tubing 14 into the cut-out portions20, the means 24 are provided, which means may be associated, with either one or both of the packing glands 18. as in practice preferred, said means preferably comprising a pair of members, such as plates, of suitable configuration and material, ailixed to the arcuate portions 4, and in front of the hinge 6, and superimposed upon one another, so vthat as said portions 4 of the casing 2 are swung together, the protruding ends of said plates will engage the tubing 14 to prevent the same from entering between the adjacent edges of the hinged sections, and thus guiding the same into the cut-out portions 20 of the glands 18, to insure speed of operation, and that the packing material 22 will accurately engage said tubing and hold said tubing firmly in position in the casing 2, without leakage. See Fig. 8.
To hold the casing 2 securely in the tubing 14, a novel form of locking means, designated generally by the reference numeral 26, may
be provided, said locking means preferably comprising a locking bar 28, of single or plural construction, adapted to engage suitable holding devices,'such as the hooks 30 of any preferred number, an operating member 32, suitably connected to the bar 28, so said bar may be caused to engage at least one of the hooks 30, said bar, if desired, being also provided with a hook engaging part,
such as the bent over portion 34, the other end of said bar, if desired, being ofl-set, as at 36. to engage the other hook or loop 30. See Fig. 2, more particularly, and said bar 28, if desired, being movable within keepers 38, of any preferred number, and associated as preferred with one of the portions 4. See Fig. 1, more particularly.
. To secure the operating member 32 in position, after the parts of the casing 2 are locked, a suitable loop and ratchet mechanism 40 may be provided, comprising a loop 42 and a suitable ratchet 44. See Figs. 1 and 4, more particularly.
Any preferred means for'suspending or holding the casing 2 may be provided, and plural means to this end are provided. To suspend the tubing vertically, the bail and loop construction 46 (Figs. 1, 2 and 4) may be provided. To suspend the device horizontally, the loop 48 (Figs. 1 and 2) may be provided. which loop may-take any form in practice desired and may be associated with the casing 2 in any way in practice preferred. To hold the casing 2 manually, the foot 50, may be provided, which foot may be associated with said casing in any manner in practice preferred, as by the member 6. Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 7. Where the parts 4 of the easing 2 join, any suitable packing means 52, may be provided. .See Fig. 2. Since such a packing means mav be of any form in practice preferred, further illustration and description are not deemed needed.
To drain the casing 2, after the joint 16 of the tubing 14 has been disconnected, and the contents thereof emptied into said casing, any preferred drain means, such as the pipe 54, leading to my receptacle, nearby or and 1 distant points, may be provided, and any suitable control valve 56 may be connected to said pipe to control the fiow of the contents of said tubing. If desired, also, any preferred cleaning means 58 may be provided, such means comprising a suitable spray means 60 (Fig.' 4, more particularly), connected to a source of fluid supply, such as water, by a pipe 62,
which pipe may have a control valve 64 (Fig.
2) for controlling the flow of said fluid, so said fluid may be sprayed within the casing 2 to clean the same, especially where a cir culating medium, such as rotary mud, is to be saved and prevented from spilling. My invention may be used to save oil, gas, water, or a circulating medium. 7 j y In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the prin- (L means for packing the sections of said casing for rendering said casing fluid tight, a circular spray means in one end of said casing,
and a valve controlled pipe connection for 30 feeding fluid to said spray means, whereby said casing may be cleaned.
2. In a device of the class described adapted for use in connection with a well tubing, a sectional casing, means associated with the sections of said casing for hinging said sections together, arcuate closures associated with said sections for closing said casing as it embraces said tubing, and arcuate overlapping guides associated with one end of said casing for guiding said tubing into said arcuate closures, to prevent said tubing from entering the adjacent edges of said sections.
3. In a device of the class described adapted for use in connection with a pipe, a sectional casing, means for hinging the sections of said casing together, an arcuate sectional closure positioned in each end of said casing, and a set of superimposed arcuate plates, positioned in one end of said casing, for preventing said pipe from entering the adjacent edges of said sections as said device is being positioned on said pipe.
