Description
Ap 8, 1933 M. M. SHAW COMB AND ACCESSORIES THEREFOR Filed Feb. 6, 1932 00000cfi1000000 INVEN'TOR. 2 M4.
: ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 18, 19 33 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE MILTON M. SHAW, on NEW YORK, n. Y., ASS-IGNOR r NEW YO K MERCHANDISE, 00. I mo. or new YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION or new YORK COMB AND eocnssonrns THEREFOR Application filed February 6, 1932. Serial No. 591,283.
This invention relates to combs and accessories therefor. It is particularly directed to a protective device for preventing the teeth of a comb from bending, breaking or becoming distorted.
An object of this invention is to provide an extremely simple and cheap protector device of the character described, adapted to be readily applied to a comb or removed therefrom, and which shall be easy to manipulate, economical to construct, attractive in appearance, durable, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree.
()ther objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of the application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanyingdrawing, in which is shown one of the various illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a comb provided with an accessory embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a. cross-sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; V
Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the blank used for making my improved protector.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a comb of any usual construction, having a spine or back portion 11, heavy end teeth 12 and 13, and a plurality of parallel teeth 14' extending from said spine portion 11 and tapering inwardly toward the outer ends thereof. The teeth 14 are flattened and have rounded edges as in usual construction.
As is well known, combs such as comb 11, are made of material such as celluloid, and the teeth 14 are flexible. In shipment or storage of these combs, the teeth often become distorted or break. For the purpose of protecting the teeth against distortion,
bending, or breakage, I have provided the protector 15, comprising an elongated strip made of sheet celluloid, bakelite'or any other suitable material. The protector 15 may be of U-shapedor channel-shaped cross-section, and comprises a bottom wall16 and a pair of side walls 17 and .18 extending from said wall 16., The wall 16 is formed with a row of similar slots 19 adapted to receive the tips of the teeth 14. The slots 19 are preferably similar to the cross-section of the teeth 14,
and are provided with rounded ends. The length ofthe slots -19is preferably such that the protective member 15 may be moved only a short distancebeyond the tips of the teeth, for example,.to the position'showninFigs. 1 and 2, the taper of the teeth acting as a stop for-said protectorin said position. With this construction, the teeth 14 are supported adjacent the free ends thereof, and kept in spaced relation, and movemenudistortion or bending of the teeth is effectually prevented. By reason of the engagement of the member 15 with the ends of the teeth, only a: small part of the teethproject beyond the problank 20, shown in Fig. 4', and is first stamped to provide the slots 19 and then bent tothe tector, thus effectively preventing any bendshape shown in Fig. 2. Theblank 20 ispreferably transparent topermit the teethto-be seen through the protector whereby the ends I of theteeth may be easily aligned withthe openings 19. Obviously, where a comb is made with a plurality of sets of teeth of clifferent thickness, the protector may be formed with a row of slots, a portion of the row being adapted to receive one set of teeth, and another portion heing adapted to receiveanother set of teeth. Preferably, the ends21 and 22 of the protector contact the heavy end teeth 12 and 13 of the comb to prevent the ends of the protectorfrom extending beyond the comb.
It will now be understood that the protector 15 may be easily applied to or. removed from the comb and willretain the teeth 14 in rigid condition.
It will thus. be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent i 1. In combination with a combhaving a plurality of teeth, a protector for said teeth comprising an elongated member having a row of openings receiving and gripping the outer ends of the teeth of said comb.
2. In combination with a comb having a pluralityof tapering teeth, a protector for said teethcomprising a member of channelshaped cross-section having a wall portion formed with a row of openings receiving and gripping the outer ends of said teeth, and wall portions extending'from said first wall portion and disposed on opposite sides of said comb.
3. In combination with a comb having tapering teeth, a member having a plurality of openings adapted to receive said teeth, said openings being of such dimensions that the member will receive only the tips of said teeth.
4. A comb comprising a back portion, a pair of substantially rigid teeth extending from the outer ends of said back portion, and a plurality of parallel, bendable teeth extending from said back portion and disposed between andin the plane of said rigid teeth, and a protector for said bendable teeth comand a protector for said teeth comprising an prising an elongated member engaging said I bendable teeth adjacent. the 'outer ends thereof.
5. In combination with a comb having a plurality of teeth, a protector for said teeth comprising an elongated member frictionally engaging the outer ends of said teeth.
6. In combination with a comb having a back portion and a pair of parallel rigid teeth extending from the outer ends of said back portion, a plurality of parallel bendable teeth extending from said back portion and disposed between and in the plane of said rigid'teeth, and a protector for said bendable teeth comprising'an elongated member having a plurality ofv openings receiving the outer tips only of said bendable teeth, said elongated member having the outer ends thereof contacting and terminating at the inner sides of said rigid teeth.
7 A comb comprising a back portion and a plurality of tapering parallel teeth extending from said back portion, said teeth being substantially of elliptical cross-section,
