Description

C. KA DE',
SOFA-BEDSTEAD. No. 190,335, Patented May'1Q1877.
' INVEN-ron:
NPI'ERS. PNDTU-LITHOGRAFNER. WASHINGTON, D C.
wPATE CHARLES KADE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOFA-BEDSTEADS.
Specicationforming part of Letters Patent No. 190,335, dated May 1, 1.877 application tiled February 23, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES KADE, of the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented certain Improvements in Sofa-Bedsteads, of which the following specication is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of sofabedsteads in which the two members are folded together on hinges at the front; and my invention consists in the following:
First, the head of the sofa is made to slide endwise, so as to hold both members together when in its inner position, and to release them when in its outer position, so that in the latter case the top may be turned outward to put it in the bed form.
Second, the hinges are made with a long arm upon each part, which has at the end an enlargement. The arm is let into the end board of the frame, and covered by a retaining-hatten. v
Third, the sliding head of the sofa works below upon metallic slide-plates, which are secured in the frame, and enter narrow slots or kerfs in the lower rails of the sliding heads.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the frame, not upholstered. It is shown in sofa form. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal v vertical section in sofa form. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of hinge. Fig. 4. is an under perspective detail, showing the slideplates. Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal section, showing my invention in bed form.
A A are the bottom rails, and B B the end bars. The rails have the usual ledges a, for the support of the mattress.
The sofa stands on legs G C', that, C, being located midway under the head.
The upper frame has side rails D, and end bars E, and a ledge, d, to which is secured the sofa-seat cushion and the bed-mattress. The lower and upper frames are connected at the front by hinges G, so that the upper frame can be turned outward, and on reaching a horizontal position its top is on a level with the top of the lower frame. These hinges have the rule-joint form, so as to have considerable vertical strength; andeach member has a long arm, H, having at the end an enlargement or head, h. This arm and head are let into the end bars, and covered by battons b, so as to hold said arms firmly in place, the head h preventing end movement.
At the head of each frame is a pillow-board, I, hinged to the frame at the edge t'. Beneath each of the boards I is a spiral spring, J, with an anti-friction roller, j, running underneath the board.
The arrangement is such that when the article of furniture is folded together in sofa form the boards I lie flat together, the springs being compressed; but when opened out into bed form the boards are raised at the edge i.
K is the head-frame of the sofa. This slides endwise upon the upper and lower frames, and, when in the position shown in Fig. 1, holds down the upper frame; but when the head-frame is in the outei` position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the upper frame may be turned out on the hinges Gr. This head-frame K has guide-rails k, having at the inner sides narrow grooves or kerfs k', entered by guideplates L, secured in the rails A, said plates and kerfs forming the chief guiding devices of the sliding head-frame K upon the main frames.
` As a modification of my invention, the hinged frame D E may be omitted, and the sliding head-frame K used in connection with Vthe frame A B alone, so as to form a single and sliding head-frame K, as and for the purf pose set forth.
4. The pillo w-boards I, hinged to the frame i A B D E, springs J, and anti-friction roller j, having guide-rails k and kerfs k', with the in combination with the sliding head-frame K, rails A, having metallic slide-plates L, as and as and for the purpose set forth. for the purpose set forth.
5. The hinges G, having long arms H and enlargements or heads h, in combination with CHARLES KADE.
the top and bottom frames A B G D, as and Witnesses:
for the purpose set forth. SAML. KNIGHT,
6. The combination of the sliding head K, ROBERT BURNS.
