Description

March 1933-v J. J. LYNCH ET AL BINDER Filed Aug. 20, 1931 --/N VEN TOR-S A 7'7'0RNE Y6 Patented Mar. 28, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JAMES J. LYNCH AND ERNEST n. nnnvon'rs, or ALBANY, NEW YORK, AssIGNoRs T0 J. B. LYON COMPANY, OF ALBANY, NEW .Yonx, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK nINnnn Application filed August 20, 1931. Serial No. 558,250."
Our invention more particularly relates to a temporary binder for a book and, while not limited thereto, is particularly useful as a binder for telephone books. The invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which we have illustrated a preferred embodiment of our invention and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a binder embodying our invention; v
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view through the back of the binder and illustrating the position of the supporting bar with respect thereto;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a binder enclosing a book, showing the supporting bar 1n position between the leaves of the book and illustrating a detachable hanger clamplng the book in the binder at the top;
Fig. 4 is a side view of a detachable supporting and clamping ring;
Fig. 5 is a side view similar to Flg, 4 illustrating a modified form of supporting and clamping ring; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating one of the free ends of the'detachable ring shown in Fig. 5.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing, 10 indicates generally a temporary binding comprismg two covers 11 formed of any suitable material joined together by a back 12. An integral supporting bar 13, preferably formed of metal, is provided with a supporting portion 131 secured to the back 12, as by rivets 14:, and a portion 132 which is bent inwardly from the supporting portion 131 and re versely with respect to the supporting portion j as at 133. The reversely bent portlon of the bar is preferably twisted, as at 15, at rightangles to the main body portion of the bar to adapt it to be received between the leaves of a book. Preferably the bar 13 is flat and rectangular in cross-section so that when the reversely bent portion is twisted at right angles to the remaining portion, the side faces thereof are parallel to the leaves of the book within which the reversely bent end is adapted to be received, thereby spreading the ring;
leaves to the minimum extent; Preferably thelength of the supporting portion of the bar 131 is less than'thelength'of the back of the cover and is located at the lowerend thereofwhenthe cover is suspended in the manner hereinafter described.
Our invention also provides means for clamping the opposite end of the cover to the book, the clamping'member also'preferably providing a hanger both for the cover'arld the book. In the embodiment of our inven} tion illustrated, the two. covers 11 are provided at the upper end With grommets 16 which provide registering openings 17 within whicha readily detachable ring 18 is received. In theembodiment of our invention illustrated in Fig. 4 the ring is split, one free end 181 of therin'g being providedjwith a recessin which is received'the other free'end The free end 182 of the ring is then forced through the openings 17 in the cover and the registering opening in the book, and then bent orsprung until received in the recess within the free end 181, as shown at 182.
The ring then not only serves to clamp the covers of the binding against the sides of the book but also serves as a convenient support for suspending the binding and the book from a hook.
Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate form of our invention in which the free end a slightly modified 181 of the split ring is provided with an opening 19 to receive a lug20 which may be formed by bending the free'end 182 of the In both types ofhanger it will be observed that the ring is not entirely circular but comprises a circular arcuate portion 190 of perhaps 270 and of a diameter adapted to em brace the back of the binder with the book thereinQ *Thiscircular portion merges into a narrower portion having substantially straight sides 191, connected at the top, to form the hanger. By forming the clamping ring in this manner, the binder is held closely to the book at the top and the section of the ring which opens is always maintained accessible. 7
While we have described our invention in its preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the words which we have used are words of description rather than of limitation and that the drawing is merely illustrative. Hence, changes within the purview of the appended claims may be made without departing from the true scope and spirit of our invention.
What we claim is:
1. A binder comprising two covers joined by a back, an integral bar having a supporting portion secured to saidback, and end of said bar being bent inwardly and then reversely with respect to the supporting por tion adapting said reversely bent portion to be received between the leaves of a book, and means for clamping said covers-against the sides of a book.
r 2. A binder comprising two covers joined a back, an integral bar having a 'supporting portion secured to .said back, an end of said bar being bent inwardly and then re Versely-with respect to the supporting portion adapting said reversely'bent portion to be received between the leaves of a book, said coversbeing provided with registering openings, and a detachable ring received within said openings for clamping the covers against the sides of said book and serving as a hanger therefor.
3. A binder comprising two covers joined by a back, an integral bar having a support, ing portion of less length than the cover, and secured to the lower portion of the said back, an end of said bar being bent inwardly and then reversely with respect to the supporting portion thereof adapting said reversely bent portion to be received between the leaves of a book, and means for clamping the opposite end of said cover against the sides of a book. .4. A binder comprising two covers joined by a back, an integral bar having a supporting portion of less length than the cover, and secured to the lower portion of said back,
an end of said bar being bent inwardly and r then reversely with respect to the supporting portion thereof adapting said reversely bent portion. to be received between the leaves of a book, the covers of said binding being provided at the end remote from the bar with registering openings, and a detachable ring received w1th1n said openings for clampin said covers against the sides of a book an serving as a hanger therefor.
