This invention relates to improvements in wringers, and is directed more particularly to improvements in wringers having safety features associated therewith.
The principal objects of the invention reside in the provision of a wringer wherein a pair of coacting rolls are releasbly held in operative engagement with certain parts readily accessible to the operator for manual manipulation whereby the operator may easily and quickly release the rolls from operative engagement.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a wringer of driving mechanism which is simultaneously disengageable as the rolls are released from operatlve engagement.

A pin 54 is carried by the cam member 20 and works in a suitable; bore in the member 40 so that as member 40 is oscillated the member 20 will be oscillated thereby while at the same time the member 20 may reciprocate in the housing quite independently of the member 40.
A fork or yoke member such as shown in Figs. 4 and 7 is secured by means of screws 62 to the ember 40. This fork 60 has an open ended 'slot 66 in the upper end which 1s directed upwardly for receiving a part asv sociated with. a driven roll as will later be described.
As the member 60 is swung in one direction or; the other the member 40 is oscillated to oscillate member 20. As the member '20 is oscillated it is reciprocated in the housing 6 means of the pin and slot arrangement described so'as to move the gears 22 between a neutral position and a position where either one or the other of the gears meshes with the drive gear 20.
Aldetent 41 in a bore 43 of the housing at thelower side thereof is urged by a spring 45 so as to engage a socket 47 of the member 20. The bore and socket are arranged so that the detent functions to yieldably hold the member 20 in a neutral position when the gears 22 and 24 are out of engagement with 1 gear 20.
The wringer frame F may take any form desired, but in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 2 it has upwardly extending end portions 70 which may be hollowed out as in Fig. 7. Bolts 72 are siidable therein and have springs 74 disposed between heads or nuts 76 and shoulders 78. These springs urge the bolts downwardly and the upper ends of the bolts are pivoted at 80 to cross bars or saddles 82, as shown in Fig. 7.
A driving roll is carried by the shaft 38 which extends between the end portions 7 0 of the wringer frame and is suitably journalled in the outermost portion 70.
A driven roll 92 which is entirely separable the lower drive roll. By releasing the roll 92 from the members 82 the operator of the wringer is safeguarded and the means for releasably holding the roll 92 in the saddles and in operative engagement with the drive roll will nowdoe described.
- The members 82 are provided with vertical y disposed slots on their adjacent inner sides for receiving the ends of the roll 92. As shown in Fig. 7, the side walls of the slots 100 are provided with circular'or curv ing seats 102. The roll 92 has a shaft 103 which carries inner races 104 of ball bearings, hubs or the like. An operating bar structure 110 extending from end to end of the roll 92 has end portions or arms 112 which are journalled on the parts 104 described whereby the roll and shaft are rotatable relative to 110 lower the roll 92 into place.- The ends Q 7 of the roll may be dropped downwardly into the slots 100 of the saddle members and when the roll 92 contacts with the roll 90 the mem- 120 on the saddles adjacent the seats are arranged to coact with cams or studs 122 on the member 110. The cams and cam faces are arranged so that as the member 110 is swung downwardly the roll is moved sideways of the slots 100. In moving sideways the part 112 of the member 110 enters a seat 102 and bymeans of the cam arrangement described the roll 92 is releasably bed in the seat and in operative engagement with the drive roll 90.
' WVith the roll 92 removed from the wringer the yoke 60 is disposed in a neutral position centrally of the slot 100. In this posltion the gears 22 and 24 are out of operative engagement with pinion 20.
As the roll 92 is lowered into the slots 100, as described, a part 111 associated therewith or with its shaftis received by the yoke. As the roll is moved sideways of the slot 100, as
$5 ber 110 is swung downwardly. Cam faces i described, the yoke is swung thereby so as to oscillate member 40 and cam 20 which is simultaneously reciprocated to bring gear 22 or 24 into mesh with pinion 20 whereby the lower roll is driven for driving the upper roll.
The parts are shown in Fig. 7 in operative relation and the shaft 14 may be driven in such a direction that the rolls 90 and 92 will be driven in the direction of the arrows shown in said Fig. 7, and in which case the operator will ordinarily stand at the left of the parts as shown. In this position should it be necessary to release the roll 92 from operative engagement the operator may by con- 112 which will strike upon or against the-in-- ner side of the slot 100 the roll moves inwardly of the slot so as to be free to move upwardly. In this way objects between the rolls are relieved of pressure.
It is noted that since the saddles are yieldingly held against upward movement that the roll 92 is yieldingly held in operativeposition against the roll 90 therebelow., In this way the rolls are capable ofv receiving therebetween various thicknesses of material for a proper wringing action. I
A drain board 130 as shown in Figs. 4 and 7 is dis osed between the ends of the frame 70 and is pivoted as at 132 for tilting movements. A lug 134 extending upwardly at one end thereof is disposed in the path of a mem ber 136 associated with the shaft 38. These parts are so arranged that in the rotation of the shaft 38 the member 136 will abutthe member 134 to tilt the member 130 as shown in Fig. 7. Should the shaft and roll rotate in opposite directions theparts are so arranged that the drain board will be tilted in an opposite direction.

An opening 173 is provided in the lower side of the cam 20 to receive the upper end 174 of the bolt. This opening is? disposed in such a way that it is above the rod only when the cam 20 is in an inoperative neutral position and in that position only may the bolt 107 be raised to allow the head to turn relative to the tube 12.
In an operative position of the parts shownthe head is locked against rotation. When the cam is in a neutral position the bolt may be elevated to allow the head to rotate.
A spring 175 between the housing and a hand grip 176on the rod urges the bolt downwardly so that a'pin 177 abuts the arni 171.

To operate the wringer the operator grasps the member 110 and by it lowers the roll 92 so that its ends are receivable in the slots 100 of the saddles. The roll 92 is lowered until it rests on the lower .roll and the member 110 is swung in one direction or the other so that the stud 122 engages with one of the cams 120. As the member 110 is swung downwardly as before stated, the cam arrangement causes the roll tobe moved trans versely of the slot so that the part 112 enters a seat 102. By means of the stud and cam and the seat the roll is releasably held in operative relation on the drive roll 90. '.As the and stud are disengaged.
In the event an operator has a hand caught between the rolls and then in some manner contacts with and moves the lever 110 up or down the upper roll will by reason of the pressure exerted thereagainst move upwardly to instantly release the part caught'between the rolls.
It will be noticed the rolls are held in operativeengagement by manually releasable means and that the driving connections for the wringer are moved into and out of dl'lV- ing engagement accordingly as the wringer rolls are brought into and out of operative engagement.
According to the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5, the roll 92 is released by an upward movement only of the member 110.'
In such a case a cam face 160 extends downwardly from the upper end of the saddle against the bottom of which the stud 122 abuts when the member 110 is in operative position.

A wringer apparatus comprising, in combination, a frame, a lower roll rotatable therein, spring pressed members at opposite ends of said frame, a guard having an upper roll associated therewith,- the said springpressed members being provided with receiving means for receiving said guard and upper roll so that said roll may rest on said lower roll with the axesof said rolls in a certain plane, the said receiving means being arranged to permit the upper roll in contact with the lower roll to be moved circumferentially of said lower roll so that the axes of said rolls are in a different plane from said certain plane, and releasable connections associated with said guard and spring pressed members to releasably hold said rolls in operative engagement.

A wringerapparatus comprising in combination, a frame, a lower roll rotatable therein, a guard having an upper roll pivoted driving connections for one of said rolls including a shiftable part for engaging and disengaging said driving connections, spaced members on said frame for removably receiving said guard and upper roll whereby said upper roll may rest on said lower roll with the axes of said rolls disposed in a certain plane, releasable connections associated with said members and guard arranged to permit the guard to swing on its pivotal connection with said upper. roll and move the guard and upper roll about the axis of the lower roll and releasably hold said upper roll in operative engagement with said lower roll wherein the axes of the rolls are disposed in a plane angular to said certain plane, a movable part for actuating said shiftable part adapted to receive said guard and be moved by swinging movements of the guard.

A wrlnger apparatus comprising in comblnation, a frame, a lower 'roll rotatable therein, a guard having an upper roll pivoted thereto, driving connections for one of said rolls having a shiftable part for engaging. and disengaging said connections, spaced spring pressed members on said frame procircumferentially of said lower roll and to r releasably hold saidroll in operative engagement with said lower roll wherein the axes of the rolls are in a plane at an angleto said certainwplane and an oscillatable member for receiving said guard which is operable by the swinging thereof to actuate said shift able member. A. wringer apparatus comprising in combination, a frame, driving connections in cluding a shiftable member for engaging and disengaging said connections, a lower roll removably connected to said connections, a guard having an upper roll pivoted therein, spaced membersyieldingly mounted on said frame provided with guard receiving parts whereby'the upper rollmay rest on said loW- er roll with the axes of said rolls disposed in a certain plane, the said parts permitting" the guard to be swung on its pivotal connection with said upper roll to a tilted position, means associated with said spaced members and guard operable as the guard is swung to move said upper roll circumferentially of said lower roll and to releasably hold said roll "10 in operativeengagement with the lower roll with the axes of said rolls in a plane angular to the said certain plane, an oscillatable member for receiving said guard which is operable by swinging movements thereof and is connected to said shiftable member and-a part associated with said guard which extends along said wringer in front of the rolls when the guard is in attilted position.

spring pressed members on said frame, a guard and upper roll pivotally connected, the said spring pressed members and apart associated with said oscillatable member formed to receive said guard whereby said upper roll may rest on the lower roll with the axes of said rolls in acertain plane and adapted to permit swinging of said guard, cam means associated with said guard and one of said spring pressed members adapted accordingly as the guard is swun to move said guard and upper roll'circum erentially of the lower roll and releasably lock saidguard and member in operative relation with the axes of said rolls in a plane disposed an- .gularly to said certain plane.

means associated with said support and shift ing member to bring about reciprocation of the latter as it is oscillated, a frame having receiving slots, an oscillatable member connected to said shifting member, a lower roll may move circumferentially ofLthe lower roll F I in said frame, a guard and pivotally mounted upper roll receivable in said slots, connections between one of said rolls and said driving means, the said slots and guard being adapted to permit the guard to tilt and the upper roll to move circumferentially of the lower roll and arranged whereby the guard is releasably locked in said frame and a part of said oscillatable member and said guard being engageable whereby the said member is oscillated by tilting of the guard.
17. A wringer apparatus comprising combination, a support, a pair of rolls, engageable driving means for one of said rolls including an oscillatable and reciprocable shifting member to engage and disengage the same, means associated with said support and shifting member to bring about reciprocation of thelatter as it is oscillated, an oscillatable member connected to said shifting member, a guard associated with one of said rolls mounted to tilt between operative and inoperative positions and move said roll circumferentially of the other roll and connections between the guard and oscillatable member whereby the shiftable member is operated by movements of the guard.
