This invention relates to an interchangeable holding member for projection machines, especially of the type in which a plurality of apertures are successively advanced to register with the beam of light of a projection machine for projecting purposes, and an object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is economical to manufacture, light in weight so as to be convenient to handle and manipulate, as well as exchange with users by mail, and which is especially efficient for the purpose. An additional object is the provision of an integral holding member provided with a plurality of properly spaced openings or apertures with means for mounting a plurality of pictures or translucent media for projection purposes. The device of the invention is particularly adaptable for use in connection with projection machines by lessees or subscribers to a service, in which the holding members are periodically exchanged, and for this purpose the insertions in the way of pictures or other media are permanently secured so as to avoid alteration and facilitate the exchange -or return of the entire holder. i
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Fig. l is a front elevational view of an embodiment of the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
As illustrated in the drawing, the preferred embodiment comprises a main supporting disc member 5 and a supplementary disc 6. Discs 5 and 6 may be composed of any suitable material, but a light metal such as aluminum has been found especially suitable and satisfactory. These disc members are of the same outside diameter so as to register in overlapping relation, but, as shown, disc member 6 has a relatively large found feasible to reduce Weight and limit the overlapping portions to the area pro vided with openings for projection purposes, as presently explained. The main disc member 5 is rovided with relatively small central opening 8 for mounting on a shaft or the like of a projection machine and, in the embodiment illustrated, is also provided with an axially offset opening 9 which may be used for engagement by a pin or other extension on a projection 'machme for engagement and rotation of the holding member. The two disc members 5 and 6 are secured together by fastening elements such as rivets 10, and are provided with a plurality of registering circumferentially disposed openings 11.- Each opening 11 may be of any desired outline, but in general use a rectangular opening as shown is employed for the projection of rectangular pictures. After the discs have been secured togetherin the manner described and the openings through the two overlapping discs provided, pictures or other media for projection purposes are inserted between the discs to register with the openings. Thus a picture film 12, as shown in Fig. 2, may be inserted between the discs to assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
It will be understood that the disc members are opaque, but the spaced members may accommodate any translucent media for registry with the openings, such as glass, viscoloid, celluloid, acetate, mica, cellophane, et cetera, which may be of clear color, combination of colors, or with any figure or design inscribed or imprinted thereon. The successive openings are preferably numbered in numerical order, as shown, for convenient listing and reference to the different insertions, and after the pictures or other media have been assembled in the manner described, the discs are further secured together by a plurality of peripheral fastening elements 13, which may consist of rivets or the like. These rivets or other permanent fastenings are secured adjacent the outer circumference of the discs with one fastening element forieach opening 10- .cated in radial alinement through the opening in such manner that the insertion cannot be withdrawn or replaced.
By reason of the fact that the holders of the present invention are extremely economical to manufacture, much more efficient and satisfactory service to the users of projection machines will be made by the replacement of the entire holder periodically, rather than providing a permanent holder and allowing the user to make the necessary insertions and substitutions. In other words, the pictures or the like are preferably per manently mounted in the-holder, which insures the party rendering the service that no alteration or substitution will be made, and the user is relieved of the trouble of making substitutions in a permanent holder. \Vhen the parts are riveted together, as in the preferred form, the pictures or the like are held in place by contact with the adjacent discs which are firmly pressed together without the necessity of additional positioning means.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope'of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An interchangeable holding member for projection machines, comprising a main circular light weight disc member composed ofaluminum or equivalent light weight material, a supplementary disc member of similar material overlapping said main discmember and having its inner edge spaced from the center of said main disc member, registering openings in both said main disc member and said supplementary disc member, a picture film inserted between said disc members, and permanent fastening elements securing said disc members together adjacent said openings to prevent removal of said picture film.
2. An interchangeable holding member ments securing said disc members together adjacent said openings to prevent removal of said picture films.
3. An interchangeable holding member for projection machines, comprising a main circular light weight disc member composed of aluminum or equivalent light weight material, a supplementary disc member of similar material overlapping said main disc member and having its inner edge spaced from the center of said main disc member, registering openings in both said main disc member and said supplementary disc memher, a picture film inserted between said disc members,, and permanent fastening elements securing said disc members together adjacent said openings to prevent removal of said picture film, said holding member provided with a central opening for attachment to the shaft of a projection machine and also provided with an offset opening for receiving a rotating member of a projection machine.
4. An interchangeable holding member for projection machines, comprising a main circular light weight disc member composed of aluminum or equivalent light weight material, a supplementary disc member of similar material overlapping said main disc member and provided with a large central opening to provide a circumferential overlapping portion, said members provided with a plurality of spaced circumferential openings throughout said circumferential portion for the reception of picture films for projection purposes, picture films inserted between said members in registry with said openings, and permanent fastening elements securing said disc members together adjacent said openings to prevent removal of said picture films, said holding member provided with a central opening for attachment to the shaft of a projection machine and also provided with an ofiset opening for receiving a rotating member of a projection machine.
