GARMENT SAFETY POCKET Application led January 17, 1931. Serial No. 509,318.

The object of my invention is the production of a device to be attached to, or made a part of wearing apparel using pockets, and

so constructed as to prevent access to the pockets contents without the full knowledge of the wearer, preventing pocket picking or loss of pochets contents should the garment be inverted.

The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is a longitudinal sectional view through a portion of a garment at the pocket thereof, showing the pocket equipped with an embodiment of the invention.

Fig. 2 is a plan and somewhat schematic view of certain of the pocket elements iIlcluding the liap and the wire cloth within its protecting sheath, part of the latter being cut and lifted to expose the wire cloth.

Referring to the drawing, I have shown at E the exterior fabric of a garment, the latter being cut at a to form a pocket opening. Back of opening t is the pocket member per se it comprising a fabric bag-like member F stitched at G to member E above pocket opening a and at its base stitched to member E, as at I-I.

The pocket may be provided withan exteriIor flap if desired, such a flap being shown at Stitched to the garment member E im-l mediately below the pocket opening a is a tongue or iap made of strong cloth, usually the same material used in the garment to which it is attached. It preferably occupies the entire width of the pocket extending downward therein, being somewhat longer than the depth of the pocket to enable surrounding the contents of the latter.

To remove any part of the pockets contents, the tongue or Hap A must rst be removed by drawing` the same upwardly and out of the pocket, its edge being attached inside the garment immediately adjacent to the opening of the pocket will allow the tongue or flap to hang outside so that complete access to the pocket may be accomplished.

C represents a piece of cloth into which has been woven strands of line wire. A sheet of this wired cloth, preferably sewn between two layers of fabric B and D is attached to the garment member E and extends downward substantially the full length and width of the pocket, being utilized to prevent the cutting into the pocket from without.

My safety pocket is so arranged that it may be installed in clothing already made or incorporated at the time of manufacture.

It will be understood that various alterations in and modifications of the embodiment illustrated in the drawing may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim and desire to ysecure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

In combination with a garment having a pocket opening and a pocket member connecting with said opening, of a sheet-like flexible guard member secured to the inner wall of the garment below the pocket opening, and a tongue member of greater length thanthe depth of the pocket and substantially the` width of the pocket, the tongue member being secured to the garment immediately below the pocket opening and adapted by its said length to extend under the contents of the pocket, said tongue member being adapted for withdrawal to permit access to the contents of the pocket.v
