This invention relates toan adding machine.
An object of the invention is to provide. an adding machine of the character described which may be easily'operated and wherebythe total of added amounts Vmay be readily ascertained. Another object'of the invention is to provide an adding machine voi such construction that it maybe-made of lightmaterial, maybe easily operated and may be made of varioussizeslsuitable for use'for keeping scores of games, andthe like, as well as for the addition of numbers generally, y y 1 i.
With the above and other objects in view this invention has particular relation to certainv novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of'which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:-

Referring now more particularly to the draw-l ing wherein like numerals of reference designate the same parts in each of the gures lthe numeral I designates a box-like casing wherein the operating mechanism may be installed. The .numeral 2 designates a removable cover kfor said casing. It' is to be understood that the casing anclcover may be made of any suitable material,
and may be of any approved design.
The operating mechanism comprises a plurality of approximately similar units. Thesen are the spring pawls I3 whose free ends are engageable with the -teeth of the respective discs,

, Secured to the undersides of thecounter discs are thek gears 32, 33, 34, 35 and 36 respectively having half the number of gear teeth as that of the corresponding discs I3 to I1 respectively, that is, each Vgear 32 to 36 inclusive has ten gear teeth which are in mesh with the gear teeth I8v of the `corresponding discs I3 to I1 inclusive so that as one of the discs I3 to I1 is rotated the corresponding gears 32 to 36 inclusive will also be rotated to carry the numerals on the'rotated counter disc successively in front of.k the correslots 31 to 4I,v inclusive, aligned above the teeth These slots are of suilicient length to expose one half ofthe teeth of these discs. Any one of the series of discs I3 to I1 may be rotated by insert- 3 ing a pencil or othersuitable implement through the corresponding Aslot in engagement with one of the teeth I8. As shown said discs should be rotated to the right. The spaces between the teeth I3 are indicated on the top 2 by the numerals V1 to 9 inclusive and the gearing is such that when the rotatingimplement is inserted opposite any particular number and the corresponding disc turned to the right as far as y,the corresponding slot will permit, the-corresponding numeral onk the corresponding counter disc l will be brought opposite the corresponding yopening of the series of openings 21 to 3|. rThe discs 22, 23, 24 and 25 have the projecting teeth 42,43, 44, and 45, respectively arranged toengage the teeth I8 of the discs I4, I5, I6 and I1.
rotation of the disc 22 the tooth 42 thereof will engage a tooth I8 of the disc I4 causing said disc i4 to turn one-twentieth of a complete rotation, which in turn causes the counter disc 23 to turn one tenth of a rotation, and so on.
Accordingly, a pencil or other operating implement may be inserted in either of the slots 31 to 4| and the corresponding disc given successive partial rotations depending upon the numbers to be added. If the sum of said numbers is less than ten, the total will be shown by the corresponding opening of the series of openings 21 to 3l, but if the sum of the numbers to be added exceeds 9 the succeeding discs to the left will be intermittently rotated as hereinabove explained so that the sum of the numbers will be shown through the corresponding openings:-
To illustrate, if it be desired to add l, 3 and 5, a pencil may be inserted in slot 31 opposite 1, and the disc rotated as far as the slot will permit, and then the pencil, or other implement, may be inserted in said slot 31 opposite 3 and the disc rotated again as far as said slot will permit and the pencil then inserted through the slot opposite 5 and the disc turned, as before, and thereupon the numeral 9 of the counter disc 22 will appear through the opening 2l. If the sum of the numbers to be thus totaled equals, or exceeds, ten, the disc 22 Will perform more than a complete rotation and the disc I4 will be partly rotated so as to carry the proper number on the counter disc 23 opposite .the opening 28 and the unit and tens numbers Will thus be rendered visible through the openings 21 and 28; and the operation may be continued as far as desired Within the capacity of the machine. The machine shown will show totals of five figures but it is obvious that a machine of greater or less capacity may be constructed utilizing the same principle.
The drawing and description disclose what is now considered to be a preferred form of the invention by Way of illustration only, While the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claim.
What We claim is:-
A machine for registering totals comprising a casing having openings therein, separate independent units in the casing forming a series of rotatable transmitting members exposed for manual operation, and a series of rotatable number carriers each carrier being associated with and geared to each transmitting member, the corresponding carrier having a series of numeralsr thereon arranged to be successively exposed through the corresponding openings, as the carriers are rotated, means operative, upon a complete rotation of a carrier, to impart a partial rotation to the next succeeding transmitting member, said casing having series of numerals thereon, corresponding to and arranged in the same sequence as the numerals on the corresponding carriers, said casing numeral being arranged to indicate the required amount of rotation of a transmitting member `to produce a selected numeral opposite the corresponding opening overlapping plates in the casing, an extension on each plate, except one, the extension of each plate overlying the transmitting member of an adjacent plate and pintles through the extensions andthrough the corresponding transmitting members and plates and forming means on which the transmitting members rotate.
