19 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewing machines especially adapted for performing simultaneously both seaming and pinking operations, and particularly embodies certain improvements on the construction disclosed in the Mann Patent 1,962,022, issued June 5, 1934, for Improvement in combined seaming and pinking machines.
Among the several objects of my. invention are to provide a simple and novel means for alternately reciprocating the movable knives; to provide a pinking mechanism which can be readily attached to any sewing machine, and to provide means for imparting frictional contact between the ledger blades and the movable knives without creating unnecessary pressure between the depending portions of the knives and the ledger blades. 1
With these and other objects in view which will more fully appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by following the description, the appended claims, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings, I have illustrated a conventional sewing machine which includes a work supporting base 5, a standard 6, and a hollow overhanging arm I wherein is journaled a main rotary shaft 8. A vertically reciprocatory needle bar 9 is mounted in the end of the overhanging 55 arm I and carries a needle Hi, the needle bar being given one complete reciprocation by the main shaft during every rotation or cycle thereof. Also supported on the end of the arm I is a presser foot II. The usual intermittent teed dog I2 is mounted in the base I for cooperation with the 5 foot to feed the material up to and past the needle.
A base plate I! is slotted as at It to receive clamp screws I5 by which it is removably and adjustably attached to the work supporting base 5, as shown in Figure 3. Formed in the base 5 at the right of the needle, is an opening it and formed in the base plate I! is an opening ll which registers with the opening It. The openings receive the pinking knives and also provide clearance therefor.
The pinking or trimming elements comprise two stationary or ledger blades l8, l8 and two cooperating vertically movable knives l9, It. The ledger blades II are attachedto the base plate I3 at opposite sides of the opening H, the blades being arranged at an angle to each other and the cutting edges 20, 20 thereof forming two sides of a triangular opening, the apex thereof being located just to the rightof the 25 needle. Each knife includes a cutting edge 2| and a portion or toe 22 which depends below the cutting edge. These knives I9, I! are mounted in the ends of knife arms 13, 23 which are fulcrumed to swing about horizontal axes arranged at substantially right angles to the cutting edges 20 of the ledger blades ii. To this end, each knife arm is fixed to a pivot shaft 24 which is mounted for longitudinal movements in spaced inner and outer bearing bushings 25, 26 mounted in the base plate II. The longitudinal axis of each arm is disposed at a slight obtuse angle to the cutting edge of the associated ledger blade in order to obtain a shear cut. The inner end of each pivot shaft 24 is reduced to form a resultant annular shoulder 21 and disposed around this reduced end is a coil spring 28. The inner end of the bushing 25 is interiorly threaded for engagement by an adjusting nut 29, the inner end of the pivot shaft being slidable therein and relatively thereto. Thus by means of the nut 29, the tension of the spring 28 may be varied to thereby vary the pressure of the associated knife is against the cooperating ledger blade l8. s In the form illustrated in Figures 1 to 4, the knives I! are alternately reciprocated in timed relation to the needle reciprocations from the rotary shaft 8 by the following simple and iii-- rect means:-
Attached rigidly to the shaft 8 between the needle I and the standard 5 is a relatively small spur gear 30, and the overhanging arm 1 is cut away on its under side as at 3| to form an opening which registers with said gear. Attached to the under side of the overhanging arm 1 are bearing brackets 32, 32 and journaled therein are spaced countershafts 33, 33 which extend in parallelism with the rotary shaft 3 and are disposed on opposite sides therefrom. Two relatively large spur gears 34, '34 of equal diameters are fixed to the countershafts and are in constant mesh with the relatively small spur gear 30. Preferably the gear ratio is I to 2 whereby the countershafts will be rotated once to every two rotations of the main shaft 3. Secured to the ends of the countershafts at points above the knife arms 23, 23 areball eccentries 35, 35 which are timed 180 apart. centnics 35 and at their lower ends to the balls 31. is substantially equal to the distance between the balls 31, 31 and consequently the links 33. 38, as viewed in Figure 2, are disposed in substantially' parallel vertical relation whereby a direct thrust from the eccentrics to the balls will be imparted.
In the form illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, I have journaled a transverse shaft 39 in a bracket 40 which is attached to the under face of the overhanging arm 1. This countershaft is rotated through the medium of a 1 to 2 reduction gear unit comprising a worm 41. fixed to the main shaft 3 which is in constant mesh with a worm wheel 42 fixed to the countershaft, the count'ershaft and the wheel being located in a clearance opening 43 formed in the overhanging arm. Fixed to the ends of the countershaft are two eccentrics 44, 44 which are equally spaced on opposite sides of the main shaft 3. The eccentrics are connected to the balls 31 on the knife arms 23 by the links 38, 38 and the dis-.
tance between the eccentrics 44, 44 is the same as the distance between the balls 31, 31. Thus,
as viewed in Fig. 9, the links are disposed in substantial parallel vertical relation, as in the form previously described.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that the knives I! are alternately reciprocated from the main shaft 3 through driving connections which include at least one countershaft, a reduction gear coupling said shafts, and two driven eccentrics which are directly connected to the knife arms 23 by links 33; that-the knife driving means is so timed that the knives are alternately reciprocated in timed relation to the needle reciprocations; and that the pinking attachment may be readily applied to conventional sewing machines with but very little expense in preparing the machine to receive the attachment.
It will be noted that the depending portion or toe 22 of each knife I Q'is narrow and therefore has but little surface contact with the edge of the associated ledger blade l3, and practice has demonstrated that after a comparatively short time the heavy pressure of this toe against the edge of the ledger blade resulted in the knife having a tendency to gall and to squeak. I have overcome this objection by absorbing some of the spring pressure by the following means:--
Attached to the outer face of each knife arm 23 at apoint intermediate the knife I! and The distance between the eccentrics 35, '35
the pivot shaft 24, is a hardened metal bearing plate 45. An adjusting screw 46 is threadably engaged inan opening formed in the base plate l3 and the inner end of this screw is provided with a rounded inner end 41 which registers with the bearing plate 45. A floating washer or plate 43 is provided with a flat inner face 43 and with a conical recess 50 in its outer face for receiving the rounded end 41 of the screw to thereby support the washer 48 against the plate 45. By adjusting the screw 46 more or less bearing pressure between the washer 48 and the plate 45 may be obtained and thereby absorb a part of thepressure exerted by the coil spring 28. A set screw 5| is supported in the base plate l3 for cooperation with a peripheral recess 52 to retain the adJusting screw in an adjusted position.
It is of course to be understood that the details of structure and arrangement of parts may be -variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:-
1. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knives supported on the base for vertical reciprocations and for cooperation with the ledger blades, and driving connections between the knives and the rotary shaft for alternately reciprocating said knives comprising a reduction gear unit including a driving gear fixed on the rotary shaft between the standard and the free end of said overhanging arm, and separate driv ing connections between the knives and the reduction gear unit including two driven eccentrics timed 180 apart and mounted on said overhanging arm, and links connecting the eccentrics and the knives.
2. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft Journaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections ,with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knives supported on the base for vertical reciprocations and for cooperation with the ledger blades, and driving connections between the knives and the rotary shaft for alternately reciprocating said knives comprising a reduction gear unit including a driving gear fixed on the rotary shaft between the standard and the free end of said overhanging arm, and separate driving connections between the knives and the re.
duction gear unit including two driven eccentrics timed 180 apart and mounted on said overhanging arm, and links connecting the eccentrics and the knives, the distance between the eccentrics being substantially equal to the distance between the points of connections between the links and the arms whereby substantially vertic u ts will be imparted to the knife arms by the eccentrics. 3
3. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a. rotary shaftjqurnaled in said am, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm,and having. driving connections with saidshaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knives supported on the base for vertical reciprocations and for cooperation with the ledger chine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm, a verticallyv reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in afabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knife arms fulcrumed on the base on horizontal axes arranged atsubstantially right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives respectively secured to,the arms for cooperation with the ledger blades, and driving connections between the knife arms and the. rotary shaft for alternately reciprocating said knives comprising a reduction gear unit including a driving gear fixed on the rotary shaft between the standard and the free end of said overhanging arm, and separate driving connections between the knife arms and the reduction gear unit including two driven eccentrics timed apart and mounted on said overhanging arm, and links directly 'connecting the eccentrics and the knife arms.
5. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft joumaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knife arms fulcrumed on the base on horizontal axes arranged at substantially right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives respectively secured to the arms for cooperation with the ledger blades, said knife arms being each movable longitudinally alongv its fulcrum, spring means cooperating with each arm for urging and maintaining the knife in yieldable contact with the associated ledger blade, and driving connections between the knife arms and the rotary shaft for alternately reciprocating said knives comprising a reduction gear unit including a driving gear fixed on the rotary shaft between the standard and the free end of said overhang ing arm, and separate driving connections between the knife arms and the. reduction gear unit including two driven eccentrics timed 180 apart and mounted on said overhanging arm, and links directly connecting the eccentrics and the knife arms.
6, In a combined and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including abase, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at theend of said am and having driving connections with said shaft, and means for cutting'pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knife arms fulcrumed on the base on horizontal axes arranged at substantially right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives respectively secured to the arms for cooperation with the ledger blades, said knife arms being each movable longitudinally along its fulcrum, spring means cooperating with each arm for urging and maintaining the knife in yieldable contact with the associated ledger blade, means mounted on the base for cooperation with, each knife arm to limit the spring thrust of the associated knife against the ledger blade, and driving connections between the knife arms and the rotary shaft for alternately reciprocating said knives comprising a reductiongear unit including a driving gear fixed on the rotary shaft between the standard and the free end of said overhanging arm, and separate driving connections between the knife arms and the reduction gear unit including two driven eccentrics timed 180 apart and mounted on said overhanging arm, and links directly connecting the eccentrics and the knife arms.
. 7. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm. a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with said shaft,
and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted onthe base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knife arms fulcrumed on the base on horizontal axes arranged at substantially right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives respectively secured to the arms for cooperation with the ledger blades, said knife arms being each movable longitudinally along its fulcrum, each knife including a portion depending below the actual cutting edge thereof, spring means cooperating,
with each arm for urging and maintaining the depending portion of the knife in yieldable con-. tact with the associated ledger blade when the knife is in non-cutting position, means mounted on the base for cooperation with each knife arm to limit the spring thrust of the associated knife against the ledger blade, and driving connections between the knife arms and the rotary shaft for alternately reciprocating said knives comprising a reduction gear unit including a driving gear fixed on the rotary shaft between the standard and the free end of said overhanging arm, and separate driving connections between the knife arms and the reduction gear unit including two 75 driven eccentrics timed 180 apart and mounted on said overhanging arm, and links directly connecting the eccentrics and the knife arms.
8. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame includinga base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journale'd in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the-side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knife arms. fulcrumed'on the base on horizontal axes arranged at substantially right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives respectively secured to the arms for cooperation with the ledger blades, said knife arms being each movable longitudinally along its fulcrum, each knife including a portion depending below the actual-cutting edge thereof, spring means cooperating with each arm for urging and maintaining the depending portion of the knife in yieldable contact with the associated ledger blade when the knife is in non-cutting position, said arms being provided on their sides opposite said spring means with vertical fiat bearing surfaces, means mounted on the base for cooperation with each knife arm to limit the spring thrust of the associated knife against the ledger blade, said limiting means comprising an ad- J'ustable screw mounted on the base on the side of the arm opposite said spring means, and a bearing plate supported on said screw for sliding contact with the flat bearing surface of the associated arm, and driving connections between the knife arms and the rotary shaft for alternately reciprocating said knives comprising a re-' duction gear unit including a driving gearflxed on the rotary shaft between the standard and the free end of said overhanging arm, and separate driving connections between the knife arms and the reduction gear unit including two driven eccentrics timed 180 apart and mounted on said overhanging arm, and links directly connecting the eccentrics and the knife arms.
9. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades-mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard'and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knife arms fulcrumed on the base on horizontal axes arranged at substantially right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives respectively secured to the arms for cooperation with the ledger blades, said knife arms being each movable longitudinally along its fulcrum, each knife including a. portion depending below the actual cutting edge thereof, spring means cooperating with each arm for urging and maintaining the depending portion of the knife in yieldable'contact with the associated ledger blade when the knife is in non-cutting position, said arms being provided on their sides opposite said spring means with vertical flat bearing surfaces, means mounted on the base for cooperation with each knife arm to limit the spring thrust of the associated knife against the ledger blade, said limiting means comprising an adjustable screw mounted on the base on the side of the arm opposite said spring means, said screw having a rounded inner end, and a bearing plate formed with a socket for freely receiving the rounded end of the screw to thereby support said bearing plate in sliding contact with the flat bearing surface of the associated arm, and driving connections between the knife arms and the rotary shaft for alternately reciprocating said knives comprising a reduction gear unit including a driving gear fixed on the rotary shaft between the standard and the free end of said overhanging arm, and separate driving connections between the knife arms and the reduction gear unit including twodriven eccentrics timed 180 apart and mounted on said overhanging arm, and links directly connecting the eccentrics and the knife arms.
10. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knife arms fulcrumed on the base on horizontal axes arranged at right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives respectively secured to the arms for cooperation with the ledger blades, a transverse driven shaft supported on the overhanging arm below the rotary shaft, a reduction worm gear unit coupling said shafts, two'spaced eccentrics fixed to the transverse shaft and timed 180 apart, and links directly connecting the eccentrics and the arms.
11. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections'with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knife arms fulcrumed on the base on horizontal axes arranged at right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives respectively secured to the arms for cooperation with the ledger blades, a transverse driven shaft supported on the overhanging arm below the rotary shaft, a reduction worm gear unit coupling said shafts, two spaced eccentrics fixed to the transverse shaft and timed 180 apart, and links directly connecting the eccentrics and the arms, the distance between the eccentrics being substantially equal to the distance between the points of connections between the links and the arms whereby substantially vertical thrusts are imparted to the knife arms by the eccentrics.
12. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with sald shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knife arms fulcrumed on the base on horizontal axes arranged at right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives respectively secured to the arms for cooperation with the ledger blades, means for maintaining each blade and associated knife in yieldable contact with each other, a transverse driven shaft supported on the overhanging arm below the rotary shaft, a reduction worm gear unit coupling said shafts, two spaced eccentrics fixed to the transverse shaft and timed 180 apart, and links directly connecting the eccentrics and the arms.
13. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a pair of knife arms fulcrumed on the base on horizontal axes arranged at right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives respectively secured to the arms for cooperation with the ledger blades, said arms being each movable longitudinally. along its fulcrum, spring means cooperating with each arm for urging and maintaining the knife in yieldable contact with the associated ledger blade, a transverse driven shaft supported on the overhanging arm below the rotary shaft, a reduction worm gear unit coupling said shafts, two spaced eccentrics fixed to the transverse shaft and timed 180 apart, and links directly connecting the eccentries and the arms.
14. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standard and arranged at an angle to each other, a
pair of knives'supported on the basefor vertical reciprocations and for cooperation with the ledger blades, and driving connections between the knives and the rotary shaft comprising two countershafts supported on the overhanging arm and extending in parallelism with the rotary shaft, a reduction gear unit coupling the three shafts, and driving connections between the countershafts and the knives for alternately reciprocating the latter including eccentrics respectively fixed on the countershafts and timed 180 apart and two links directly connecting the eccentrics and the knives.
15. In a combinedseaming and pinking machine, the combination with a frame including a base, a standard, and an overhanging arm, of a rotary shaft journaled in said arm, a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted at the end of said arm and having driving connections with said shaft, and means for cutting pinks in a fabric in timed relation to the needle reciprocations including a pair of ledger blades mounted on the base at the side of the needle towards the standshafts, and driving connections between the countershafts and the knives for alternately reciprocating the latter including eccentric respectively fixed on the countershafts and timed 180 apart and two links directly connecting the eccentrics and the knives, said countershafts being respectively disposed on opposite sides of the rotary shaft, the distance between the eccentrics being substantially equal to the distance betweenthe points of connections between the links and the arms whereby substantially vertical thrusts will be imparted .to the knife arms by the eccentrics. 16. The combination of a sewing machine including a work-supporting base, a standard, an
overhanging arm, a rotary shaft Journaled in said overhanging arm, and a vertically reciprocatory needle mounted in the end of the overhanging arm and having driving connections with the rotary shaft; and a pinking attachment comprising a relatively small driving gear attached to the rotary shaft between the needle and the standard, a base plate mounted on the worksupporting base below the overhanging arm and provided with a triangular opening adjacent the needle. two ledger blades attached to the base plate along two sides of said opening, a pair. of knife arms fulcrumed on the base plate on axes disposed at substantially right angles to the cutting edges of the ledger blades, knives secured to the arms for cooperation with the blades, and
means for alternately reciprocating said knives in timed relation to the needle including a pair of eccentrics rotatably supported on the overhanging arm, reduction gear connections between the eccentrics and the gear on the rotary shaft, and
links directly connecting the eccentrics and the,
and the rotary shaft comprising two operative relation to the needle, a knife arm fulcrumed on the base on a horizontal axis arranged at right angles to the cutting edge of the ledger blade, said knife arm being movable along its fulcrum, said knife including a portion depending below the actual cutting edge thereof, spring means cooperating with the arm for urging and maintaining the depending portion of the knife in yieldable contact with the associated ledger blade when the knife is in non-cutting position, said arm being provided on its side opposite said spring means with a vertical flat bearing surface, means mounted on the base for cooperation with the knife arm to limit the spring thrust of the knife against the ledger blade, said limiting means comprising an adjustable screw mounted on the base on the side of the arm opposite said spring means, and a bearing plate supported on said screw for sliding contact with the flat bearing surface of the knife arm. 18.
