An object or the invention is to provide closure means which efl'ectively conceals the interior of a burner compartment but which may be readily opened to provide access to the compartment without removing the handles of the burner valves and of other instruments. Another object is to provide readily removable means for locking the closure in shut position. A further object is to provide a hinged door ior closing the burner compartment, the door itself being readily removable not only from its shielding position but also from its connections with the range frame. Other specific objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds.
- The invention is illustrated, in a preferred embodiment, by the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. l is a broken front view in elevation of a portion of a range embodying myinvention, the door to the burner compartment being closed; Fig. 2, a view similar to 1, the door being in open position; Fig. 3, a. broken enlarged sectional view, the section being taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. d, an enlarged detail view of the located burner-pipesll from which oven. The pipe 13 is valve stem for the oven burner; and Fig. 5, a sectional view oi the removable handle for the valve stem shown in Fig. 4.
In the illustration given, A designates a gas range afiording a gas burner compartment h; and h designates ahinged door adapted to close the compartment A.
The range A may be of any suitable constructlon. Because oi the well known construction of the type or range illustrated, it is believed unnecessary to set forth the construction in detail. Within the burner compartment A is supported a gas manifold is and above the manifold are extend outwardlythe burner handles 12. The burner handles 12 are employed to control the gas fed to the burners (not shown) directly above the compartment A. the gas pipe 12 leading to the burner within the provided with a valve stem it having a forward portion cut away at 15, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4. The handle 16, as shown more clearly in Fig. 5, is provided with a recess 17 in which is secured ametal lining 18 adapted to receive the cut-away end oithe stem l4. Preferably, the handle 16 is formed of a composition product, such as for example a phenolic condensation product known as bake- 5 lite, and the recess therein is designed to form a tight fit with the end 01 valve stem 14. The springplunger 18 serves to rcleasably lock the handle on stem it.
Below the handle 16, is located a heat regulator 19 for the oven and the heat regulator handle or knob 20 extends forwardly from the instrument l2.
The closure B may also be of any suitable construction. We prefer, however, to form the 010- sure plate or ,dooras illustrated more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 the border portions of the plate being turned inwardly to form flanges 21. In the illustration given, the door 18 is pivotally connected at one end to the range irame. Secured to the range frame are a pair of spaced angle irons 22 and 23. Secured to the upper member 22 is a relatively long pin 24 and to the lower member 23, a relatively short pin 25 (see Fig. 3). The top and bottom flanges 21 are perforated at 26 25 to receive the pins 24 and 25. With the construction illustrated, the door B may be removed by raising the door until the short pin 25 is clear and then lowering the door so as to allow the pin 2d to clear-the recess 26 of the top flange 21. In assembling the door, the steps are reversed. Asshown more clearly in Figs. 1 and 2, the door B is provided near its top with a longitudinal slot 27 adapted to receive the handles 12. Also, the door is provided near its bottom with a circular opening 22 adapted to receive the handle or knob at of the heat-regulator. Between the openings 27 and 22, is a relatively small opening 29 adapted to receive the hub portion 30 of the oven-burner handle is.
In the operation of the device, when it is de sired to open the door B, the oven-burner handle 16 may be drawn forward with suflicient force to release its grip upon the valve stem l l. With the handle 16 removed, the door B may be swung to the position illustrated in Fig. 2, the slot or longitudinal opening 27 permitting the door to pass by handles 12, and the opening 28 permitting the door to pass by the handle or knob 20. The burner'compartment is now open for cleaning or for v repair of the parts. If it is desired to remove the door 18 from its hinges, the door may be simply raised to clear the pivot pin 25 and then dropped to clear the pivot pin 24. In the assembly of the apparatus, the door may be readily placed in position by first passing the pin 24 through the opening 26 in the top flange 21, and then dropping the door so that the opening 26 in the lower flange 21 receives the short pin 25. In the removal or in the assembly of the door B, the longitudinal opening 27 affords a handle by which the operation can be readily carried out.
When the door B is moved to closed position, past the handles 12 and 20, the door may be locked in this position by pressing the handle 16 upon the valve stem 14.
While, in the illustration given, we have shown particular forms of handles and correspondinglyshaped openings in the door B, it will be understood that the character and shapes of the handles and also of the openings in the door B may be modified greatly without departing from our invention. The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
We claim:
1. In combination with a range having a burner compartment and instrument handles extending therefrom, a valve stem equipped with a removable handle also extending therefrom, and a door hingedly connected to the range and having an opening through which said first mentioned handles extend to a point beyond the door as the door is closed and having also a small opening adapted to receive the valve stem therethrough when the same is not equipped with the removable handle.
2. In combination with a range having a burner compartment and a plurality of burner handles extending therefrom, a valve stem also extending therefrom and having a portion of its end cut away, a handle provided with a recess adapted to form a sliding fit with the end of said opening adapted to receive said first mentioned handles and having also an opening adapted to receive said valve stem when its handle has been I one of said valve stems, valve handles secured to the stems extending through said first-mentioned opening and adapted to be received therethrough when the panel is removed, and a removable handie releasably engaging the end of said valve stem extending through said last-mentioned opening and adapted to releasably lock said panel in closed position. I
4. In combination with a range having a burner compartment and a plurality of valve stems extending therefrom, a removable burner panel substantially flush with the front wall of said range and closing said burner compartment, said panel being provided with anopening through which said valve stems extend, handles secured to the ends of said valve stems and adapted to engage the front of said panel to prevent its removal when said handles are turned in one direction but adapted to be received through said opening to permit the removal of the panel when the handlesare turned in another direction.
5. In combination with a range having a burner compartment and a plurality of burner valve stems extending therefrom, a removable panel closing the front of 4 said burner compartment and arranged substantially flush with the front wall of said range, said panel being provided with an opening through which said valve stems extend, valve handles secured to the ends of said stems and receivable through said opening only when the handles are turned in one direction.
