Description
Patented Mar. 12, 1935 PATENT OFFICE PROCESS OF PRODUCING NITROGEN BASE FOR USE AS ANTIKNOCK COMPOUND Gustav Egloff 111., assignors to pany, Chicago, 111., Dakota No Drawing. Application January 14, 1928,

2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in the process of producing anti-knock compounds and is more particularly directed to the production of such compounds resulting from the treatment of aromatic hydrocarbons as, for example, benzene and toluene in the manner hereinafter described. It is, of course, well known to those skilled in the art that motor fuels having substantial antiknock properties are desirable for use in high compression internal combustion engines. Ordinary gasoline produced from the refining of petroleum in most cases lacks such anti-knock properties.
By means of knock motor fuel produced therefrom can be blended with gasoline to produce a motor fuel of the character desired.
To this end, we take aromatic hydrocarbons and subject them to cracking conditions in the presence of ammonia, for example, we may take aromatic hydrocarbons and pass them together with ammonia gas through a suitable heating coil mounted in a furnace and the mixture sub jected to a temperature of say 1000 F. or more and under a pressure of say 300 pounds per square inch, more or less. The coil used may, for example, be several hundred feet in length and say 4 inches diameter, it being understood that the figures given are merely illustrative. If desired, a
the present invention, the anti- (o1. zen-130.5)
catalyst, such as activated carbon, may also be used to facilitate the speed of reaction.
The process may be carried out at atmospheric pressure or it may be carried out at a vacuum, also the invention is preferably, in most cases at least, carried out under pressure substantially above atmospheric.
By treating the aromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of ammonia, as above stated, we produce anti-knock compounds as, for example, aniline or 10 paratoluidine from benzene and toluene respectively.
We claim as our invention:
1. A process of producing nitrogen bases for blending with gasoline motor fuel, which consists in subjecting aromatic hydrocarbons of the benzene series to a temperature of the order of .1000 F. under a superatmospheric pressure of the order of 300 pounds per 20 square inch in the presence of ammonia gas.
2. A process ofproducing nitrogen bases for blending with gasoline to produce an anti-knock motor fuel, which consists in subjecting aromatic hydrocarbons of the benzene series to a temperature of the order of 1000 F. in the presence of ammonia gas and activated carbon.
